Madison River - Lower - February 6th, 2004

Flows on the lower are 1120 C.F.S. below the powerhouse and they have 109 C.F.S. come out of the gates at the dam. The river just below the dam has been a hot spot over the past couple of weeks, however the river below the Bear Trap Canyon wilderness area has started to fish very well. Below the dam nymphs have been the mainstay with small midge larvae, egg patterns, and rubberleg stone fly patterns. There have been a few fish feeding on midges below the dam, but if you want a better shot at rising fish stay below the Canyon. We had some great dry fly fishing below the Bear Trap during mid week when the skies were overcast and there were some slight snow flurries. Cloudy days with little to no wind are producing some good mid winter dry fly activity. The fish that are up on the midges are not the largest fish in the river, but it is a great break from looking at a strike indicator. Nymphing will produce some larger fish and egg patterns seem to be the way to go on the lower right now. Weather will be the biggest factor over the next several months on the lower river, if the skies are cloudy and the wind is calm head out to the river.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 827 C.F.S. If you are willing to make the 90 mile drive you should do it. The fishing near Raynold's Pass has been excellent over the past ten days. Nymphing has been very productive with egg patterns and small nymphs. There has also been some fairly consistent midge hatches and if the wind is calm you should run into a few fish feeding on the surface. Various colored egg patterns have really been producing well and you will have some luck on pheasant tails and copper johns if you stick with them. If you have an egg on in combination with your small nymphs you will get most of your fish on the eggs. The upper has been some great fishing as of late, get out and enjoy it because the river closes to fishing at the end of Febuary.

Fishing Conditions & Comments: The stretch from Quake Lake to McAtee Bridge and Ennis to Ennis Lake will close from the end of Feb. to the third Saturday in May for the normal season.

Nymphs: BH Pheasant Tails 16-18, 16-18 Copper Johns in black, copper and red, Zebra Midges #16-20 in Black, Red and Burgundy, Small Stones like #10-12 Double Bead Stone, or #8-12 Kaufman's mini stone. Streamers: Brown Wooly Buggers 4-8, Bow River Buggers in black and brown 4-6, Pearl and Copper Zonkers 4-6, Clouser's Crayfish 6-8 and Baby Crayfish 8.
Fishing Conditions & Comments
The Lower has been fishing very consistantly as of late when the wind cooperates. When that air temp gets up around forty degrees, get out there!!

Flows on the lower are 1140 C.F.S. The best reports have been from just below the Ennis dam. There is some slush ice in the river on the colder days but most days the river has been in pretty good shape. Most of the fisherman have been up below the dam where they only have 2 gates open and the river is small. The fish are concentrated in the deeper slower pools. Egg patterns and anything red have been the killer combination below the dam. There have been quite a few people fishing in this area so if you venture out expect to see some other people fishing. I have also had two very reliable reports from anglers fishing in the lake just above the dam and they have had some very good luck in the past week. Fish a sink tip line and a natural or white zonker with a very slow retrieve. Most people skip over the lake just above the dam and head for the moving water in the river. If you get a chanve give the lake a try, you may be pleasantly surprised with what you catch. As for the river in the canyon and the area around warm springs we have has very few reports. Sean and Chris did fish at cobblestone the other day and they had marginal fishing to say the least. If you do not want to take the drive I would suggest taking some time to hike into the canyon and find some of the deeper holes.

Flows on the lower are 1130 C.F.S. Not much fishing on the lower except for the water directly below the Ennis Dam and Powerhouse. The past several days we our high temperatures have been around minus 15 degrees and much of the river jammed with ice. It will take a couple of weeks of mild weather to open the river back up for fishing. The area just below the dam is open and would be one of the few options for fishing in much of Southwestern Montana right now. This weekends weather forecast is looking much better with high temps approaching 40 degrees. If you want to get out and give the fly rod a work out this would be one of the better areas close to Bozeman. With all the cold weather we have had no fishing reports comming in so bring a good selection of flies to try out. The flies listed below are generally great producers on the area below the dam.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are not readable at this time due to ice and cold weather. The Upper river has been flowing at around 700 C.F.S. for the past few months so expect flows to be close to that same mark. The cold weather has slush ice flowing down the river and it is clogged in Ennis as we speak. I have not had any reports as to where the ice jam starts so I would not recomend floating the river. I have had a couple of reports from the Slide Inn area just after Christmas and they all had great days of fishing on the area around Raynold's Pass. The Upper river is only open through Febuary and if you want some good winter time fishing this is a great spot to go.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 780 C.F.S. The fishing on the very upper reaches of the river has been very good. The browns are finishing up their spawing acitivity between Hebgen and Quake lakes. Nymphs and streamers have been producing some nice size fish from this area. There have been very few anglers on the water but the fishing has been great. In the area around Slide Inn you will want to concentrate on small nymhs, san juan worms and red midge larvae. This is one of my favorite areas to fish during the winter months. You may also see a decent midge hatch if the conditions are right. If you are going to the slide inn area check out the wind reports link at the bottom of the page. They actually have a real time camera at the Raynolds Pass monitoring site where you can see what the weather looks like. With the weather forecast the lower portions of the upper river will probably be running a little slushy by the weekends end so you will want to drive up to the upper portion of the river where the slush ice generally doesn't form.

Flows on the lower are 1260 C.F.S. The lower has been providing our best action over the past ten days. The canyon has been the hot spot with good reports comming in from the area near Bear Trap creek and the strecth just below the dam. They have had one or two gates open on the dam so the area between the dam and the power house in more like a small creek rather than the large water of the Madison. There has been very few midges hatching but keep your eyes open for fish that are feeding on the surface. You won't see many of them but it is always fun to catch a fish on the surface when the fish are generally feeding below the surface. Dead drifting nymphs has been the most productive method of fishing. Streamers are still working ok but you will want to fish the streamers on a dead drift rather than stripping them. The fish are not all that aggressive and they are not going to chase a fly very far to eat it. Keep your eyes out for washed gravel as the browns have just finished their spawing activity and there eggs are getting ready to start the maturation process. Good luck and get out and enjoy the warmer days. Soon we will de distined for the ice and the rivers will be running slushy.
