Fishing Report: The Lower Madison has been the most popular destination for most anglers in the past two weeks. The water temps are nice and cool and the fishing has been pretty solid. There have been Baetis, Psuedo Cleons and some Efron Lukons hatching along the lower with most of the dry fly activity centered on the BWO's and Psuedos. Hoppers are also taking a few fish on the surface, especially inside of the Bear Trap Canyon. Floating anglers have been doing well with crayfish patterns trailed with cdc emeregers or small bead head baetis nymphs. You will want to throw the flies onto the weed beds and slowly drag the flies off the weeds. A slow methodical swing has been more productive than a full on fast moving strip on the crayfish. If you are fishing dry flies look for rising fish and stop and hit them hard. Blind fishing a dry fly has been slow, your best dry activity will be when you find consistently rising fish.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: Jess's Tan Crayfish # 6-8, Bunny Crayfish # 4-6, Brown Bugger # 6-8, BH Baetis # 14-16, BH Hares Ear # 14-16, BH PT # 14-16, Hotwire Mayfly # 14-16.

he Upper Madison has been fishing very well and the fish are still looking for hoppers. The wind has been a factor the past couple of days but the fish have even been eating off the surface on the very windy days. Flying ants are also prevalent on the upper river right now and if the wind is not real heavy you can have some good fishing on ants. Nymph fishing has been good on the river just upstream of Ennis where you have some of the deeper holes. A goldenstone nymph with a caddis larvae has been very productive for several of our guides in the past ten days. Streamers are taking a few fish as well but the action has not been redhot.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: Red Legged Hopper # 8-10, Marshmellow Hopper # 8-10, Turk's Taranutla # 8-10, Gorilla Hopper # 8-10, Parachute Hopper # 8-10, PMX Royal # 12-14, Royal Trude # 12-14, Parahcute Ant # 14-16, FLying Ant # 14-16, Red Copper John # 14-18, Bead Head Pheasant Tail # 12-16, King Prince # 12-14, McCunes Sculpin # 2-4, White Zonker # 2-4, Tan Kiwi Muddler # 2-4.

Fishing Report: The Lower Madison has cooled into the low 60's and the fishing has been good. The highlight right now has been crayfish. The crayfish molt in the spring and again in the fall and when they do they become soft and easy to digest. The fish key into this and take advantage of the large meal. I like to relate it to eating soft shell crab versus dungeness crab. There is a lot less effort that goes into eating a soft shell crab. Dead drifting has been the most productive method over the past week, primarily due to all the bright sunny weather. The weekend forecast is calling for rain and cold so stripping the flies may be very productive with the cloud cover. There has also been some baetis activity and it could explode with rain and cloud cover. Hopper fishing has been producing some results but you will definetly hook into more fish if you head below with a crayfish trailed with a small mayfly nymph off the back. Look for the fishing to really pick up on the Lower Madison.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: Jess's Tan Crayfish # 6-8, Bunny Crayfish # 4-6, Brown Bugger # 6-8, BH Baetis # 14-16, BH Hares Ear # 14-16, BH PT # 14-16, Hotwire Mayfly # 14-16.

Fishing Report: The Upper Madison has been hot. The fish are really keyed into hoppers and flying ants along most of the Upper river. You will want to be sure and have a good supply of tan hoppers and parachute ant patterns if you are heading to the upper. Traffic has slowed slightly but with the holiday weekend it could still be a bit on the crowded side. If you are not floating the river head to the upper reaches of the river near Slide Inn and Three Dollar Bridge. There are still some good hatches in this area and you will not have to deal with floating anglers. Float fisherman should have good success on hoppers and ants from Lyons Bridge all the way down to Varney Bridge. The section between Varney and Ennis has been fair for hopper fishing and very good for nymphing. The deeper pools in this stretch of river are more condusive to nymphing than they are to a fish moving off the bottom and looking for a hopper.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: Red Legged Hopper # 8-10, Marshmellow Hopper # 8-10, Turk's Taranutla # 8-10, Gorilla Hopper # 8-10, Parachute Hopper # 8-10, PMX Royal # 12-14, Royal Trude # 12-14, Parahcute Ant # 14-16, FLying Ant # 14-16, Red Copper John # 14-18, Bead Head Pheasant Tail # 12-16, King Prince # 12-14, McCunes Sculpin # 2-4, White Zonker # 2-4, Tan Kiwi Muddler # 2-4.

Fishing Report: The Lower Madison has been running around 64 degrees in the morning with a peak in temperature at around 68 degrees by late afternoon. Today it is raining and the river should fish very well. The crayfish are starting to molt and this process makes them very soft. The fish will really key into the crayfish patterns for the next couple of weeks. There has been some hopper fishing on the river as well but with the crayfish molting the fish will really be keyed in on them and not looking for much else to eat. Weekdays will be better for fishing as the warm weather is still bringing out the tubers and recreational floaters on the weekends. Keep your eye on the temperatures as well, warm weather will spike the temps into the high 60's and low 70's which makes recovery for trout difficult.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: Jess's Tan Crayfish # 6-8, Bunny Crayfish # 4-6, Brown Bugger # 6-8, BH Baetis # 14-16, BH Hares Ear # 14-16, BH PT # 14-16, Hotwire Mayfly # 14-16.

Fishing Report: Some Great reports came in over the weekend on the Upper River. Hopper action was solid along with ants and attractors fished off the back. Nymph fishing on the stretch between Varney and Ennis was productive as well for several differnt anglers that I spoke with. Goldenstone nymphs trailed with bead head caddis larvae provided good results below the surface.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: Red Legged Hopper # 8-10, Marshmellow Hopper # 8-10, Turk's Taranutla # 8-10, Gorilla Hopper # 8-10, Parachute Hopper # 8-10, PMX Royal # 12-14, Royal Trude # 12-14, Parahcute Ant # 14-16, FLying Ant # 14-16, Red Copper John # 14-18, Bead Head Pheasant Tail # 12-16, King Prince # 12-14, McCunes Sculpin # 2-4, White Zonker # 2-4, Tan Kiwi Muddler # 2-4.

Fishing Report: The Upper Madison has been the saving grace over the past 5 days due to dirty water conditions on the Yellowstone and Gallatin. Both rivers have sinced cleared which will help with the traffic on the river. The fishing has been solid with hoppers trailed with either an ant pattern or small beadhead mayfly nymph off the back. Concentrate your efforts more in the center of the river rather than on the banks. If you want to do more wade fishing rather than floating try the section from Varney down to Ennis. The deeper holes have been producing some large fish on dead drifted sculpins, goldenstones and caddis pupae. If you are a wade fishing angler head to either Valley Garden or the section between Quake lake and Lyons Bridge. These are closed to fishing from boats and will have little to no boat traffic. If you are looking for hatches the upper wade fishing stretch has seen some better hatch activity. Look for caddis in the evening as well as some mayfly spinners. There are also a few Mahogony duns still hatching in the moring and afternoon hours. Ants and beetles have also brought some fish to the surface. In the fast water near Raynold's Pass and Three dollar bridge you will want to fish a high floating hopper in front of the ants and beetles. The fish will eat the hoppers but they are also a great lead fly to help you find where your ant or beetle pattern are at. Nymhing will also produce some good results if you are not seeing much action with the dry flies. Serendipities, copper johns and pheasant tails have all been good flies in this upper wade fishing section. If you are heading to the Valley Garden area you will want to fish early or late. The shallow water can warm up a bit and make mid day fishing a little slow. Caddis hatches have been decent in this area in the evenings.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: Red Legged Hopper # 8-10, Marshmellow Hopper # 8-10, Turk's Taranutla # 8-10, Gorilla Hopper # 8-10, Parachute Hopper # 8-10, PMX Royal # 12-14, Royal Trude # 12-14, Parahcute Ant # 14-16, FLying Ant # 14-16, Red Copper John # 14-18, Bead Head Pheasant Tail # 12-16, King Prince # 12-14, McCunes Sculpin # 2-4, White Zonker # 2-4, Tan Kiwi Muddler # 2-4.

The Lower Madison had cooled off a bit last week but has come right back up with the warm weather. Water temps have been in the high 60's and approaching the 70's in the afternoons over the weekend. I took the family for a quick fun float on Sunday, without any fishing gear, and the temperatures at 1:00 PM were 71 degrees. This water temp is to high to safely practice catch and release fishing. If you head out to the Lower do it early in the morning and get off before the temperatures soar. We should only have another few weeks until the water cools off and we can fish for the fish without risking harm to them. Be patient and enjoy one of the other rivers in the area until the lower cools off.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: Jess's Tan Crayfish # 6-8, Bunny Crayfish # 4-6, Brown Bugger # 6-8, BH Baetis # 14-16, BH Hares Ear # 14-16, BH PT # 14-16, Hotwire Mayfly # 14-16.

Fishing Report: The Lower Madison is not a good option right now due to warm water temperatures from the Solar Panel we call Ennis Lake. The water temperature Thursday morning at 8:15am was 70 degrees. This is a temp that makes catch a release fishing catch and kill fishing. The water temps have been peaking out at around 73 degrees at the end of the day. There are many other great fisheries in the area that will provide better fishing and that are a safe and viable option for practicing catch and release. The other downside, or maybe not, is the number of recreational floaters and inner tubers. I like to refer to this time of year as the "Rubber Hatch" since hundreds of inner tubes and other objects which hold air and allow people to float down the river. The scenery can sometime rival South Beach in Miami and as Jess who works at the shop says you need to have a good line to catch anything on the lower right now. If you are a serious angler and have respect for the fishery you will head to another river right now.

Fly Pattern Suggestions:  "A good pickup line"

Fishing Report:  The Upper Madison has started to fish a bit more consitently over the past week or so. Hatch activity still remains strong with hatches of Caddis, PMD's, and Yellowsallies on the float fishing stretches of the river. If you head upstream to the wade fishing stretch of the river near Raynold's Pass and Three Dollar bridge you may also see some hatches of Mahogony's. Terrestrial action is also starting to pick up with hoppers and some ant patterns. One word of advice to float fishing anglers is to give the middle of the river a shot and stay off the banks. Many of the banks have become shallow with the decreased flows and the fish will find more comfort in deeper water in the middle of the river. The more you float and fish the middle of the river the more you will find that there are a lot of features that will produce fish. Look for changes in the coloration of the water as the depth changes with changes in color. I have also found that the fish really like large flat dark brown rocks on the bottom of the river. It may just be me but I tend to find fish sitting downstream of these colored rocks. Evening fishing has been a little more productive time period and you will also be able to get away from some of the boat traffic if you fish late.
