The Lower Madison had cooled off a bit last week but has come right back up with the warm weather. Water temps have been in the high 60's and approaching the 70's in the afternoons over the weekend. I took the family for a quick fun float on Sunday, without any fishing gear, and the temperatures at 1:00 PM were 71 degrees. This water temp is to high to safely practice catch and release fishing. If you head out to the Lower do it early in the morning and get off before the temperatures soar. We should only have another few weeks until the water cools off and we can fish for the fish without risking harm to them. Be patient and enjoy one of the other rivers in the area until the lower cools off.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: Jess's Tan Crayfish # 6-8, Bunny Crayfish # 4-6, Brown Bugger # 6-8, BH Baetis # 14-16, BH Hares Ear # 14-16, BH PT # 14-16, Hotwire Mayfly # 14-16.

Fishing Report: The Lower Madison is not a good option right now due to warm water temperatures from the Solar Panel we call Ennis Lake. The water temperature Thursday morning at 8:15am was 70 degrees. This is a temp that makes catch a release fishing catch and kill fishing. The water temps have been peaking out at around 73 degrees at the end of the day. There are many other great fisheries in the area that will provide better fishing and that are a safe and viable option for practicing catch and release. The other downside, or maybe not, is the number of recreational floaters and inner tubers. I like to refer to this time of year as the "Rubber Hatch" since hundreds of inner tubes and other objects which hold air and allow people to float down the river. The scenery can sometime rival South Beach in Miami and as Jess who works at the shop says you need to have a good line to catch anything on the lower right now. If you are a serious angler and have respect for the fishery you will head to another river right now.

Fly Pattern Suggestions:  "A good pickup line"

Fishing Report:  The Upper Madison has started to fish a bit more consitently over the past week or so. Hatch activity still remains strong with hatches of Caddis, PMD's, and Yellowsallies on the float fishing stretches of the river. If you head upstream to the wade fishing stretch of the river near Raynold's Pass and Three Dollar bridge you may also see some hatches of Mahogony's. Terrestrial action is also starting to pick up with hoppers and some ant patterns. One word of advice to float fishing anglers is to give the middle of the river a shot and stay off the banks. Many of the banks have become shallow with the decreased flows and the fish will find more comfort in deeper water in the middle of the river. The more you float and fish the middle of the river the more you will find that there are a lot of features that will produce fish. Look for changes in the coloration of the water as the depth changes with changes in color. I have also found that the fish really like large flat dark brown rocks on the bottom of the river. It may just be me but I tend to find fish sitting downstream of these colored rocks. Evening fishing has been a little more productive time period and you will also be able to get away from some of the boat traffic if you fish late.

Fishing Report: The Lower Madison is heating up and the fishing is cooling down. The time of year has come to look at other options rather than stressing the fish on the Lower river. Each year the Lower Madison warms up due to how shallow Ennis Lake is. The lake acts as a solar panel and warms the water temperatures into the low to mid 70's during the middle of the day. The warm water temperatures depleat the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water and puts added stress on the survival of trout. The fish will move into more turbulent water which will have increased oxygen content but catching them in an already stressed state can be a deadly combination. The other aspect which makes fishing a challenge on the Lower River this time of year is the recreational floaters who float down the river at the mercy of the current. They have little control of where they are going and somedays the tubes and other crafts will number in the 100's. Do the fish and yourself a favor and give one of the other area rivers a try. The fish and your experience will thank you.

Fishing Report: Flows are down and stable at around 1000 C.F.S. There are still a few sparse pockets of Salmonflies left around the Three Dollar and Raynold's Pass area. Most of the hatch activity is centered around Caddis and Yellow Sallies. The Yellow Sallies have been comming off very well in the late morning and early afternoon hours with caddis being strongest in the late afternoon and into the evening. The best fishing this past week has definetly been in the afternoon and evening hours. Boat traffic is also less in the afternoon and you will see fewer people. We have been mainly fishing with attractors such as trudes and stimulators with beadhead caddis and mayfly droppers. There are plenty of smaller fish to be taken on the banks, but the larger fish have moved more towards the middle of the river in the deeper water. Fishing in the middle does create some issues with keeping your flies floating so we have had some success fishing foam hopper patterns with the bead head trailers. The foam hoppers float longer and higher and have been as much a strike indicators as they are a fly. The fish have been eating the hoppers on occassion and we should see the fish focus on the hoppers much more in the coming weeks. Traffic has been busy but not unbearable. If you want more solitude try a late afternoon float and fish until dark.

Fishing Report: The Lower Madison is still fishing well as the flows decrease and the water temperatures are starting to warm. In the late afternoon hours we are seeing water temperatures warm up to the low to mid 60's which is still very reasonable for safely practicing catch and release. The water temps will continue to rise over the next couple of weeks so be sure and check the temps when you fish, once water temps reach into the high 60's survival rates for fish begin to decrease. Currently there are some good hatches of Pale Morning Duns and Yellow Sallies in the morning and early afternoon hours with caddis and a white moth like insect in the mid day and evening periods. The dry fly activity has been good and there are plenty of fish feeding on the surface, however the fish that are feeding on top are mainly of the smaller variety. Larger fish are being taken on either bead head nymphs trailed behind your dry of putting on a strike indicator and two subsurface patterns. The streamer fishing has been fair, unless you get some cloud cover. The recreational floaters and tubers will be out in full force over the weekend so you may want to skip fishing during the middle of the day, unless you like the scenery that sits on top of the inner tubes. Fish early and late to avoid the "Rubber Hatch"!!!

Fishing Report: The Upper river is dropping fast, the flows are down around 1300 C.F.S. The fishing remains very good. There are plenty of insects starting to hatch on the river with Salmonflies at the forefront as well as some caddis and Yellow Sallie hatches as well. The Salmonflies are less predictable than they were a week or so ago. The hatch makes a very nice predictable progression to Varney Bridge and then the bugs start to be more sporadic and hatch in different areas on different days. There have been reports of bugs around McAttee as well as some spotted around Lyons Bridge. The bugs could come off on any part of the river right now so pick your favorite stretch and give it a shot. Fishing attractors and beadhead droppers has been productive if you are not seeing many adults or not getting fish to come up to the larger Salmonflies. Chartruese caddis larvae and Red Copper Johns are always a good bet on the Upper river. Boat traffic has been pretty heavy and the extended weekend may see more boats than normal. If you are looking for solitude you may want the try another river right now.

Fishing Report: The flows have jumped again on the lower but the fishing remains good. Some amazing evening and nightime thunderstorms have produced some rain burst that have jumped the flows on the lower river again. They have started to let less water out of Hebgen Reservoir this morning which may drop the flows on the lower river as well in coming days. There has been decent hatches of PMD's, Yellow Sallies and Caddis flies on the lower river. There are still a few sporadic pockets of Salmonflies left inside of the Bear Trap Canyon but the major hatch of Salmonflies is now on the River above Ennis Lake. Nymphing has been the most productive method for larger fish with some smaller fish feeding on the surface. Dead drifting streamers and bead head nymphs along the banks and the edges of the weed beds has been picking up the larger fish. The "Rubber Hatch" has also started and you will have to deal with innertubes and bikini's, which can be very enjoyable somedays.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: Parachute Adams # 12-16, Paracripple PMD # 14-16, PMD Thorax # 14-16, Hackle Stacker PMD # 14-16, PMX Yellow # 10-14, Chuck's Trude # 10-12, Quigley's Stacker Sally # 10-12, Biggies Sally # 10-12, Headlight Sally # 10-12, Olive Bugger # 4-6, Olive Yuk Bug #4-6, Olive Zonker # 4-6, Bh Pheasant Tail # 12-14, Copper John # 12-14, Mangy Caddis # 12-14, Lite Brite Caddis # 12-14, BH Prince # 12-14.

Fishing Report: The Upper Madison river is still very high but it is starting to clear. Dave Kumlien gave us a call on Monday afternoon and they floated from Varney Bridge to Ennis. The float only took them 4 hours and the fishing was good. They did see a couple of adult Salmonflies flying around town and they turned over several rocks at the boat ramp, which were covered with big nymphs. The fishing was good with Bitch Creeks and Yuk Bugs, but the flows are high enough that you will go through a lot of bugs. You also need to make accurate cast because much of the holding water is small and it takes an acurate shot to get the fly in front of them. The river should continue to clear and the big adults will proabably get started within the next couple of days. Keep checking our reports as we will be updating them every day or two for the next couple of weeks.

Fishing Report: The Lower Madison has come up about 600 C.F.S. in the last couple of days but the good news is that the clarity has actually improved slightly. As of Friday morning the river had about a foot of clarity and had a greenish tint to it. The fishing has been fair to midland on the river this week with most of the activity coming below the surface. Nymphing with stonefly patterns and dead drifting streamers has been picking up some fish. We have also had some luck stripping streamers back from the banks. The Salmonfly activity is still a week or two away and if the water stays high we may have some good fishing in the Trap this year. The nymphs are not very close to shore yet so I would not expect to see any adults for at least another week. We will update the report as soon as we see any adults on the river. There have been some sporadic caddis hatching on the river during warm sunny afternoons, which we are not forecasted to see much of over the next week. Sunday is the day they are calling for some warmer drier conditions and that will be your best bet for dry fly activity on the lower. With the wet weather we could see conditions change and the river could get dirty again so don't be surprised if you get to the river and find the conditions are not so favorable.
