Lower Madison River
The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1650 C.F.S. The river is maintaing some clarity and is in fishable condition for the time being. The river above the lake has turned dirty again and we should see the dirty water hit the lower river in the next couple of days. There have been some caddis, goldenstones and a few baetis hatching but the clarity has limited the number of fish on the surface. Nymphing and streamer fishing has been the best method for catching a few fish. Try dead drifting buggers with san juan worms and or stonefly nymphs off the back. The river conditions can change with very little notice this time of year so don't be surprised if the river is not in good shape in the next couple of days.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: Black Conehead Buggers # 4-6, Black Rubberlegs # 4-6, Bitch Creeks # 4-6, Yuk Bug # 4-6 Peacock Caddis # 12-16, Hemingway Caddis # 14-16, Goddard Caddis # 12-14, Parachute Slick Water Caddis # 12-16, Hares Ear Trude # 12-14, Lime Trude # 12-14, Pearl Lite Brite Caddis # 14-16, Mangy Caddis # 14-16

Upper Madison River
The flows at Kirby Ranch have risen to 1430 C.F.S. in the last couple of days. Tributaries such as Cabin Creek, Beaver Creek and the West Fork of the Madison are all running high and dirty. Cabin Creek and Beaver Creek are the two creeks that need to clear so that the river will be in shape for this weekends openning of the Upper portions of the river. At present the weather and the conditions do not look favorable for clear water on this stretch of the river. The river is clean and fishing very well between Hebgen Lake and Cabin Creek. There are still some spawning rainbows in this stretch of the river so be careful and let the spawning fish take care of business.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: Rat Sculpin # 4-6, Whitlocks Sculpin # 4-6, Kiwi Muddler # 4-6, BH Goldenstone # 8-10, Tungstone # 8-10, BH Twenty Incher # 8-10, Biot Stone # 8-10, Bh Prince # 8-12, Red Copper John # 14-18, Red Midge Larvae # 18-20, Olive Midge Larvae # 18-20, Goldilocks # 18-20, Almost a Maggot # 18-20.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse have been going up and down. The current flow this morning was 1830 C.F.S. The river still has some clarity to it but it is only about a foot. The streamer fishing was fair the past couple of days with the cloud cover and rain/snow. There has been some insects hatching including Goldenstones, caddis, baetis and March Browns. The clarity is fairly limiting for the dry fly fishing and your best bets are going to be using large dark colored flies fished under the surface. Clarity has been variable with changes taking place everyday. I would expect to see the river fully get dirty by the first part of next week. The river has been very strange this spring and the clarity could be anyones guess until you get out there.
Fly Pattern Suggestions : Black Conehead Buggers # 4-6, Black Rubberlegs # 4-6, Bitch Creeks # 4-6, Yuk Bug # 4-6 Peacock Caddis # 12-16, Hemingway Caddis # 14-16, Goddard Caddis # 12-14, Parachute Slick Water Caddis # 12-16, Hares Ear Trude # 12-14, Lime Trude # 12-14, Pearl Lite Brite Caddis # 14-16, Mangy Caddis # 14-16

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 1030 C.F.S. The river has been getting dirty but the cooler weather has given us a little reprieve and cleared the river just enough for it to be fishable. The river is still closed from Quake Lake to McAtte Bridge until next Saturday (May 21st). Many of the tributaries are starting to bring down the snowpack and along with it is dirty water. Cabin Creek, Beaver Creek, Wolf Creek, West Fork and other streams will cause most of the coloration in the river. The river from Hedgen Dam downstream for about a quarter of a mile will remain clear throughout the runoff but it will be crowded. We may be alright throughout the weekend on the Upper river but I would expect it to get pretty ugly by Sunday or Monday.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: Rat Sculpin # 4-6, Whitlocks Sculpin # 4-6, Kiwi Muddler # 4-6, BH Goldenstone # 8-10, Tungstone # 8-10, BH Twenty Incher # 8-10, Biot Stone # 8-10, Bh Prince # 8-12, Red Copper John # 14-18, Red Midge Larvae # 18-20, Olive Midge Larvae # 18-20, Goldilocks # 18-20, Almost a Maggot # 18-20.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1330 C.F.S. The caddis are out and the hatch has been a little disapointing so far. Yesterday the conditions were perfect with warm temperatures a little overcast skies and very little wind. The caddis were hatching in good numbers but there were very few fish on the surface feeding. This should change and hopefully today we will see plenty of fish on the surface. The Lower is going to have some crowds on it over the weekend and into next week as the Yellowstone is blown out and the Madison will be the main game in town. When you head to the river don't expect to find lots of solitude. We all have to mind our manners and make the hatch fun for all who are out.
Fly Pattern Suggestions : Peacock Caddis # 12-16, Hemingway Caddis # 14-16, Goddard Caddis # 12-14, Parachute Slick Water Caddis # 12-16, Hares Ear Trude # 12-14, Lime Trude # 12-14, Pearl Lite Brite Caddis # 14-16, Mangy Caddis # 14-16, Swimming Pheasant Tail # 14-16, Hotwire Caddis Gold # 14-16, Hotwire Caddis Green # 14-16.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 1030 C.F.S. The river has come up a bit but the clarity is still in good shape. The river is only open between Hebgen and Quake Lake and McAtte Bridge and Ennis. There are some Goldenstones, caddis and Baetis hatching on the upper river. Don't expect to see a large amount of insects hatching but fishing a dry fly with a bead head dropper has been productive from a boat. Nymphing has been the most productive fishing as of late but many anglers have starred at a strike indicator long enough.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1300 C.F.S. The cold wet weather has helped to stabilize the clarity on the Lower River. Hopefully the river will stay clear for the next few weeks so that we can take advantage of some of the best fishing the rivers offers each year. Spring time is dry fly time on the Lower Madison and right now we are seeing hatches of Baetis and March Browns. The dry fly activity has been put on hold the past couple weeks due to the turning over of Ennis lake as well as high winds that have been keeping the lake from settling and clearing. It appears that this storm system has calmed the winds and the river is starting to clear again. We have had very few reports from the river in the past two weeks but I would not hesitate to head to the lower on the cloudy days and try and get into one of the good baetis hatches. The caddis activity is still a few warm days away and I would expect to maybe see some caddis out by late next week if the forecast is right. We will need several days of warm weather to get the water temperatures up and the caddis flying around. If you would like to receive an update when the caddis start to hatch please sign up for our caddis hatch watch list which is at the top of the report page.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 903 C.F.S. The river is closed from the outlet at Quake Lake to McAttee Bridge and from the Ennis Town Bridge to Ennis Lake. The closures are in affect until the third Saturday in May. The upper river continues to produce good results. We have had reports from Between the lakes as well as around the town of Ennis. Between the lakes we are starting to see some rainbows move into spawning areas and that are not spawning are taking advantage of the free meals. If you are going to head between the lakes be sure and respect those fish which are in the act of spawning. There are a few midges hatching in this area as well but most anlgers have been nymphing with eggs, worms, midge larvae, and stoneflies. If you are planning on fishing the river closer to the town of Ennis you can expect to see a few midges on top but concentrate your efforts more with nymphs in the deeper holes. Goldenstone nymphs trailed with larger midge larvae have been producing some good results. Dead Drifting streamers, especially sculpins has been accounting for some nice fish as well. If you are going to float the upper be ready to hit bottom in places and spend plenty of time on the oars manuevering around rocks. The low flows are making for some challenging rowing.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1320 C.F.S. The river has been very off color for the past week. The lake most likely turned over and brought up the dirty water from the bottom. As of Thursday evening the river was still in pretty ugly shape with approximately 12 to 16 inches of visibility. It did look better than it did on Wednesday but it was still off color. It may clear up nice by the end of the weekend and when it does we should start to see some more consistent dry fly action. We will update this report as soon as the river returns to a good fishable shape.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 860 C.F.S. The river is closed from the outlet at Quake Lake to McAttee Bridge and from the Ennis Town Bridge to the lake. The closures are in affect until the third Saturday in May. The fishing in the stretch between the lakes has been productive but do not get there to early in the morning. The weather has been much cooler in West Yellowstone in the mornings than it has here in the Valley. Nymphing has been the most productive means of taking fish on this stretch. You will have a lot of Whitefish eat your fly but if you are persistent you can get plenty of nice trout to eat as well. The lower section of the upper river has been providing consistent fishing as well. Nymphing is again the name of the game on the stretch between McAttee and Ennis. Dead drifting sculpins or Goldenstone nymphs with small midge larvae trailers has been productive. The fish have been a little picky with the midge larvae and if you hit a slow period try changing the color of your midge.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: Rat Sculpin # 4-6, Whitlocks Sculpin # 4-6, Kiwi Muddler # 4-6, BH Goldenstone # 8-10, Tungstone # 8-10, BH Twenty Incher # 8-10, Biot Stone # 8-10, Bh Prince # 8-12, Red Copper John # 14-18, Red Midge Larvae # 18-20, Olive Midge Larvae # 18-20, Goldilocks # 18-20, Almost a Maggot # 18-20.
