The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1200 C.F.S. The fishing has been good on the madison. The river has seen a good number of anglers on warm days and the fish have been active both below and on top of the surface. Midges are the main surface offering right now and I would expect to see some baetis activity within the next few weeks. Nymphing and streamer fishing has been the most productive method for catching numbers of fish. Dead drifting sculpins and crayfish patterns with a small midge larvae or egg pattern trailer has been very good. We have also had some reports of anglers doing well with Goldenstone patterns and basic nymphs such as Hares Ears, Pheasant Tails and Princes. The streamer fishing from a boat has been productive if you get some cloud cover. In bright sunny conditions the streamer fishing has been slightly less productive. The rainbows are in the act of spawning right now so be careful where you are walking and if you see fish in shallow water give the respect they deserve and let them repopulate the river without being harashed. Enjoy you day on the river, soon the warm weather will be here and the tube hatch will be in full force.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 882 C.F.S. The river is closed from the outlet at Quake Lake to McAttee Bridge and from the Ennis Town Bridge to the lake. The closures are in affect until the third Saturday in May. The fishing in the stretch between the lakes has been productive but do not get there to early in the morning. The weather has been much cooler in West Yellowstone in the mornings than it has here in the Valley. Nymphing has been the most productive means of taking fish on this stretch. You will have a lot of Whitefish eat your fly but if you are persistent you can get plenty of nice trout to eat as well. The lower section of the upper river has been providing consistent fishing as well. Nymphing is again the name of the game on the stretch between McAttee and Ennis. Dead drifting sculpins or Goldenstone nymphs with small midge larvae trailers has been productive. The fish have been a little picky with the midge larvae and if you hit a slow period try changing the color of your midge.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: Rat Sculpin # 4-6, Whitlocks Sculpin # 4-6, Kiwi Muddler # 4-6, BH Goldenstone # 8-10, Tungstone # 8-10, BH Twenty Incher # 8-10, Biot Stone # 8-10, Bh Prince # 8-12, Red Copper John # 14-18, Red Midge Larvae # 18-20, Olive Midge Larvae # 18-20, Goldilocks # 18-20, Almost a Maggot # 18-20.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1550 C.F.S. The Lower river has been providing some very nice days and the fishing has been relatively productive. Nymphing is the most productive method right now with most of the fish being caught in the deep slow moving slots in the river. One of the shop employees fished some streamers on Sunday and he caught on very nice brown trout but nothing else during his 5 hours on the water. There are a few midges hatching and if you really go searching for the fish you may find a few that will feed on an adult midge on the surface. The warm weather has brought folks off the ski hill and sent them rushing to the river. The river was a little busy this weekend and it should calm down once we get some cold weather and some more snow to improve the ski conditions. The midges should start to be more productive as we get into the first and middle part of Febuary.
Fly Pattern Suggestions : BH Lightning Bug #12-16, BH Copper John #14-16, Peacock Anatomay #12-16, BH Pheasant Tail #12-16, King Prince #12-14

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 914 C.F.S. The upper river is in good shape and the fishing has been good. Nymphing has been producing some good results between Hebgen and Quake Lakes. If you are heading to this area of the river bring along plenty of egg patterns and Sanjuan Worms. The whitefish are very active and expect to catch more whitefish than you do trout. You will just have to keep putting the fly in the water and weed through the whitefish. There has been a little bit of midge activity as well but you will find more midges if you head down to the area near the Slide Inn and Raynold's Pass. We have had no reports from anglers fishing in the Ennis area.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1460 C.F.S. The Lower Madison has been producing some very nice fish over the past couple of weeks. The brown trout are doing their annual ritual. Large streamers fished on floating lines have been taking some nice fish. Stripping the fly on cloudy days will produce the best results. If it is bright and sunny out you may want to change tactics and use a dead drift presentation under a strike indicator. The canyon has been the most productive area but we have recieved some good reports from anglers floating the river between Warm Springs and Greycliff as well. If you are going to hike into the canyon I would personally recommend wearing some bright orange clothing since it is hunting season. There are a decent number of big game hunters in pursuit of deer inside of the canyon and it is always a good idea to make sure that they can see that you are a human and not an animal.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 950 C.F.S. The very upper reaches of the river have been fishing very well. There are still some Baetis hatching on cloudy days around the Raynolds Pass and 3 dollar bridge area. The fishing between Hebgen and Quake Lake has also been very productive with nymphs and egg patterns. The brown trout are moving out of the lake and are in there full spawning colors. Nymphing has been the most productive method for catching fish in both areas but keep your eye out for rising fish in the calmer pockets and side channels. We have had a couple of reports from anglers floating the Varney to Town section and the results have been mixed. One customer brought in some pictures of nice browns that they caught on streamers in this area and another customer gave me a report of catching lots of fish but nothing of size in this stretch as well. If you want to get the boat out and try a float this is always a good stretch to give a try.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1320 C.F.S. The lower is fishing well as we move into the fall. Streamers are producing the most consistent days on the river. If the sun is bright the fishing has been much tougher than the days when cloud cover is overhead. We have had some success stripping the streamers but fishing the streamers under a strike indicator and a dead drift has been a little more consistent. We have been trailing a small mayfly nymph or a cdc emerger off the back of the larger flies and many of the fish have been on the smaller bead heads. You can still run into some fish on the surface. There has been a bit of a baetis hatch as well as some midges comming off during the day. The weather will be the main factor in the fish feeding on the surface. Most of the good reports have been comming in from anglers who are taking the time to hike into the canyon a bit and find some deeper holes. If you are on the river keep your eyes open for fish that are spawning. If you find spawning fish please let them do their thing without interference. The browns are just starting to move into the spawning areas and they are putting on lots of great colors. Enjoy the fall and be careful if you hike into the canyon, the rifle hunters are out and while wearing on orange vest may not be a fashion statement it will help to insure that a hunter doesn't mistake you for an animal. Good luck and enjoy the fall fishing on the Lower Madison.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 950 C.F.S. The upper has been very off and on. The most consitent fishing has been in the area near Raynolds Pass and the Slide Inn. We have been still catching a few fish on larger beetle patterns fished up tight to the banks in this area. There are also some sporadic hatches of baetis and midges. If you are fishing lower on the river you will need to pull out the nymphs and streamers for most of the day. You may run into a few rising fish but they have been very inconsistent. Fish are starting to move into the channels above the lake and they are making their way further upstream. Stripping large streamers can offer some very nice fish to the angler. The other area of the river that has been very productive is the section between Hebgen and Quake Lakes. The browns are starting to move into this part of the river and nymphing with egg patterns, san juan worms and large stonefly nymphs has been productive. Streamer fishing has been producing some fish in this area as well.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1380 C.F.S. The lower river is in great shape and the fishing has been fairly consistent. There have been some sporadic baetis hatches on the river and if you get some cloud cover you will see a very nice hatch of the small olive mayflies. There are also still some caddis comming off in the late afternoon and evening hours and the fish are still looking for them. There are not a lot of caddis but there appears to be enough to keep the fishes interest in them. The best dry fly fishing has been inside of the Bear Trap Canyon and those willing to hike a bit have been getting into some decent late season dry fly fishing. If you hike into the canyon concentrate your efforts in the slicks downstream of the rocks in the middle of the river. A dry dropper rig is very effective and be ready for the fish to eat the dry on many occassions. The streamer fishing has been marginal due to the bright sunny weather over the past two weeks. Once the sun starts to set or if we have some clouds the fish will chase down a streamer. During the bright sunny weather try dead drifting the streamers trailed with a small beadhead mayfly nymph or emerger pattern. I tried fishign a hopper pattern for a while on Thursday and the fish showed no interest in them at all. It appears that the hopper fishing is done until next year.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 975 C.F.S. The upper river has been fishing well. There are many faces to the upper river and your choice in section will dictate what you want to be throwing. If you are on the river near Ennis it is time to dead drift of strip streamer patterns for the Browns that are migrating for the spawning activities later this month. Nymphing has also been productive in this stretch of river. If you are on the middle reaches of the upper river we have still been having some success fishing dry dropper rigs along the deeper banks and in the deep trenches in the middle of the river. The fishing has been a little fickle and you may need to try several different flies until you find the one they are keyed in on. Some days the fish have showed little interest in bead head flies and we have been trailing non beaded nymphs with a small split shot or putty weight off the dry fly. Full nymph rigs have been good as well but you will go through plenty of flies as the flows are low. The upper reaches near Raynolds Pass and 3 dollar bridge has been decent with dry flies still. Terrestrials such as large beetle patterns and ants have been taking fish. There are also still some hatches comming off and you can play the match the hatch a game a bit on this area of the river. Nymphing is always productive in the faster deeper water of the upper river, but we have all winter to look at strike indicators. The browns should start to be moving into the area between the lakes and this can produce some large fish in the fall.
