The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1290 C.F.S.  The lower Madison has been providing some of the best fishing in the area over the last few weeks.  The Crayfish have been molting and the fish are definetly keying in on them with beacuse of the softer shell and the hearty meal that they provide the trout.  Baetis activity really kicked off on Sunday the 12th and we should see some solid baetis activity for the next few weeks.  The weather will be a big factor in the hatch and try and get out on the overcast days with high humidty and even some rain or snow showers.  The higher humidity makes it tougher for the insects to dry their wings and get off the water.  Bright sunny days will see a smaller hatch that will only last for a short period of time.  There has also been some psuedocleons hatching as well and they are really nothing more than a smaller baetis.  Scientifically they are different but in the eye of the trout there is not much difference other than size.  You may also see a large white mayfly hatching which is called an efron leucon, probably the wrong spelling, these large mayflies will be available to the trout however I personally have not had much success trying to imitate them.  The streamer acitivity is very productive when the insects are not hatching due to the crayfish molt.  We have had good success with both a stripped fly as well as dead drifting them behind a strike indicator.  The most productive techingue for numbers is to dead drift the crayfish patterns and trail them with a small bead head mayfly or caddis larvae off the back.  Stripping the fly will generally produce larger fish, but not as many.  Give both techiniques a try and see which works best for you.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 1000 C.F.S.  We have still been getting some fish to eat hoppers with a dropper off the back.  Large beetle patterns and ant patterns are also taking some fish.  There is not a large october caddis hatch on the upper madison river, however the fish have been eating a large tan or orange caddis pupae on a regular basis.  Hatch activity has been slow on the lower portions of the upper madison and if you are looking for more match the hatch type of fishing head for the very upper reaches near the slide inn and 3 dollar bridge.  This area of the river has more spring influence and consistent water temps from Hebgen lake, thus producing more hatch activity. There are still some caddis out as well as a hodge podge of mayflys.  Terrestrial fishing has been good and the late fall beetle fishing can be very good in this part of the Madison.  Streamers are also starting to produce a few fish on the upper river and can be worth the effort if you hook into one of the large fish that call the madison home.

Fly Pattern Suggestions:   Bh Prince #6-10, Mangy Caddis #14-16, Hotwire Caddis #12-16, Copper John #12-14, Elk Hair Caddis #12-14, Royal Stimulator #10-14, Parachute Adams #14-16, Chernobly Hopper #8-10, Daves Hopper #8-10, Chubby Chernobly #6-8, Foam Flying Ant #12-14.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 1030 C.F.S.  This weeks weather has made for some interesting fishing on the upper river.  We have been fishing smaller bead heads trailed behind small golden stones and streamers.  The weather forecast is for warmer sunny weather and I would expect to see the fish go right back to eating the hoppers and ant patterns that were effective last week.  Many of the rivers will be fishing much differently than they have this week as we move back to more average weather patterns for August.  The wet weather is great,  but it does create some varying conditions and can spur some hatch activity that we would otherwise not see this time of year.  If you like to fish more match the hatch fishing than head to the very upper reaches of the river near Raynold's Pass and Three dollar bridge.  Baetis and caddis have been hatching along with a few pmd's and other mayflies that have been very inconsistent.

Fly Pattern Suggestions:   Bh Prince #6-10, Mangy Caddis #14-16, Hotwire Caddis #12-16, Copper John #12-14, Elk Hair Caddis #12-14, Royal Stimulator #10-14, Parachute Adams #14-16, Chernobly Hopper #8-10, Daves Hopper #8-10, Chubby Chernobly #6-8, Foam Flying Ant #12-14.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1170 C.F.S.  The unseasonably cooler weather we have had thus far in August have the water temperatures lower than normal for this time of year.  Water temps on the lower Madison are usually above 70 degrees this time of year, which makes catch and release fishing tough.  The water temps as of late have been starting out around 65 degrees in the morning and reaching about 70 by late afternoon.  The cooler temps in the morning are fine for fishing right now, however if you are going to fish the lower Madison please carry a thermometer and check the temps as the heat of the day approaches.  Fish start to struggle to survive when the water temps approach 70 degrees.  Limit your fishing to early morning hours so that the fish can make it through this warm spell on the river.  By mid day the recreational tubers will be out in full force and you will have a tough time concentrating on your fly anyways.  We have had no real reports of fishing on the river so if you head out to the river you will have to experiement with your fly selection.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 988 C.F.S.  The Upper river is starting to fish hopperific.  Hoppers are the main game on the upper madison right now.  There are also a few flying ants and some caddis activity on the river.  You may also see some other aquatic hatches but they have been fairly sporadic.  Dry dropper rigs are your best bet and concentrate on fishing the middle of the river and the deeper buckets next to the large boulders.  If you are floating and you fish the banks you will find plenty of small fish that are eager to eat your flies.  The larger fish tend to be in the middle of the river when the flows drop in the later part of the summer.  Hoppers with a small bead head caddis larvae or small mayfly nymph has been the most productive fishing for those floating the river.  If you are a wading angler try fishing the river close to Raynold's Pass and the Three Dollar Bridge area.  Hatches are more prominent in this part of the river and it is a wade fishing only stretch of river.  You may see a boat or two on this part of the river, which is well within the limits of the regulations, they are just not allowed to fish while they are in the boat.  Hoppers and Beetle patterns have been producing well during the middle of the day on this part of the river and in the evening you can have some great success fishing attractor patterns and caddis imitations to rising fish.  If you are going to wade fish the Valley Garden area near Ennis do it early in the morning or late at night.  The water temps warm up during the heat of the day because the river is shallow and branches into so many channels in this area.  The caddis activity has been good in the Valley Garden area late in the evening and up until dark.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1160 C.F.S.  As of Friday morning the water temperature was 60 degrees.  The fishing has been very good this week on the lower river.  There is not a lot of hatch activity, however the nymph fishing has been very consistent.  Typically we are not fishing the lower this time of year due to warm water temperatures but the cool wet weather has cooled the river off nicely and the fishing has been good.  Once we return to normal August weather the river may warm back up and the fishing could really slow again.  Keep your eyes on the water temps and if the river gets back up around 70 degrees let the fish be.  Most of the reports from our guides and other anglers fishing the river have been about the same.  Crayfish or Sculpin patterns trailed with small bead head mayfly nymphs has been the fly combination.  With some sunshine you can get a few fish to come up to a hopper pattern as well.  Get out and enjoy the cooler weather and hopefully we will continue on with the moisture and nice air temps.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1730 C.F.S.  Pulse flows are starting and we are seeing some fluctuation in the flow of water from Ennis Dam.  As of 8 am this morning the water temp on the lower river was at 71 degrees which is much too warm for anglers to safely pratice catch and release fishing.   Please respect the great resource that we have in the lower madison river and let the fish have the best chance at getting through this tough period on the lower river.  If you see anglers on the river please do not hesitate to try and inform them of the situation with the lower madison and ask them to please fish elsewhere.
