The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1160 C.F.S.  As of Friday morning the water temperature was 60 degrees.  The fishing has been very good this week on the lower river.  There is not a lot of hatch activity, however the nymph fishing has been very consistent.  Typically we are not fishing the lower this time of year due to warm water temperatures but the cool wet weather has cooled the river off nicely and the fishing has been good.  Once we return to normal August weather the river may warm back up and the fishing could really slow again.  Keep your eyes on the water temps and if the river gets back up around 70 degrees let the fish be.  Most of the reports from our guides and other anglers fishing the river have been about the same.  Crayfish or Sculpin patterns trailed with small bead head mayfly nymphs has been the fly combination.  With some sunshine you can get a few fish to come up to a hopper pattern as well.  Get out and enjoy the cooler weather and hopefully we will continue on with the moisture and nice air temps.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1170 C.F.S.  The unseasonably cooler weather we have had thus far in August have the water temperatures lower than normal for this time of year.  Water temps on the lower Madison are usually above 70 degrees this time of year, which makes catch and release fishing tough.  The water temps as of late have been starting out around 65 degrees in the morning and reaching about 70 by late afternoon.  The cooler temps in the morning are fine for fishing right now, however if you are going to fish the lower Madison please carry a thermometer and check the temps as the heat of the day approaches.  Fish start to struggle to survive when the water temps approach 70 degrees.  Limit your fishing to early morning hours so that the fish can make it through this warm spell on the river.  By mid day the recreational tubers will be out in full force and you will have a tough time concentrating on your fly anyways.  We have had no real reports of fishing on the river so if you head out to the river you will have to experiement with your fly selection.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 1000 C.F.S.  The Upper river is starting to fish hopperific.  Hoppers are the main game on the upper madison right now.  There are also a few flying ants and some caddis activity on the river.  You may also see some other aquatic hatches but they have been fairly sporadic.  Dry dropper rigs are your best bet and concentrate on fishing the middle of the river and the deeper buckets next to the large boulders.  If you are floating and you fish the banks you will find plenty of small fish that are eager to eat your flies.  The larger fish tend to be in the middle of the river when the flows drop in the later part of the summer.  Hoppers with a small bead head caddis larvae or small mayfly nymph has been the most productive fishing for those floating the river.  If you are a wading angler try fishing the river close to Raynold's Pass and the Three Dollar Bridge area.  Hatches are more prominent in this part of the river and it is a wade fishing only stretch of river.  You may see a boat or two on this part of the river, which is well within the limits of the regulations, they are just not allowed to fish while they are in the boat.  Hoppers and Beetle patterns have been producing well during the middle of the day on this part of the river and in the evening you can have some great success fishing attractor patterns and caddis imitations to rising fish.  If you are going to wade fish the Valley Garden area near Ennis do it early in the morning or late at night.  The water temps warm up during the heat of the day because the river is shallow and branches into so many channels in this area.  The caddis activity has been good in the Valley Garden area late in the evening and up until dark.

Fly Pattern Suggestions:   Bh Prince #6-10, Mangy Caddis #14-16, Hotwire Caddis #12-16, Copper John #12-14, Elk Hair Caddis #12-14, Royal Stimulator #10-14, Parachute Adams #14-16, Chernobly Hopper #8-10, Daves Hopper #8-10, Chubby Chernobly #6-8, Foam Flying Ant #12-14.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1730 C.F.S.  Pulse flows are starting and we are seeing some fluctuation in the flow of water from Ennis Dam.  As of 8 am this morning the water temp on the lower river was at 71 degrees which is much too warm for anglers to safely pratice catch and release fishing.   Please respect the great resource that we have in the lower madison river and let the fish have the best chance at getting through this tough period on the lower river.  If you see anglers on the river please do not hesitate to try and inform them of the situation with the lower madison and ask them to please fish elsewhere.

The Fishing Factor - July25th, 2004

As we reach the midway point of our summer season our schedule is starting to ease up a bit from the June/July rush. Our tactics are changing a bit, from the gentlemans hours of 9 to 6 in the spring to a bit more aggresive schedule - launching the boat at 0600, being off the water by 2 in the afternoon. Although we are not experiencing the 100+ degree days of summers past, it is still hot. An afternoon/evening float is producing well for us as well - there are plenty of fish looking up as the caddis start moving when the sun goes down. It is a good feeling sliding the boat off the trailer as most of the others are taking out - heading back to the lodge. Evenings are cool, the wildlife (and the fish) are more active and I like it. Summer tactics, for summer fish. Its whats going on around here.

There are hoppers on the Madison, hoppers on the Beav, hoppers on the Big Hole, hoppers on the Ruby, hoppers on the Yellowstone, and dont forget the summer stonefly. Just because you dont see them, doesnt mean they arent there. The attentive angler will see schucks along the rocks on all of these rivers - but they are nocturnal. Unlike the very evident salmonfly hatch of 1 month ago - these fish only see them in the wee hours, and they know it. The nymphs are there, the fish eat them on a regular basis as well, but to get them to eat it on top - you better be fishing the first or last hour of the day.

As far as the catching - the big fish are out to play. The day after the wedding, I floated with my two cousins - some 10 years had passed since we wet a line together - and we saw more big fish to the fly in one day than I have ever seen. The weeks since then have been steadily producing several opportunities per day at larger than average fish.

With August right around the corner, the hopper fishing should get nothing but better, the foothills are green, the rivers have water and we have a few openings. Maw nature is taking good care of us sportsmen this year with daily rainstorms minus the dry lightning, and the word around the campfire is that the fire season that so many run from is gioing to be minimal. If you have a hankering to toss a fly to the banks in Montana this fall, and havent already made your reservations, now is the time - who knows, your picture could be on the next newsletter with a 20"+ Montana brwon trout.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1160 C.F.S.  It doesn't appear that they have started the pulse flowing that normally comes along with the heat of summer.  It would expect to see some pulses of water in the river soon.  As of 8 am this morning the water temp on the lower river was at 73 degrees which is much too warm for anglers to safely pratice catch and release fishing.   Please respect the great resource that we have in the lower madison river and let the fish have the best chance at getting through this tough period on the lower river.  If you see anglers on the river please do not hesitate to try and inform them of the situation with the lower madison and ask them to please fish elsewhere.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 1030 C.F.S.  The upper river has been fishing well during the bright sunny days.  I was on the river yesterday and we had extremely variable weather conditions which made for some tough fishing.  All the boats that we talked to had similiar fishing which was very marginal.  I believe that the weather had a big role in the poor fishing and I would not hesitate to fish the river again if the weather is more stable.  We did turn some fish on Hoppers and we were able to hook up some fish on caddis larvae droppers.  The hatch activity has slowed but there were still a few PMD's a good number of Yellow Sallies and plenty of caddis still out.  I also had several flying ants land inside of the boat but we had no luck with fishing comming up to ant imitations.  If you get some bright sunny weather I would not hesitate to give the ants a try.  You need to have a high floating ant pattern on the upper river and generally a royal trude is tough to beat for matching the ant hatch.  Most of the fish that we did catch were off the banks and in the middle of the river so don't be afraid to move out into the middle of the river and fish some of the deeper water.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1430 C.F.S.  If you must fish the lower river do it early in the morning or late in the evening.  Water temps in the am are around 65 degrees and it is warming up to around 70 degrees by late afternoon.  These water temps are hard of caught fish due to the lower dissolved oxygen content in the water and the build up of acids in the fish when they are stressed during the fight.  The other issue on the lower madison this time of year is the amount of pleasure floaters and tubers who have no control of where they are going.  The lower madison is a recreational play ground in the summer months and there is little room for anglers during this time frame.  You will have a much better experience if you try somewhere else.
