Madison River - Upper - June 24th, 2004
supplied by: The Stonefly Inn
FISHING: Good
The stonefly saga continues..... first of all, I apologize for the lack of reports since earlier this month. My office time has been greatly reduced by the number of fishermen visiting this valley. Top that off with the fact that I am much better at sitting on the deck with a cold one than working with my computer and you have a recipe for late evening cocktails, and out of date fishing reports. Enough about my life though - and on to the fishing. At this point, it doesnt really matter wich launch you use on any of our local rivers - you will see bugs of some sort, and catch fish with a variety of techniques. The Big Hole is dropping and running clear, the Beaverhead is producing its normal oversized, size 20 pmd eating browns, and the Madison is covered up with salmonflies. The big bugs are out, and although the fish seem a bit gorged with the nymphs they are definately starting to look up for a floating meal. You will find that the dead drifted fly may not produce as well as say, one that is twiched and stripped. Drag free is definately not an issue over there. The next two weeks should be stellar fishing over on the Maddy as the adults start hatching and coming back to the water to drop eggs. As of today, there are bugs from Story ditch down to Ennis. On the Big Hole, there are yellow sallies, pmd's, green drakes and a few caddis fluttering around - it seems the fish flat dont care at times what you throw at them.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 900 C.F.S. The river is clearing below the West Fork and the fishing is heating up on the lower river close to Ennis. The river is dirty green and in good shape for fishing. There have been no adults as of yet, however we are very close to seeing the adults on the river near Ennis. The big nymphs are working their way to the banks and we may see some adults start to hatch by mid week. The weather forecast looks good for the hatch to start sometime this week and if you can take anytime off from work you may want to try and get out. Flows are on the low side but it should not hender the early fishing on the lower portions of the upper. We may also see the power company let out some water as the rainbow fry begin to emerge from the gravel. This is an ongoing project that the power company has been working on to try and manage the Whirling Disease issue on the Madison river. The flows have been low because they are storing water to release when the fry come out of the gravel. If you would like more information on the project visit the Whirling Disease Foundation website or email for extra details.

FISHING: Poor
Stream Flow Information [click here] Madison River Montana FWP Guide [click here] South ForkMadison River Montana FWP Guide [click here] West Fork Madison River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 3030 C.F.S. The river has made a drastic jump from 1650 C.F.S. on Thursday. The huge amount of rain that we recieved on Thursday has spiked the flows and turned the river off color. As of Friday morning the river had about 4 to 6 inches of visibility. This may change over the weekend as the rain lets up and the flows drop. This weekend may be a tough one for fishing the rivers in the area because of all the rain from Thursday and Friday. If you do not live in the Bozeman area we recieved close to two inches of rain on Thursday and many of the rivers have seen drastic increases in flows. I would expect to see the flows drop over the next few days, however it may take a day or two until the clarity returns. If you really want to get out the good news is that the higher water will push the fish to the banks and the streamer fishing could get very good for a couple of days until the flows drop back into the 1500 C.F.S. range. It doesn't take much clarity for streamer fishing to be productive either. The Salmonfly hatch is in full swing however it has been very sporadic this year. The adults have only been in small pockets this year and we have not seen the hatch really blow up with bugs everywhere. Keep your eyes in the bushes as you hike around the river and if you find some adults flying in the air or in the bushes give the dry flies a try. Nymphing has been good on the entire river and concentrate on fishing the larger nymphs in the deeper pockets and in the faster water inside of the Bear Trap Canyon Wilderness area. The streamer fishing has been very good on the river outside of the canyon. It is most likely going to slow a bit as the water continues to drop. The higher water spread the fish out a bit and moved them to the banks where the anglers fishing from boats could target them a little easier. The crayfish are also molting so dead drifting a crayfish imtation has been productive. The fish really like the crayfish when they molt because there shells are soft and they are easier to digest. There has also been some nice hatch activity that is not centered around the Salmonflies. Pmd's, Caddis and Yellowsallies have been hatching in very good numbers and if you want some good dry fly fishing you can have a ball matching the hatch. The river should stay in pretty good shape, however the upper river has been very dirty and there is a real good possibility that the muddy water could make it's way through the lake and turn the lower river into mud as well. We will continue to update this report as the conditions change.

Stream Flow Information [click here] Madison River Montana FWP Guide [click here] South ForkMadison River Montana FWP Guide [click here] West Fork Madison River Montana FWP Guide [click here] The flows at Kirby Ranch are 1120 C.F.S. The river is completely shot from the West Fork to Ennis lake. The West Fork is dumping large amounts of dirty water. There is a small strip of fishable water from Lyons Bridge down to just above Palisades if you really are looking for a section to float fish. The river above the West Fork was still is fishable shape at 4:30 pm when I called the Slide Inn. Bill at the Slide Inn said that the skies had just cleared from a 40 minute rainstorm that was very heavy and laid down a lot of water. They also had some snow on the ground this morning from last nights showers so we may see Cabin Creek and Beaver Creek run some dirty water through Quake lake which could put a halt to the fishing near Slide Inn and Raynolds pass for the weekend. Give Kelly or Bill a call at the Slide Inn (406) 682-4804 if you are thinking of heading to the upper river this weekend. They can give you a up to the minute report on the rivers conditions since it is right out their back door. Bill said they had some good baetis activity this morning. This may be a spot to try for the weekend.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1280 1640 C.F.S. and dropping. The river took a large jump in flows on Monday and it has been decreasing on a daily basis. The clarity remains good as of today with about 3 feet of clarity. The Salmonfly hatch is in full swing however it has been very sporadic this year. The adults have only been in small pockets this year and we have not seen the hatch really blow up with bugs everywhere. The flows at Kirby Ranch are 1130 C.F.S. The river is green above the West Fork of the Madison. Below the West fork the river is really dirty and pretty unfishable. If you want to fish the upper try the area near Reynolds pass or between the lakes. Cabin and Beaver creek are both running high and dirty so if you fish between the lakes there is only the short stretch of river that is clear until Cabin creek enters the river. There are some midges and baetis hatching on the upper reaches of the river but the clarity is not quite good enough for the fish to be real interested in feeding on the surface. Nymphing has been good though in the greenish water and keep your fly patterns dark in color so that the fish can make out the fly easier.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1280 C.F.S. The Salmonflies are just starting to fly. There are a few bugs in the Bear Trap Canyon as of Wednesday. The larger hatch was between Cherry Creek and Greycliff on Wednesday. I would expect to see the fishing in the Canyon to be very good over the weekend and into the middle of next week. The water is not as high as it typically is for the hatch so don't be afraid to move off the banks and try some of the water in the middle of the river. I caught most of my fish out off the banks in the deeper water on Wednesday. There is also a lot of caddis and Pale Morning duns hatching in the middle of the day. The water temps are just right for the fish and even the little guys will give you quite a tussle right now. The larger fish will definetly be targeting the big bugs, however with the lower flows you may want to trail a small caddis pattern off the back for targeting all the fish in the system. Get out and enjoy the Salmonfly hatch. One note to keep in the back of your mind when you head out, the Salmonfly hatch draws lots of anglers and there will definetly be some people on the river. Be courteous and give everyone some room to fish. There is plenty of water on the lower to fish and you do not need to fish just above an angler who is working their way upstream. Treat others as you would expect to be treated. Have fun and enjoy.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 850 C.F.S. The Upper river is starting to get some color in it from the West Fork, Cabin Creek and Beaver Creek. The river is still very fishable and there has been some hatch activity on the river. Look for Goldenstones and Caddis on the stretches close to Ennis and Baetis and Midges on the upper reaches near Slide Inn. Fishing between the lakes has also been good with basic nymph patterns, san juan womrs and streamers. Hebgen Lake is fishing well if you would like to try some stillwater fishing. Jumbo midges have been hatching along the northern shore line when the wind is not too strong. Stripping small buggers and leach patterns is also very productive if it is too windy for the midges.

The flows at the Ennis Powerhouse are 1150 C.F.S. The Lower continues to fish very well. The river has maintained good clarity with a little bit of dirty water comming in from Cherry Creek and Warm Springs Creek. Hatch activity has been mainly centered around Pale Morning Duns, however keep your eyes out for Goldenstones and caddis which have been hatching as well. The Salmonfly hatch is just days away from happening and I would expect to see some adults by late next week if not sooner. The nymphs are getting close to the shore lines and I would expect to see some adults when the weather warms up. This weekends weather may delay the big bugs for a bit, we will have to wait and see what mother nature gives us. I would just assume she continue with the weather pattern we have had for the past two weeks.

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 723 C.F.S. The river is very low and it should fish very well for the oppening of the general trout fishing season on Saturday. Clarity will be very good and you should expect to see some good midge hatches as well as some blue winged olives on the upper river near Slide Inn. If you are planning on floating the river you may want to check the flows in the morning before you leave. The flows have been sliding downward as the tributaries have dropped with the cooler weather and the fact that they are trying to get some water stored in Hebgen Lake for the summer. The fishing on the lower end of the upper river has been good with some caddis activity as well as some goldenstones. Nymphing with caddis larvae and stonefly nymphs has been productive. The lower flows will make for better wade fishing versus the fishing from the boat. Expect to see some crowds on the river this weekend as many people from the states south of us will make the trek to the Upper river. Fishing between the lakes has been very good and if you want some solitude try fishing Hebgen Lake itself. The Jumbo Midges have been hatching and there have been some good reports of dry fly and indicator fishing on the lake. Some good areas to fish the lake are near the Old Lodge site just up from the Dam, The shore just to the east of the Happy hour bar and also near the narrows.
