Madison River - Lower - April 27th, 2004

FISHING: Good
Stream Flow Information [click here] Madison River Montana FWP Guide [click here] South ForkMadison River Montana FWP Guide [click here] West Fork Madison River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
Flows at the Powerhouse are 1320 C.F.S. The caddis have arrived and the fishing is heating up. To this point fishing pupae and emergers has proven more effective than the adult patterns. That should be changing within the next couple of days when the fish really get keyed in on the adults. Visibility is decent with about 2 feet of visibility. Keep your eyes open for some larger golden stones that hatch at the same time and provide the trout with an even larger meal. I like to fish a large Olive or Yellow Stimulator trailed with the smaller caddis imitation on the back. This is a great way to fish the caddis hatch because you are covering both the caddis and the Goldenstones at the same time. The larger fly also helps you to see where your flies are in relationship to all the other caddis on the water. The caddis should hatch for another two to three weeks before we have runoff. The mother's day hatch is something that everyone should at least witness once in their lifetime, we should all feel blessed to have the opportunity to have it take place in our back yard.
Fly Pattern Suggestions : Yellow Stimulator #8-10, Olive Stimulator #8-14, Elk Hair Caddis #12-16, Peacock Caddis #12-16, X Caddis #12-16, Parachute Caddis #14-16, Slow Water Caddis #14-16, E-Z Caddis #14-16, BH Mangy Caddis #14-16, Caddis Poopah #14-16, Hotwire Caddis #14-16, Sparkle Pupae #14-16.

Madison River - Upper - April 27th, 2004

The flows at Kirby Ranch are 925 C.F.S. The Upper is fishing very well and it is probably the least crowded river in the area right now. The caddis hatch is drawing lots of attention from anglers on the lower river and on the Yellowstone. The Upper is a sleeper of a river this time of year and can be well worth a trip. There has been some caddis out on the upper river and there are a few fish feeding on the surface. The most productive fishing has been with nymphs fished deep on the bottom. Try fishing a large brown or black stone fly pattern with a small caddis or midge larvae off the back. Dry dropper rigs have also been very productive if you really can't stand to look at another strike indicator. There are still two closures in affect on the upper river. The river is closed from Ennis lake upstream to the Ennis town bridge. The second closure runs from McAttee Bridge upstream to the outlet of Quake lake. This will all reopen on the 15th of May when the small streams open. If you want to fish for some large migrating fish try the section between Quake lake and Hebgen dam. The snow has melted and you can drive a vehicle down past the fireside lodge to the area that the river dumps into Quake Lake. Fish have been moving out of the lake to use the river for spawining acitivty and there are plenty of egg poachers laying in wait for an easy meal.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: BH Golden Stone #6-8, BH Black Stone #6-8, Ugly Bug #6-8, Turd Blossom Special #6-8, BH Caddis Poopah #12-14, Hotwire Caddis #12-14, BH Mangy Caddis #14-16, Green Weenie #16-18, BH Pheasant Tail #12-16, Elk Hair Caddis #12-14, Peacock Caddis #12-14, Royal Stimulator #10-14, Hares Ear Trude #10-12.
Stream Closure in affect from Quake Lake Outlet to McAttee Bridge until 3rd Saturday in May!!

Madison River - Lower - April 14th, 2004

FISHING: Fair
Stream Flow Information [click here] Madison River Montana FWP Guide [click here] South ForkMadison River Montana FWP Guide [click here] West Fork Madison River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
Flows at the Dam are 232 C.F.S. and at the Powerhouse they are 1130 C.F.S. The lake has finished it's annual turn over and the river is again clear and fishable. The bright sunny weather has made for some tough conditions outside of the Bear Trap Canyon. The fish are in the deeper water, with the exception of the spawning rainbows. If you are fishing on the lower be careful of the fish that are in the shallow water. They are spawning and if you are a true sportsman you will let them do what they need to do. Concentrate on fishing the deeper water below the spawning fish, you will find some nice browns that are taking advantage of an easy meal. Hatch activity has consisted of some good midge hatches with some sproadic Baetis activity mixed in. The bright sunny weather has made for less than ideal dry fly fishing, but hopefully the weather is going to take a turn for the better and the fishing on the surface will improve. Nymphing has been the best approach as of late. Fish a crayfish or sculpin pattern with either an egg or a small beadhead mayfly pattern of the back. The dry fly activity has been best during the last hour of daylight and look for it to improve with some more clouds and wet weather which is forecasted for the later part of the week and into the weekend. If you are going to head up to the dam be very careful of the spawning fish, there are plenty of fish in the area below the dam and if we do not mind our P & Q's we may loose this fishery.
Fly Pattern Suggestions : Brown Yuk Bug #4-6, Brown Buggers #4-8, Kiwi Muddlers #6-8, Rat Sculpin #4-6, Brown Keep's Crayfish #6, Egg Patterns #10, San Juan Worms #8, BH Pheasant Tail #12-16, Lightning Bug #12-16, Hares Ear Anatomay #14-16, BH Prince #10-12, Red Copper John #14-18, Mother Shucker #20-22, Griffith's Gnat #16-18, Parachute Adams #18-20, RS2 #16-20.

Madison River - Upper - April 14th, 2004

FISHING: Fair
Stream Flow Information [click here] Madison River Montana FWP Guide [click here] South ForkMadison River Montana FWP Guide [click here] West Fork Madison River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
The flows at Kirby Ranch are 912 C.F.S. The upper river has several closure in affect now and you will want to check the regulations before you go. Basically the regulations are as follows: From Hebgen Dam to Quake Lake is open to fishing. From Quake Lake outlet to McAttee Bridge is closed until the third saturday in May. From McAttee Bridge to The Ennis Town Bridge is open to fishing. From the Ennis Town Bridge to the Lake is closed until the third Saturday in May. If you have any questions about the closures please give us a call or call the Bozeman Fish Wildlife and Parks office. Fishing on the river between Hebgen and Quake Lakes has been good with dark stonefly patterns and small midge larvae. Fish are moving out of Quake and into the river so some nice fish have been caught. There is still a decent amount of snow in this area and if you want to get down to the mouth of the river you will be post holing through the snow. The river from McAttee Bridge to Ennis is also fishing well with nymphs, stripping streamers has produced some good results as well. Most people think that fall is the best time to strip streamers but I have had some very good days in the early spring stripping them as well. Dead drifting large unweighted Sculpin patterns has also accounted for some nice fish as of late. Floating is the most productive method for stripping streamers. If you are wade fishing I would suggest fishing the river near the town of Ennis, a large unweighted Sculpin pattern trailed with an egg pattern has been producing some good results. The key to fishing the Sculpins to match the color of your fly to the color of the sky. If it is bright and sunny fish a light colored fly, if the skies are dark fish a dark colored fly. Sculpins adapt their color to the light that surrounds them. This is a great time of year to catch a large fish on the upper river. The best fishing in the area right now has been the stretch of river from Varney to Ennis. Nymphing has been the best approach. Try fishing Golden Stones, small beadhead mayfly or caddis imitations and dead drifted Sculpins. The flows are low so if you float this section be prepared to hit a rock or two on the float.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: BH Pheasant Tail #12-16, Lightning Bug #12-16, Hares Ear Anatomay #14-16, BH Prince #10-12, Red Copper John #14-18, Egg Patterns #10, San Juan Worms #8, Red Midge Larvae #18-20, Olive Midge Larvae #18-20, Zoo Cougar #2-6, McCune's Sculpin #2-6, Double Bunnies #4-6, Kiwi Muddlers #2-6.

Madison River - Lower - April 6th, 2004
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Fair
Stream Flow Information [click here]
Flows on the lower have been fluctuating a bit. Flows at the dam are 224 C.F.S. and below the powerhouse they are 1130 C.F.S. Ennis lake has turned over and the river is very off color. I was on the river on Saturday and there was about 5 inches of visibility. We drove up to the lake and over half of the lake water is dirty. I would expect it will take a week or so for the colored water to move through the river system. We may see a change for the better by the end of the week if we are lucky. I will repost this report as the water clarity improves. If you must fish the Lower fish large dark flies on a short leader. There are still very good numbers of midges and there are also some baetis hatching. I did not see any fish on the surface while I was out on the river.
Fly Pattern Suggestions : Egg Patterns #10, San Juan Worms #8, BH Pheasant Tail #12-16, Lightning Bug #12-16, Hares Ear Anatomay #14-16, BH Prince #10-12, Red Copper John #14-18, Mother Shucker #20-22, Griffith's Gnat #16-18, Parachute Adams #18-20, RS2 #16-20.

Madison River - Lower - March 19th, 2004
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Great
Stream Flow Information [click here]
Flows on the lower are 1430 C.F.S below the Powerhouse and 107 C.F.S. below the dam. The Lower Madison has been red hot this past week. There has been substantial midge activity and there are plenty of fish up feeding on the surface. Many of the fish on the surface are smaller fish but you can expect to see a few nicer fish mixed in. After a long winter of staring at strike indicators it is always refreshing to see a fish eat a dry. Wind has been a factor with the hatch but we have still been seeing some fish on the surface even on the windy days. Cloudy weather is really the key to the dry fly activity. Bright sunny weather will have good hatches, the fish are just less likely to move into the shallower water to feed on them. If you don't find rising fish try fishing a small bugger trailed with either an egg pattern or a small mayfly nymph. Lightning bugs, black copper john's and wonder nymphs have all been producing subsurface. Get out while the weather is overcast, you will definetely enjoy it.

Flows on the lower are 1440 C.F.S at the Powerhouse and 124 C.F.S. coming out of the dam.; The lower has been fishing very well on overcast calm days.; Midge hatches have been strong and the dry fly fishing has been very good in select areas along the river.; The dry fly fishing has only been good on the cloudy windless days.; If it is bright and sunny out you will have to change tactics and look to the deeper water where the fish feel more secure; Nymphing has been producing some larger fish than the dry fly activity, but we have been looking at indicators for a long time and it is a great change to see a fish eat on the surface.; Keep your nymphs on the smaller side, egg patterns and small midge larvae of mayfly imitations have been producing more than the larger sculpin and crayfish patterns.; Look for the streamer fishing to start to improve as well, the water temps are warming slightly with warmer nighttime temps and this will spur the larger fish into chasing down a bigger meal.; The lower has been fishing great, the wind has hampered the efforts a bit though; Get out and give it a try and don't forget to pick up a new fishing licensee for the year.;

Madison River - Upper - March 3rd, 2004
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Great
Stream Flow Information [click here]
The flows at Hebgen Dam are 888 C.F.S. The flows below the Westfork are around 975 C.F.S. The Upper river closed to fishing on Sunday so you will need to either fish the short section between Hebgen and Quake Lakes or stay on the section of river between McAttee Bridge and the Ennis Town Bridge. The Channels just upstream of 8 mile Ford have been fishing very well as of late with dead drifted sculpins and goldenstone nymphs. Some larger fish have been taken and if you are looking for some different fishing this has been a good bet lately. The fishing between the lakes is heating up and we should start to see some of the rainbows that live in Quake lake move into the river system to get ready for the spawning activity that takes place in a few months. There is a lot of snow in this area so be ready to do some post holing to get to the river.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: BH Pheasant Tail #12-16, Lightning Bug #12-16, Hares Ear Anatomay #14-16, BH Prince #10-12, Red Copper John #14-18, Egg Patterns #10, San Juan Worms #8, Red Midge Larvae #18-20, Olive Midge Larvae #18-20, Griffith's Gnats #16-18, Mother Shucker #18-20.
