McCloud Reservoir - March 12th, 2013
supplied by: SC Guide Service
RECORDED:

FISHING: Excellent
Spring is just around corner (Yreka and the outer lying areas) and with it comes more fishing options. Temperatures are hovering near freezing in the early mornings and into 50 to 60 degree range by late afternoon. Bass Lake, Lake Siskiyou, and McCloud Reservoir have been providing some outstanding Trout over the past couple of weeks. Sunday my son Conner and I caught and released McCloud Trout all afternoon using a variety of trolled offerings: K-7 Kwikfish, Rapalas, Seps Dodgers and spoons, worms and Woolly bugger flies. All our offerings were scented with Pro-Cure water soluble krill and shrimp oils. These oils put out a great scent trail and the Trout were hammering our bait versus nibbling. Conner and I had very few short bites where we had to work to set the hook, the Trout more often than not hooked themselves. Brown and Rainbow Trout size were in the 3/4 to 2 pounds class and putting up great battles on our ultra light Rogue rods (2-6lb.) and Pflueger reels spooled with 6lb. Yo-Zuri hybrid clear line.
The upper Klamath River is still kicking out some Winter Steelhead and Trout. As the river warms the stone flies will begin to move around providing another food source for hungry Summer Steelhead and Trout. The late spring early Summer Salmon fly hatch is a great time on the Klamath River providing may fly fishing as well as conventional fishing options.

FISHING: Excellent
Labor Day weekend provided a couple of excellent fishing trips. On Sunday, the Bob and Tom encore performance turned out to be outstanding Trout show. The guys boated 50 Rainbow Trout while trolling Seps dodgers with worm spinner trailers coated in ProCure shrimp/krill oil. The bite was hot in the morning landing 24 Trout in just 3 hours of fishing. The bite slowed a bit after that as we landed 26 more fish in 4 hours. The Trout size was good as most of the fish were in the 1 to 2 pound class. On Monday, Conner, Dad and I hit the upper Klamath River late in the afternoon to see what was going on, and within 30 seconds of Dad putting his hotshot worm combo out he had a nice Steelhead on. After a short battle, Dad landed a fat 3 plus pound Wild Steelhead. After that we landed a bunch of smaller 1/2 pound plus Trout in 2 hours of fishing. Salmon will start showing up any day now but in the mean time there are plenty of hungry Steely/Trout out there.

FISHING: Excellent
McCloud Reservoir aka the Trout factory was literally smoking hot yesterday. My clients and I arrived at McCloud early Saturday morning and found the weather conditions to be less than ideal. Unfortunately, the fires in the area have created a lot smoke and it was sitting like fog on the water, but it was nice and cool (40 degrees at 6am), making the smoke a little more easy to deal with. Despite the smoke, Team Ferguson hammered the Trout until we got off the water around 2 in the afternoon. Bob, Chris, Holly, and Kevin easily caught their limits and were excited to have 20 nice Trout for the smoker (HAHA no pun). Trolling Sep's dodgers with worm trailers, oiled up with ProCure's krill/shrimp produced steady Trout action; the team went maybe 10 minutes at the most between bites or hooking up. We ended the trip with 1 nice 2 pound Brown Trout (landed by Holly and taking big Trout title for the day) and 42 Rainbow Trout total. Not a bad day at all!!
***I have some open days before I start fishing the upper Klamath for Salmon and Steelhead, so check my Calendar page to see what is available.***

FISHING: Excellent
Fishing at McCloud remains as hot as the weather. Despite triple digit temperatures the Trout continue to bite throughout the day. My clients Bob an Tom of Alameda had a not stop bite, from the moment we put our lines in the water at 6:30am, until we quit around 1 pm. The majority of the Trout are Rainbows but we did land 5 Browns as well. The Trout are ranging in size from 1/2 pound to 21/2 pounds and are very healthy. They put up a great battle on my ultra light 6ft6 Rogue rods and Pflueger reels spooled with 6 pound Yo-Zuri hybrid line. Sep's dodgers with worm trailers, K-7 Kwikfish, and broken back Rapalas have been working really well for me. I have been using Pro-Cure Shrimp/Krill gel on everything I put in the water and I cannot complain with results!! I have some open days this month if you are looking for some great Trout action. FISHING: Excellent
The weather is hot and so is the fishing. The weather has been in the mid nineties for the last 10 days, but that has not affected the fishing at McCloud Reservoir or Trout Lake. Trout Lake in Montague has been kicking out a lot of Bass over the last couple of weeks. The last few times out have produced no less that 50 Bass and as many as 80. Four to six inch plastics worms have been producing the best bite but we have also picked up some Bass on top water Zara puppy spooks. The size of the Bass has been right around a pound but we have picked up some in the 2 to 4 pound class. On Wednesday, I fished McCloud Reservoir with my clients Dale and Adrienne Grissen of Hornbrook and had and a fantastic day landing a little over 50 Trout. Trout are all over the lake and limits are easy to get, every method from bait to flies will produce Trout. We trolled small crawdad, hotshot, and kwikfish plugs as well Seps dodgers with worm trailers from the Castle to the bridge. I have been starting my trips around 6am in the morning when the weather is cooler but the fish have been biting all day regardless of the heat. Fishing pressure is very light so if you are looking for some peace and quiet, amazing scenery, and excellent fishing give me call.

Local Fishing & Weather Report as of 7/10/2012
#1-McCloud Reservoir (McCloud) – Trout fishing is red hot right now. Trolling Sep’s dodgers with a fly/worm combo is deadly. My last few trips with clients and family have produced easy limits, while landing between 40 and 65 Trout per trip. The Trout are between the surface and 50 feet, browns are deeper near the bottom while the rainbows are in the top 25 feet. Yesterday, my clients and I got out on the water by 6:30am and had the reservoir practically all to ourselves nearly as well as consistent all day bite. The weather is outstanding warm sunny couldn’t ask for too much better!!
#2-Medicine Lake – Trout fishing is excellent at this little gem by boat or from the shore. Hungry brook and rainbow Trout can be had by casting lures or trolling slow and vertical jigging over marked fish.
#3-Klamath River (Hornbrook) - The Salmon fly hatch is over now but there are still hungry Steelhead and Trout waiting to be caught. The river is in excellent shape and hardly anyone is out fishing.
#4-Shasta Valley Wildlife Refuge (Montague) – Trout Lake is fishing well for Bass in the shallows. A plastic red flake worm in the 4 to 6 inch range is a good choice.
#5-Eagle Lake (Susanville) - Open and fishing checkout Eaglelake.net or Myoutdoorbuddy.com for the latest
#6 Lake Siskiyou- Easy limits can be had but get out early lots of camping traffic this time of year.
#7 Greenhorn Park (Yreka) - Bass and Trout are taking bait and lures, this is a fun little park for a family picnic.

FISHING: Excellent
McCloud Reservoir is the Winter Hot Spot for outstanding Trout fishing. Conner and I fished Friday and Saturday and landed over 80 Trout. We trolled lots of different set ups and they all caught Trout. On Friday, were trolled Seps dodgers (police car, hot pink blades) with Seps's grubs (white and watermelon, brown), spoons and worm trailers. On Saturday, we trolled floating broken back rapalas with nearly the same success. Fishing out towards the dam in the top 20 feet of the water column between speeds of .5 and 1.5 MPH in an S pattern was our key to steady action both days. The weather was outstanding and we practically had the entire lake to ourselves!!

FISHING: Excellent
Fishing at McCloud Reservoir is still red hot. After being away for 5 weeks fishing the Klamath River for Salmon, I had a scheduled trip to fish my clients Chuck and Marsha Colwell of Camarillo Ca at the reservoir. They were not disappointed with their first McCloud experience, landing 30 Rainbow Trout up to 2 pounds, while trolling Sep's kick dodgers with worm trailors. The Trout are holding in the the top 20 feet all over around the reservoir, with the best spots being in the main body channel. Surface temps around the lake are 43 to 49 degrees so trolling slow in an S pattern is key. If you are trolling faster than 1.5 mph you going to fast. Fishing close to shore in 30 to 60 feet of water and off the points were productive. McCloud fishes very well all through the winter but be advised to check to the weather reports once it begins to snow. The road to reservoir is only plowed to the base of the hill so access is cut off.

The Trout fishing could not have been much better. My guys Dave Dennis Rob and Tom caught Trout all day long. We trolled Seps dodgers and worms and landed 70 Trout in the 1/2 pound to 2 pound class. We had 34 fish by noon then took a little break and moved up near the river then found a huge school and proceeded to land another 36 before it was time to get off the water. Just an outstanding day all around constant action and great weather.

McCloud Reservoir - September 1st, 2011

FISHING: Excellent
Limiting out for Trout at McCloud Reservoir is easy pickings. Last trip, my clients and I fished from 4:30pm until dark, and we landed over 20 Trout. Many of the Rainbow Trout were in the 10 to 15 inch range, a few were pushing 20 inches. We did have one Trout that was easily over 20 inches hammer our offer as the sun went down, but as many big fish do when it saw the boat and net, it spit the hook. We landed all out Trout while trolling Sep's Strike king dodger with a worm trailer. Trolling slow (.5mph to 1.3mph) along the points and drops offs in 20 to 35 feet of water were the keys to getting bit.
***Salmon Season on the Klamath River (Below Irongate Reservoir east of I-5) will be starting in the coming weeks give me call 530 905 0758 to book a trip, I have days during the week and a couple of weekend days still available****
