Metolius River - May 8th, 2013
supplied by: John Judy Flyfishing
RECORDED:
70 °
FISHING: Fair
With the advent of warmer weather fishing is improving. There are often good hatches of smaller Mayflies in the early afternoon. The makeup of these hatches can vary quite a bit from day to day and week to week. The most dominate insects are gray Mayflies (Baetis) and cream ones (PMD). Definitely keep your eyes out for other options.
Also: Start looking for the first Green Drakes. There won’t be very many and they are not going to be consistent, still, if you get lucky and do see some Drakes a quick fly change will often net a fish or two. The Drake is a powerful attractor it doesn’t take many of them to draw the fishes attention.
Toward evening start looking for Caddis hatches. You’ll get the best result by fishing pupa patterns deep and then swinging them toward the surface at the end of the drift.
Bull Trout fishing remains good even though populations are not peaked. Fish available right now have held over in the river system through the winter. We won’t see fresh fish until late June or July. Even so both nymph patterns fished deep and streamer patters on the swing can be affective.

Metolius River - April 20th, 2013
supplied by: Camp Sherman Store
RECORDED:
52 °
FISHING: Good
The Met is beginning to see a noticeable increase in insect activity. Look for more intense dry-fly activity late morning to mid-to-late afternoon on sunny days. On in-climate days, start with nymphs and keep an eye out for sporadic hatches.
We’re still seeing hatches more associated with cooler weather: little black (and sometimes green) stones, blue-winged olives, October caddis, and an abundance of midges.
However, I have been seeing more and more hatches associated with spring: Cinygmulas (think red quills), and a March Brown here and there. Caddis are definitely around on warmer days. In fact, I identified five different species of caddis the other day.
Standard springtime nymphs include: golden stone and yellow sally, along with the larval form of the insects stated above.
Of course Bull Trout are available too. Some larger lake BT may still be lingering in the River as they slowly push back down the lake after over-wintering. Big, ugly, heavy streamers on 12 lb test leader with an 8 wt will insure you land that big boy and he is released unharmed!

Metolius River - April 11th, 2013
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
RECORDED:
54 °
FISHING: Good
Nymphing is the way to fly right now as the dry fly hatches have been very light with few fish looking up.
Golden or Black Stone nymphs with a dropper is the hot ticket.
Bull Trout fishing is fairly good with big streamers.

Metolius River - April 3rd, 2013

FISHING: Good
Pretty good afternoon hatches of BWO and Cinygmula mayflies. The Cinygmulas look like PMD's so most PMD patterns work well.
Nymphing with stonefly nymphs and cheeseburgers with a copper john dropper has been our best set up. Other great droppers include serendipities, sparkle pupas, fox's springtime pupa, stealth pheasant tail, beer head baetis and hares ears.
Streamers for Bull Trout are producing, we just got some SICK new streamers in to fish Bull's with.

Metolius River - March 28th, 2013
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
RECORDED:
56 °
FISHING: Good
There are now quite a few Cinygmula mayflies hatching for the season! This spring hatch is matched with most standard PMD patterns in a #14 or 16. Look for BWO and some March Browns too.
Nymphing with the basic stonefly and dropper is great. We've had good success with hares ears, PT's, serendipity, copper john and green drake nymphs.
Bull Trout are taking streamers well and we are picking up the odd BT on nymphs too.

Metolius River - March 15th, 2013

RECORDED:

FISHING: Fair
Decent activity on the river with BWO and caddis. We are expecting to see cinygmula hatches (your #14-16 PMD patterns match this perfectly) picking up from here on out to about May.
Stonefly nymphs are good with a small hares ear dropper. We also like copper johns, serendipities, prince, mr peacock, hunchback green drake nymphs and pheasant tails.
Bull Trout are pretty good too. They seem to be hitting big streamers and the nymphs too.

Metolius River - March 8th, 2013
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
RECORDED:
51 °
FISHING: Good
Bull Trout fishing is really good right now. A sculpzilla or olive zonker is a great bet along with all the standards like a white dolly llama.
The BWO hatches are pretty good. The spring hatch of cinygmula should begin anyday. There are some #14-16 olive caddis out and the october caddis continue to hatch. A few larger stones mixed in with some smaller stones, but really it would be rare to see fish actually key in to those this time of year.
Stick to the stonefly nymphs! Either black, golden or peacock stones are good choices and run a little dropper off. A #16-18-20 hares ear is a ood choice now. A tungsten bead CDC PT, copper john, red serendipity or a sparkle pupa would all be recommended as a dropper.

Metolius River - February 14th, 2013
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
RECORDED:

FISHING: Good
Good most days! That's the Metolius this time of year...
Mostly a nymph show at the moment. The triple bead Beldars Stone is the favorite, but a Green Drake Nymph or Oct Caddis Pupa are 2 other great nymphs to run for weight and they catch fish.
Run a dropper of a Blue Prince, Serendipity, Copper John, Lightning Bug, PT or BWO Nymphs.
I was out the other day and found one good spot for dries. They were looking up for a light BWO hatch. It is a day to day thing.
Bull Trout fishing is pretty good. The best bet is early AM and if they won't take a streamer try a Red Ice Cream Cone.

Metolius River - January 18th, 2013
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
RECORDED:

FISHING: Good
The river is so perfect right now. The Snow has receded to make access much easier and the roads are easy to navigate again.
Seems to me the best fishing is up around Allingham (remember it is CLOSED above the bridge) down to Gorge CG. I've had some friends doing well for Bull Trout around the Powerline Hole and one guy caught a really nice brown there last Sunday.
We've seen some good hatches of BWO, and quite a few little black winter stones as well as a bigger stone too. There have been good hatches of October Caddis and Silver Stripe Sedges on the warmer days.
Bull Trout Fishing has been good. The fish are on streamers for sure, but if you spot one that won't respond to your streamer throw a red ice cream cone at him. Chances are good he will eat it on a good dead drift.

Metolius River - January 10th, 2013
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
RECORDED:
28 °
FISHING: Good
My friends did really well here Sunday on little red nymphs below the hatchery. The best pattern was a red copper john but the serendipity was good too.
We went on Monday in the rain on lunch hour and got nothin' so that is how winter fishing goes on the Met! Monday there were lot's of baetis hatching but I saw nothing looking up at the Dolly Hole. I tried to get the eddy but someone was in it and it looked like there were fish poking up there during the hatch.
