Metolius River - July 29th, 2008
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters
FISHING: Good
Golden stoneflies are hatching on the Metolius.  The river above the Gorge is the place to catch this hatch in full swing.  Clarks Stones, Norm Woods, and Rogue Stones are all a good bet, especially when teamed up with your favorite beadhead as a dropper.  The resident bull trout do not get a whole lot of pressure this time of year and they have been more than willing to come out and chase down some monster streamers.

FISHING: Good
Look for golden stoneflies upstream of the Gorge.  Clarks Stones are a great pattern for this river, but are even better if you hang a small dropper nymph off the back.  Trout are holding tight to the riverbank waiting for these big morsels to fall in.  Evening fishing this time of year on the Met can be excellent.

FISHING: Good
The green drake hatch is just about over.  Golden stoneflies are starting their hatch cycle.  A Clarks Stone with a small dropper is an effective way to fish this hatch on the upper, shallower sections of the Metolius.

FISHING: Great
Very positive reports keep rolling in from the Metolius.  Green drakes remain the go-to dry fly.  The usually wary trout of the Metolius become suckers for the big green mayflies.  Low riding patterns like cripples and emergers will account for most fish.  Golden stonefly nymphs are getting active as they prepare for their hatch cycle.  Nymphing near the bottom with golden stone imitations can be very effective this time of year.

FISHING: Good
It is green drake time on the Metolius.  Trout are keyed on these big mayflies and the fishing has been very good.  Green drakes usually hatch mid to late afternoon and offer anglers a shot at catching some of the rivers bigger rainbows on dry flies.  Low riding cripples and emerger style flies will often out produce higher riding, heavily hackled flies on this spring creek.  Pre-hatch nymphing with a green drake-imitating nymph trailed by a smaller mayfly nymph or caddis pupa should be very effective.

This spring fed river stays around 47-52 degrees year round and it fishes like a spring creek!  Averaging 1-3 fish an hour is the norm.  Have patience... it takes quality time on the water to get a feel for this river's complex character.  Patience will eventually lead to fishing success.  This is a stalking trout stream, casting from your knees and from behind bushes to hide yourself from fish will help out--alot.  Wading often spooks fish, so take your time.   If you can hit the spot without getting in the river, you are already ahead of the game.

The Met is in fine shape and we are seeing consistant hatches of Green Drakes, PMDs, Caddis, Yellow & Green Sallies, and some lingering BWOs and midges.

Summer Bull Trout fishing is often slower than other times of the year but still a good option.

Bull trout, Bull trout, Bull trout!

Yes this is a difficult river to catch fish in, but Bull trout are often stupid (I mean that in a very fond way).  They will eat nearly anything you put in front of them, as long as you know where they like to hang out.   Our favorite flies are big, big, heavy, streamers.  We throw flies that look like whitefish, good sized whitefish.  As you fish these big, nasty bugs, make them look like an injured fish.  This will often invoke a strike.

If streamers don't get your goat, or aren't working, try nymphing.  A big stone fly is needed to get your flies down (since there is no split shot allowed).  A small may fly nymph will usually do the trick.  Our favorite droppers are red, and sized 14-18.
The Blue winged olive hatches are building.  As the days grow longer and warmer, look for Rainbows and Browns to be feeding on the surface during the that 10-2pm prime time.   Blue winged olives and midges are your most consistant hatches this time of year with some caddis and even the occasional PMD.  Though many fish may be rising, they are usually picky.  Down stream presentations with emergers and cripples produced the best.  Oh yeah, 6X was a must.  We found most of our feeding fish up stream of Wizard Falls hatchery.

The key to fishing the Metolius in spring is timing.  If the weather is sunny and stable, the Metolius can have prolific BWO and midge hatches and fish will rise to well presented dry flies.  I have been seeing PMDs and caddis too.  If it is wintery, cloudy and cold, the fish can get sulky so you will have to nymph to get a shot at a beautiful native redside.   The majority of the huge Bull Trout from Lake Billy Chinook have moved back down to the lake but the resident Bulls are always available.  Often these carnivorous char are easy to spot in deep pools and tailouts.
