Missouri River - January 9th, 2012
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:
35 °
FISHING: Great
What do you know.....things remain the same - windy, warm, and dry. There's a little hope on the winter horizon. Air temperatures appear to be cooling down somewhat. Perhaps the earth has tilted enough to start giving us some moisture. We'll see temperatures in the 30's to low 40's for several days. There's a hint of moisture in the air starting Tuesday. When will Montana show here extreme charm?
For now, enjoy the fishing. Despite the 35° water temperature, reports from the river have been very good. Anything pink, black midge larvae, slow moving streamers and the occassional midge dry on warmer afternoons all produce. The only complaint - the wind. It never stops. The Dam to Wolf Creek Bridge seems to be the hot spot; at least the walleye guys think so. Enjoy!
What will summer bring? Nothing but goodness. Booked yet?

Missouri River - January 5th, 2012

RECORDED:
56 °
FISHING: Great
W.I.N.D. continues at a brisk pace. Along with the wind, you'll find very mild temperatures - especially for January. At 11:00 pm, its 56°. Without the wind, you'll find the fishing to be excellent. It's warm enough where you'll find fish on top eating midges. They'll still eat streams, so why throw nymphs. The walleye guys are busy at the dam. They don't look like fly fishermen.
It looks like we'll see more "normal" weather starting next week. For now, enjoy the t-shirt weather. While we'd like to see a lower water year than we've had over the last couple of years, it would be nicer to see some snow. It's brown and dry out there.

FISHING: Excellent
O.K., so it's been a long time since I've updated one of these. I fell into a little bit of the fall burnout, and found some pretty cool fishing that I wasn't ready to put out there.
Last October, I spent several days on the Missouri in Eastern Montana targeting big fish. I want to say a big "thanks" to Matt Lindley, Brian Bross, Jay Hanson, Paul Kanning, and Scott Kanning for the indelible memories. We didn't catch amazing numbers of fish, but had a great time, and caught some very memorable ones.
Tactics were pretty simple...dead drifting streamers. Did a lot of wade fishing, and sight fishing.
That's all I'm going to say about it, but felt like I owed it to them to report something.
Tight Lines!

Missouri River - January 2nd, 2012

FISHING: Great
New Year’s Day weather cooperated quite well. Lots of fish were being landed by all. All the bends were full of anglers. The weather has been a little windy but it’s pretty hard to complain about an above freezing day the first of January in central Montana. Swung streamers in slow moving water produced quite a few fish early on in the day (pre-lunch time). In the afternoon, we mostly reverted to the nymphing game. If motivation would have set in, there were quite a few fish feeding on sub surface midges and a few on top as well but there were def. enough fins seen to attempt the dry fly. A still day would make it very motivating. Nymphing worked well. Anything pink or orange was producing. Spring Creek Scud, DLH, Soft Hackle Ray’sand pretty much the entire selection from The Good, the Pink, and the Firebead. Fred did well swinging some sparse white colored bunny streamers as well. The weather is still good, and now that’s it’s now New Year’s Day and most are back to work the river is wide open. The Bloch is north of Holter today and we should hear a good report on that tomorrow., Firebeads, T.C.’s,

Missouri River - December 29th, 2011

FISHING: Excellent
12/30/11
In mid December I received an email from my friend Dale Smith in Colorado wondering if I had any guide openings on the 26th or 27th of December. I giggled a little and checked my calendar. Sure enough I was open either day. After going back and forth on which day to fish we decided the wind was going to blow less on the 27th. We met in Craig and sure enough the wind was only gusting to 25mph. Not too bad considering what I am listening to as I type. I launched the RO I strapped on a #18 Fire bead Sow bug with a Zebra dropper and a fire bead Ray Charles with some other orange headed creature for a dropper. The weather was unseasonably warm and the wind was letting us play. I rowed to the wire(without gloves on) and quickly realized I am out of shape. Within a few casts Kyle boated a nice Bow. The takes right now are very subtle so the anglers sharpened there senses and after a bit proceeded to put a pile of nice fish in the boat. Slow, inside water was the key to our success. We switched gears at the Bull Pasture and tied on streamers. I suggested a slow tight retrieve and sure enough it worked. We finished the day with several nice steamer fish and a few we would have liked to inspect a bit closer. The bugger of the day was a white Marabou Clouser fished painfully slow. What a great day to wrap up the year! Thanks to Dale and Kyle for braving the weather and making it a great day.
See you out there!
Brian

Missouri River - December 27th, 2011

FISHING: Excellent
Pretty tough to beat fishin on the Mo right now. Fished with Tristen yesterday up high and put around 2 doz in the boat and lost a handful of others. Granted most of the fish being caught up higher are planter fish that came through Holter this year, but they're still fun to catch. We did land some really nice, clean river fish too. Talked to a guy who was fishing for walleye at the launch and he was getting frustrated catching bow's every cast (I tried to let him know thats not a bad thing for this time of year, but he thought I was crazy). The fish are pretty stacked up together right now, so if you catch one anchor up and run a few more drifts through the hole. Nymphs are pretty hard to beat, but fish are also hammerin streamers in froggy water. Go get it while the weather cooperates.
Flies de jour: grey and tan rays, anything with a firebead on it, sows in tan and pink, scuds of all colors, egg sucking leeches, smaller muted buggers.

FISHING: Great
Our rating would be excellent if it wasn't for the persistent and heavy wind. As Captain Kirk says, "Why fish nymphs when you can get them on streamers?" He got 30 yesterday.
If you have some days off, enjoy the river. It's really good for this time of year. Where's the snow? High temperatures will reach near 50° this week.

Missouri River - December 18th, 2011

FISHING: Good
Fished the Missouri below Holter yesterday. Everyone in Bull Pasture was hooked up consistently. We floated and caught a few on firebead and sowbug patterns but the guys nymphing stationary on the slower "winter" runs were getting a lot more fish. We did have the most success on the smaller sized firebead soft hackle ray in pink. Short days makes being out there at the peak of the day seemingly the most productive... if the wind would die down a bit today it would make it a fun day on the Mo.

From FWP:
In May in the Craig section, the brown trout estimate of >10 inch fish was 537 per mile. The 30 year mean is 562 per mile. We sampled 41 walleye and 13 burbot.
In October in the Craig section, the rainbow trout estimate of >10 inch fish was 6,034 (SD 194) per mile, which is the highest on record. The 30 year mean is 3,036. We sampled 169 walleye and 120 burbot in the Craig section.
In May in the Cascade section, the estimate of >10 inch fish was 909 per mile. The 28 year mean is 378. We sampled 2 walleye and 14 burbot.
In October in the Cascade section, the estimate of > 10 inch fish was 2,161 (SD 82) per mile. The 28 year mean is 1,506. We sampled 37 walleye and 33 burbot in the Cascade section. The largest walleye was 13.95 pounds and 32.5 inches long.
The most striking feature on the Missouri River in 2011 was the rainbow trout estimate in the Craig section. We sampled the highest number of rainbow trout (5,583) over the 30 year period of record. Normally we sample a small number (~20) of rainbow trout of hatchery origin that spill over Holter Dam, but in 2011 20.2% (1,130) of the fish we sampled were of hatchery origin. We were able to calculate an estimate of hatchery fish which was 1,605 (SD 240) per mile. On this basis, the actual number of wild fish in the 2011 estimate was 4,429, which is the second highest on record. The high number of wild fish was not entirely unexpected. In the past few years we observed higher numbers of 8 and 9 inch rainbow trout suggesting a possible increase in the adult population. The results of 2011 confirm these fish successfully recruited into the adult population.
