Try stripping bugger on the mud seam and hang on!! Also, above the mud, top water fishing has been great with Baetis. The Prickly Pear is still dumping a little but the river clears as you get closer to Craig.

Fishing Report: The Missouri is fishing very well and is our best bet for finding clear water and happy trout. Spring Runoff is not affecting the Mo much anymore and the Dearborn and Little Prickly Pear have cleared and made the river fishable most of the way downstream. There have been some hatches of Baetis and Midges but they have been in isolated areas and you will just have to be fortunate enough to run into a pod of risers. Nymphing has been great during non hatch periods. The usual small tailwater nymphs have been the ticket. Trail the smaller nymphs behind a Scud of San Juan worm. The river will probably be a little busy over the weekend but there is a lot of water for everyone to enjoy.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: BWO Thorax #18-22, BWO Parachute #18-22, Parachute Adams #16-20, Lightning Bug #16-18, Soft Hackle Sow Bug #14-16, BH Pheasant Tail #14-18, Olive Anatomay #16-18, Wire Wonder #16-18, Brown Bugger #4-6, JJ Special #2-4, Clouser Crayfish #4-6, Bunny Crayfish #4-6.

Missouri River

The Mighty Mo is flowing at 3510 C.F.S. Last week a storm came through the area and dropped a ton of moisture on the area. Little Prickley Pear Creek and the Dearborn river both were above flood stage and made the mainstem of the Missouri dirty and unfishable. Both creeks have dropped but are still running above average flows. The only fishable water we had last week was the short stretch between Holter Dam and the Wolf Creek bridge. The river should be clearing below Little Prickley Pear which will help with the crowding on the river. The river will still be unfishable below the confluence of the Dearborn. There have been some baetis and midges hatching but most of the fishing has been below the surface.

Fly Pattern Suggestions: BWO Thorax #18-22, BWO Parachute #18-22, Parachute Adams #16-20, Lightning Bug #16-18, Soft Hackle Sow Bug #14-16, BH Pheasant Tail #14-18, Olive Anatomay #16-18, Wire Wonder #16-18, Brown Bugger #4-6, JJ Special #2-4, Clouser Crayfish #4-6, Bunny Crayfish #4-6.

REPORTS: Looks like it could be another bad day for the wind. The river's still fishing well even with Prickly Pear running off color, but if the wind gets ugly, it'll kill ya. The Prickly Pear junk clears up pretty well about 1/2 way to Craig. The Dearborn is mucking things up pretty well at its confluence but there's good fishing to be had in the off color water if you've got a few tricks up your sleeve. Lots of baetis have the fish up and looking and the standard Missouri tandem nymph rigs are once again producing well. Pink has been key subsurface but stuff with flash like lighting bugs etc... have also been working well. Buggers close to the banks (even below the Dearborn) continue to fool the fatties.

The Mighty Mo is flowing at 3510 at Holter Dam.  The Missouri has been an interesting place to follow over the past couple of days.  They recieved a huge amount of rain during the middle of the week and the Dearborn and Little Prickley Pear Creek were flowing way out of there banks.  The Dearborn which typically flows around 500 C.F.S. this time of year was over 4000 C.F.S. and Little Prickley Pear which flows a couple of hundred C.F.S. was almost at 2000 C.F.S.  These two creeks were adding a tremendous amount of dirty water into the Mo and the only good area to fish was between the Wolf Creek bridge and the dam.  This is a short piece of water and really packed the anglers all into one spot.  Both tributaries have dropped their flows a lot but the fishing conditions will most likely still be a little tough below Wolf Creek this weekend.

REPORTS: Even with all the rain that's happening over on the Mo, the fishing's still been pretty good. The Dearborn continues to pump junk and the water clarity's suffering due to all the rain, but the fish are up and looking on the soft insides. The rises are EXTREMELY subtle and most of the fish are eating emergers about 3" below the surface. Many times it'll look like a water movement out of place and that's it. The good news is that they're not being selective. A good drift over any of these fish (even the ones eating emergers) will bring them to your dry. Cripples parachute adams, etc... all in about a size 14 to 18. The streamer fishing has been solid but not great and the nymphing has been run to run.

REPORTS: The last couple of days it's been streamer city. The baetis have been coming off, but not like they had been and the fish have been less impressed by the hatch. The weather for today is calling for clouds and a high of 48. Look for fewer fish to the baetis and lots of fish to the streamers . . . some fatties too. Smaller brown, or olive junk as well as larger yellow stuff has been the best for us recently. Another good thing is that crowding has been minimal over here recently. Nice to have the water pretty much to yourself! As always (or almost always) the tandem nymph rigs have been their old, reliable selves! Olive, pink and gray scuds, lightning bugs, rs2s . . . you know, the usual suspects!

HATCHES: midges, capnias, baetis. . . baetis . . . baetis . . . did we say baetis?

FLIES: brown buggers (ideally with gold dumbell eyes) Pt's, Lightening bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc...

WEATHER: Today: Mostly cloudy. Northeast wind 9 mph. High 48. Tonight: Partly cloudy. East wind 7 mph. Low 20. Monday: Partly cloudy. Northeast wind 7 mph. High 56. Monday Night: Mostly cloudy. Southeast wind 5 mph. Low 32. Tuesday: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of rain. Probability of measurable precipitation 20 percent. High 63.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Today's flow on the Smith below Eagle Creek is at 255 cfs. Bring your girdle bugs and San Juans!

REPORTS: Nice to have some cloud cover back in the picture today. Look for more of those blanket baetis hatches with your biggest problem being differentiating your bug from the naturals! The baetis hatches on the Mo have been very good lately. While they're calling for some wind today, it should remain on the managable side and not be an issue for your topwater prospects. On particularly snotty pods, small soft hackles just under the surface continue to be a trick they can't resist. Keeping these flies JUST under the surface has been the key . . . .like 3 to 5 inches under the surface. Sometimes 6X is a necessity. Streamers should be effective in the shallower riffles and banks that aren't so good in the bright sun.

HATCHES: midges, capnias, baetis. . . baetis . . . baetis . . . did we say baetis?

FLIES: brown buggers (ideally with gold dumbell eyes) Pt's, Lightening bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc...

WEATHER: Today: Mostly cloudy. North wind 15 mph. High 59. Tonight: Scattered rain showers then numerous snow showers. Snow accumulation 1 inch. Probability of measurable precipitation 60 percent. North wind 12 mph. Low 27. Wednesday: Numerous snow showers. Probability of measurable precipitation 60 percent. Northeast wind 7 mph. High 40. Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy. Scattered snow showers. Probability of measurable precipitation 30 percent. North wind 10 mph. Low 19. Thursday: Cloudy. Slight chance of snow. Probability of measurable precipitation 20 percent. High 41.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Today's flow on the Smith below Eagle Creek is up just a bit to 346.

REPORTS: Same deal as yesterday really. Blanket hatches of baetis should keep you and the fish busy on the Mo today. The bugs have been there in spades and the fish have been looking for 'em. The warmer daytime highs today combined with the cloud cover and lack of serious wind should be picture perfect! Dryflies that include midges and duns in sizes 12 to 20 will be effective on the pods of risers you'll see. Tan Quigly cripples along with SHALLOW palemino droppers continue to be a VERY deadly combo for choosy fish. The streamer fishing has become much more consistent again here in the last week or so. The flow below Holter is 3350 with a water temp of 42.

HATCHES: midges, capnias, baetis. . . baetis . . . baetis . . . did we say baetis?

FLIES: brown buggers (ideally with gold dumbell eyes) Pt's, Lightening bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc...

WEATHER: Today: Partly cloudy. Warmer. Highs 55 to 65. ..45 to 55 in the mountains. Southeast winds 5 to 10 mph. Tonight: Partly cloudy. Lows 30 to 35. South winds 5 to 10 mph. Saturday: Partly cloudy. Highs 65 to 70. ..50 to 60 in the mountains. Southeast winds 5 to 10 mph. Saturday night: Partly cloudy. Lows in the mid 30s to lower 40s. Southeast winds 5 to 15 mph. Sunday: Partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain showers. Highs in the 60s to lower 70s. East winds 5 to 15 mph.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Today's flow on the Smith below Eagle Creek is 203, down from 224 this time yesterday morning.

The Mighty Mo is flowing at 3080 C.F.S.  The Mo has been fishing well over the past couple of weeks and we have been getting some good reports of surface activity.  Midges and Baetis are the main stay for the hatch activity below Holter lake.  The nymphing as usual will produce some good results when there is nothing taking place on the surface.  The new hot spot on the Mo lately has been above Holter and below Hauser.  The Beaver Creek area has become popular lately because of the fish that are moving out of Holter Lake and using the river for spawing.  It has been crowded in this section but there are some very large fish being caught.  There is not a lot of great holes in this stretch but if you get in one of the good spots you can catch some very nice rainbows.
