Missouri River - April 7th, 2005
supplied by: The Kingfisher
FISHING: Good
River Levels [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
REPORTS: Should be good stuff on the Mo today. Partly cloudy skies and not too much wind will make for good fishing with a variety of tactics. Look for good hatches of baetis, midges and fish up and eating 'em in shaded coves and during periods of cloud cover. Smaller p-tails, brassies, lightning bugs, etc. about 8" below some type of indicator dry should get you bent. Brown or olive crystal buggers have been deadly in the slackwater pockets. If you have pods of actively rising fish, size 16 cripples or even a 14 griffith's gnat should work just fine for you. Look for some skwala activity to begin to be a factor on some of the lower floats in the near future.. . like today.
HATCHES: midges, capnias, baetis.
FLIES: brown buggers (ideally with gold dumbell eyes) Pt's, Lightening bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc...
WEATHER: Today: Mostly sunny in the morning then becoming partly cloudy. Highs 70 to 75. Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph. Tonight: Partly cloudy in the evening then becoming mostly cloudy. A 20 percent chance of showers. In the mountains...slight chance of showers in the evening...then chance of rain and snow showers after midnight. Lows 30 to 35. West winds 10 to 20 mph. Gusts up to 30 mph early in the evening. Friday: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of showers in the morning...then slight chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. In the mountains...slight chance of rain and snow showers in the morning...then chance of rain and snow showers and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs 55 to 60. West winds 10 to 15 mph. Friday night: Mostly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Lows 30 to 35. West winds 5 to 10 mph. Saturday: Partly cloudy with a chance of rain and snow. Highs around 50. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation 30 percent.

Missouri River - April 1st, 2005
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Fair
Stream Flow Information [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
The Mighty Mo is flowing at 3080 C.F.S. Just like the Yellowstone the wind has been creating unfishable conditions. There has been some sporadic hatches of both Blue Winged Olives and Midges when the wind doesn't blow them to North Dakota. Nymphing has been fair to midland with the usual suspects producing most of the fish. Pink Scuds, sow bugs and midge larvae are accounting for many of the fish caught below the surface. If you are taking a boat and are going to float don't be shy about giving streamers a try when you are moving from one spot to the next.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: BWO Thorax #18-22, BWO Parachute #18-22, Parachute Adams #16-20, Lightning Bug #16-18, Soft Hackle Sow Bug #14-16, BH Pheasant Tail #14-18, Olive Anatomay #16-18, Wire Wonder #16-18, Brown Bugger #4-6, JJ Special #2-4, Clouser Crayfish #4-6, Bunny Crayfish #4-6.

REPORTS: Very warm but very windy looks like the line-up for today. With gusting blasts up to 45 mph, you could have your work cut out for you on the Mo today. The streamer action continues to be good throughout the river and might be your best shot at defeating the wind. Even tandem nymph rigs'll get blown back upstream in 30+ mile and hour wind. Streamers 1/4erd upstream with the tip of your rod held in the water during the drift will give you your best shot at producing the type of action you'd be getting if it weren't windy. In the last couple of days, brown has become the color of choice for the streamers once again. Today's flow below Holter is 2930 cfs, the same as yesterday.
HATCHES: midges, capnias, baetis.
FLIES: brown buggers (ideally with gold dumbell eyes) Pt's, Lightening bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc...
WEATHER: Today: Mostly cloudy. Windy. Highs 60 to 65. ..45 to 50 in the mountains. Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 45 mph. Tonight: Mostly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of snow. Windy. Lows 30 to 35. West winds 15 to 25 mph. Saturday: Partly cloudy. Highs 50 to 55. ..40 to 45 in the mountains. West winds 10 to 20 mph. Saturday night: Partly cloudy. Lows 30 to 35. Southwest winds 5 to 15 mph. Sunday: Mostly cloudy with scattered mountain snow showers during the morning then isolated showers and thunderstorms. Highs 50 to 55. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation 40 percent.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Stop in and check out the new Deep Wading Jacket by Patagonia. Very light yet heavy duty, packable rain jacket for $200

FISHING: Fair
River Levels [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
REPORTS: Look for the traditional Mo patterns to be your bread and butter under these conditions calm but cold conditions. This should include pink junk like scuds and Ray Charles. Tiny mayfly nymhps like p-tails and lightning bugs etc... If things warm up just a bit and there is actually some calm time on this river, look for fish to start looking up for midges. Small midge emergers tied SHALLOW beneath a larger attractor pattern are very effective on these fish as are CDC and other low riding cluster patterns. A red palemino 6" to 8" under a small royal Wulff is an evil combination. Today's flow below Holter is 3060 cfs with a water temp of 38 degrees.
HATCHES: midges, capnias.
FLIES: Pt's, Lightening bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc...

FISHING: Good
River Levels [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
REPORTS: The warmer weather and somewhat calm days have made for some great topwater midge fishing at times. Looks like more of the same today with no wind and 60 degree highs. When the fish aren't up a pink lightening bug or egg pattern will get it done. This is always a great option this time of year in spite of the re-emerging gophers which can be particularly aggressive in the cooler weather and will often swim out in groups in often times successful attempts to swamp boats and kill the occupants. Today's flow below Holter is 3030 cfs with a water temp of 38 degrees. HATCHES: midges, surly gophers. FLIES: Pt's, Lightening bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc... WEATHER: Today: Partly cloudy. Northwest wind 6 mph. High 60. Tonight: Partly cloudy. West wind 12 mph. Low 31. Friday: Mostly cloudy. West wind 18 mph. High 67. Friday Night: Chance of rain then mixed rain and snow. Probability of measurable precipitation 80 percent. West wind 18 mph. Low 34. Saturday: Mostly cloudy. Chance of mixed rain and snow then chance of rain. Probability of measurable precipitation 40 percent. High 42. Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of snow. Probability of measurable precipitation 20 percent. Low 19. Sunday: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of snow showers. Probability of measurable precipitation 20 percent. High 39. Missouri River - January 28th, 2005
supplied by: Yellowstone Angler
FISHING: Fair
Although winter is here, you almost wouldn't know it the last two weeks. We have been experiencing a mid-winter warm up that has expanded the area's fishing opportunities. It is worth getting out on these warmer days, which probably won't stay around very long. If you are going to get out, look for cloudy calm days, which will present the best opportunities. This time of year usually calls for fishing deeper holes with big ugly nymphs and streamers.
Be especially carefull when wading this time of year. In some spots, ice will form under the surface and can make slippery rocks, ridiculously slippery. Along with this, the water is very cold and a fall could be life threatening.
On the spring creeks, there is limited dry fly fishing on warmer days when some midges are hatching and a few fish are looking up. See below for more specifics..
The Missouri, with it's tailwater characteristics, often provides consistant fishing opportunities throughout the winter. Look for midge hatches on calm, cloudy winter days. Otherwise, plan on nymphing with the standard mid-winter patterns.
The Bighorn is very similar to the Missouri this time of year. Since it comes out of a bottom release reservoir, the water temperatures are warmer during the winter, compared to freestones like the Yellowstone. This provides decent fishing on days that are warm enough to be out trying to catch a fish
