Missouri River - January 4th, 2005

FISHING: Fair
Winter is here.   The browns have already finished their spawning in the river.  It is still worth getting out on the days that are warm enough, although there may not be many of those for the next few months.  If you are going to get out, look for cloudy calm days, which will present the best opportunities.  This time of year usually calls for fishing deeper holes with big ugly nymphs and streamers.  Be especially carefull when wading this time of year.  In some spots, ice will form under the surface and can make slippery rocks, ridiculously slippery.  Along with this, the water is very cold and a fall could be life threatening.

On the spring creeks, there is limited dry fly fishing on warmer days when some midges are hatching and a few fish are looking up.  See below for more specifics..

The Missouri, with it's tailwater characteristics, often provides consistant fishing opportunities throughout the winter.  Look for midge hatches on calm, cloudy winter days.  Otherwise, plan on nymphing with the standard mid-winter patterns.

The Bighorn is very similar to the Missouri this time of year.  Since it comes out of a bottom release reservoir, the water temperatures are warmer during the winter, compared to freestones like the Yellowstone.  This provides decent fishing on days that are warm enough to be out trying to catch a fish.

Missouri River The Missouri, with it's tailwater characteristics, often provides consistant fishing opportunities throughout the winter.  Look for midge hatches on calm, cloudy winter days.  Otherwise, plan on nymphing with the standard mid-winter patterns.

A good bet is fishing a double nymph rig under and indicator.  Try a soft hackle sow bug and a brassie or any combination of scuds, sow bugs, midge larvae and pheasant tails.

REPORTS: Wind has been the issue lately. A BIG issue on some days!! Even then, though, there continue to be isolated pods of ultra picky fish rising. While you may need a motor just to get downstream, the fishing should be good. The lower floats have had lots of fish rising on the less windy days. A wide variety of midge patterns on 12' 6X leader will get it done for you. The most effective poison for these fish, though, are smaller tandem nymphs swung just subsurface through these pods. The tandem nymph rigs fished deep in the waist to chest deep "slicks" have also been very consistent. Stick with the pink scuds, lighting bugs, etc... and hang on. It's been deadly. If you can get a reasonably calm day, the Mo will treat you right!

HATCHES: midges.

FLIES: Subsurface it'll be the standard Mo junk like Ray Charles, eggs, size 16 to 20 flashback p-tails, lightning bugs, RS2's, red San Juan worms, pink and grey scuds (pinks in 16s and 18s and greys all the way up to a #12). For the dries, try size 18 olive or brown colored cripples and parachute Adams, Griffith's gnats in 14 to 18, button emergers in 16s to 20s.

WEATHER: Today: Partly cloudy. Highs 30 to 40. ..15 to 25 in the mountains. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Tonight: Mostly cloudy in the evening then becoming partly cloudy. Lows 15 to 20. Southwest winds 5 to 15 mph. Tuesday: Mostly cloudy. A 20 percent chance of snow in the mountains. Windy. Highs 40 to 45. ..30 to 35 in the mountains. Highs 40 to 50. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Wednesday night through Friday night: Partly cloudy. Windy. Highs in the 40s to lower 50s. Lows in the mid 20s to lower 30s. Saturday: Partly cloudy. Highs in the 30s to mid 40s.

Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]

The Mighty Mo is flowing at 3530 C.F.S.  There are many faces of the Missouri this time of year.  The area below Holter dam has been fishing well with nymphs such as pink scuds, baetis nymphs and soft hackle sow bugs.  There have been some sporadic baetis hatches still and you can find some pods of fish still on the surface.  Fishing streamers in the shallow areas has been producing a few browns as well.   Above Holter the Kokanne Salmon have been spawning and the rainbows have moved up to feed on the decaying fish as well as their eggs.  The fishing has been good with nymphs in this area and there have been some large fish caught over the past couple of weeks.   Above Canyon Ferry there are a few brown trout being caught on large streamers fished in the deep holes.  The section below Toston Dam is historically an area where some large brown trout get caught in the fall.  It is kind of a crap shoot in this area but you can catch a very large fish in this area if you are willing to put in the time.

REPORTS: It's a wind thing pure and simple. If the wind does behave, the Mo should fish very well on the surface. Lots of baetis! Fish the small stuff both on the surface and below. Keeping your flies VERY shallow under a white indicator (lots of these fish are WAY WAY WAY indicator shy at this point) over rising fish is a deadly tactic for the Mo. Streamers have been very good, especially on windy days. The colors of choice have been olive, dark brown and white. The days when the wind has stayed managable, the Mo has been giving up some silly good dryfly action mid afternoon.

HATCHES: baetis, midges.

For the dries, try comparaduns in 14s and 20s, size 18 olive or brown colored cripples and parachute Adams, Griffith's gnats in 14 to 18, button emergers in 16s to 20s.

WEATHER: Today: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of snow showers then slight chance of rain showers. Probability of measurable precipitation 20 percent. West wind 17 mph. High 43. Tonight: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of rain showers then slight chance of snow showers. Probability of measurable precipitation 20 percent. West wind 18 mph. Low 27. Monday: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of rain showers. Probability of measurable precipitation 20 percent. Southwest wind 30 mph. High 44.

REPORTS: It should be fairly "warm" again today with lots of cloud cover and not much wind. This'd be good since wind has been the big issue recently. If the wind does behave, the Mo should give it up in spades. Lots of baetis! Fish the small stuff both on the surface and below. Keeping your flies VERY shallow under a white indicator (lots of these fish are WAY WAY WAY indicator shy at this point) over rising fish is a deadly tactic for the Mo. Slinging junk like sculpins and crawdads is a little less subtle but equally effective this time of year.

HATCHES: baetis, mahoganies, midges.

For the dries, try comparaduns in 14s and 16s, size 18 olive or brown colored cripples and parachute Adams, Griffith's gnats in 14 to 18, button emergers in 16s to 20s.

WEATHER: Tonight: Mostly cloudy. Lows 25 to 35. Southwest winds around 10 mph. Thursday: Mostly cloudy with a slight chance of rain. Highs 45 to 50. ..35 to 40 in the mountains. Southwest winds around 5 mph shifting to the northwest 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Thursday night: Mostly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of rain and snow. Lows 25 to 35. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Friday: Mostly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain and snow showers. Highs 40 to 50. West winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph

REPORTS: With heavy cloud cover and lack of any real wind to speak of through the weekend, you have the potential for some VERY good fishing on The Mo again today. We've had some killer days over here recently. The baetis have been getting stronger lately and the clouds will go a long way to getting the fish up and eating 'em. If you get onto snotty pods, just drop a #20 emerger pattern under an indicator or big dryfly about 5 to 10" and see what happens. We already know what'll happen! If the wind does pick up, the standard miniscule double nymph rigs deep, right off the bottom will get you hooked up. Slow moving streamers along the bank troughs and creek inlets can produce some scary fish this time of the year.

HATCHES: baetis, mahoganies, midges.

REPORTS: Looks like we're moving into full on fall mode on the Mo. With a high of only 37 today, you'd better be planning on fishing the small stuff or the big ugly streamers. Terrestrials of all kinds as well as the bigger mayflies will all but disappear in the cold weather. The baetis have been getting stronger lately and the clouds will go a long way to getting the fish up and eating 'em. There have been some SILLY good baetis days on the Mo lately! REPORTS: Today is supposed to be partly cloudy with light wind. If that forecast holds true today, you should have some great topwater fishing on all sections of the Mo. Shallow water casts and backwater swirlies with fine tippets will be the name of the game if the fish start looking up. If the wind picks up, the standard miniscule double nymph rigs will get you hooked up. Don't overlook streamers tight to the banks! We've been racking up some HOGS at the usual fall brown trout lies.
