Missouri River - November 6th, 2010
supplied by: Big R Fly Shop
RECORDED:    64 °   FISHING: Excellent

Yesterday was windy but if you are willing to fish below the surface, and don't mind scraping weeds off split shot and flies you are going to hook fish right now.  The nymph fishing was great.  There were a few fish rising but it was spotty, and we landed some fish on some swung streamers as well.  This may be the nicest November weekend we've ever seen so it's a great weekend to get out.  The canyon section seemed to have less wind.  We caught fish on some baetis nymphs, orange beaded flies, and the Tailwater Charlie produced the whole day.  Water is high, and a lot of normal structure is flooded for this time of the year... maybe it will move those weeds out but we need some cold weather this winter to clean the system.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Missouri River - November 3rd, 2010

RECORDED:    49 °   FISHING: Good
The weather is simply too nice......hunters and fishermen are both at a disadvatage.  We had October in September and September in October.  Now, we're into the 1st week of November and the weather is still too nice.  High temperatures will reach into the mid 60's, the wind will be calmer and the sun will shine.  Not many birds have flown south yet.  Perhaps there's a message there.

There's hope.  Saturday, when you're hopefully not working, the clouds will move in and the winds are suppose to stay low.  If so, you'll have a great day on the river.  It's hard to say what bugs you'll use.  It's been awhile since it has mattered.  There's still a few baetis and midges.  Who know's, hoppers may still work.  Nymphs will for sure.

The river remains in great shape.  We saw 7 boats from the Dam to Cascade,  The weather may keep you out of the woods and on the river.  On Sunday, you might think about watching some football.  The wind is suppose to blow again.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Missouri River - October 31st, 2010

RECORDED:    49 °   FISHING: Fair
I fished in the canyon the last two days. There was a healthy amount of smaller fish in the river. Looks pretty for next year. We were throwing Blooms caddis with a 18 or 16 soft hackle off the back of it and  picked up a few nice fish rainbows from 17 to 20. They were eating bugs on the swing pretty good. Saw some nice fish up but few and far. Blue bird skys made it tuff for any kind of good Blue Wing hatches. I picked up an 18" brown trolling the slack water with a gold MT Mouthwash and a few other fish on a smolt.  Around 4 both evenings fish were eating an October Caddis on the swing.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Missouri River - October 28th, 2010

RECORDED:    32 °   FISHING: Good
You will have moments of glory on the river.  They don't happen all the time, but they do happen.  Weather generally, and at the moment of truth, all have to be on your side.  Streamers are the exception to the rule.

Today: Partly sunny (mostly cloudy with high clouds, actually), with a high near 58. South southwest wind between 8 and 11 mph.

Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61. West southwest wind between 8 and 13 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.   It's not always windy.

Saturday: Partly sunny (trending towards cloudy), with a high near 56. South southwest wind around 8 mph.

Saturday Night: Parties throughout the area.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 53. The Cafe will be open for the last time of the year for breakfast.  Hangovers will be serviced.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Missouri River - October 26th, 2010
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:    43 °   FISHING: Good
Dark skies, on-and-off winds, a shower from time-to-time, temperatures in the 40's and 50's - it's fall.  Tourists have all but left the area.  There's still a few around.  Based on the weather forecast, they'll have decent fishing.

Tuesday: A slight chance of rain and snow showers. Snow level 3600 feet. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 45. West wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 49. West southwest wind between 8 and 16 mph.

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 54. South southwest wind around 9 mph.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 57.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 55.

When it's windy, throw nymphs and streamers.  When it's not, throw bwo dries.  Clouds are covering the area.  When the wind is on your side, you'll find some heads up.

Water flows have steadily climbed to 4800 cfs - a great flow.  Water temperatures have steadily decined to the low 50's.  Baetis and streamers seem like good fly choices.

Enjoy the river.  Many of the browns are back from spawn.  The rainbows are thick and mighty.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Missouri River - October 23rd, 2010
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:    40 °   FISHING: Great
The river should fish great today -

Saturday: Isolated showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 63. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

What a difference the clouds make. They're here and they're low.  Where have the clouds been?  We've missed them.

Enjoy Saturday.  Sunday looks like it will move by quickly.

Sunday: Showers likely after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 59. Breezy, with a south southwest wind between 16 and 23 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

With all the great football games on TV and the expected high velocity winds, most people will stay home on Sunday.  It makes you wonder when the wind will start and stop.  Having the river to yourself is a treat.

Sunday Night: A chance of rain showers before midnight, then a chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35. Breezy, with a west southwest wind between 21 and 25 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Monday: A 30 percent chance of rain, mainly before noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 48. Breezy, with a west wind around 22 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph.

When locals fish.............

Tuesday: A 30 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42.

Wednesday: A slight chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 45.

It's about time for the weather to change.  It looks like it will happen abruptly.  California is expecting 5 inches of rain in several areas within the state.  It's a virtual deluge out there.  The general movement of the storm appears to be headed our way.  While we may not get the precipitation the storm brews, we are already experiencing some impact.  Thank goodness.  Fall is finally here.

Cooler temperatures and cloudier days will greatly enhance your dry fly enthusiasm.  Streamers are way more fun than n...  we won't even mention them.  The river is still at 55° and 4,100 cfs - perfect.  Don't expect a lot of tourism on the river until next spring.  You will see a significant uptick in the local population of anglers.

The season isn't over yet.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Missouri River - October 21st, 2010

RECORDED:    48 °   FISHING: Good
You've gotta love Montana.  From daytime highs of 70° and sunny as can be to snow with high temperatures in the low 30's, that's what you're in for over the next several days.  It looks like the weekend will provide the moderate temperatures, the clouds and the moisture you're seeking.  When you return to work on Monday, you won't care about the freezing temperatures.

Until then, you'll get them on nymphs.  You'll likely get a dose of weeds as well.  Early and late yield some dry fly options.  It's a good thing we have streamers.  The fish eat them and the weeds present few problems.

Keep looking forward to the weekend.  You may finally get the fish you deserve.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Missouri River - October 20th, 2010
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:    40 °   FISHING: Good
From good to great - a change in the weather can make it happen.  If you're an optimist, you hope that the weather man is wrong for the next few days.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 65. Southwest wind between 7 and 9 mph.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 68. Southwest wind between 13 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 60.

Without the clouds, think positive.  Nymphs will get them.  Or, fish early and late with dries and streamers.  Amazingly, you can still fish summertime bugs - caddis, pseudos, and even hoppers.

If you're an optimist, you are confident that you'll be on the river this weekend:

Saturday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 56.

Sunday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 51.

Perhaps the "slight chance of showers" will bring just enough clouds to bring the Mo's toads to the surface chasing baetis.  Think positive.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Missouri River - October 15th, 2010
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:    56 °   FISHING: Great

Nymphing continues to be great.  That's probably not what you want to hear.  You'll get em, but the odds are stacked against you if  you're seeking topwater activity.  You'll have to spend some time on the river to hit the right condtions.  If you like the depths, come on down.

The next few days have a glimmer of hope.  The river just dropped a notch in flows. Wind is generally out of the picture.  Temperatures in the 50's to low 60's will prevail.  The sky will be "mostly" sunny through Monday.  After that, it turns sunny.  Catch a cloud and you might catch a break.  Where did all this awesome weather come from?

If you're tired of prospecting water with attractor patterns, dredging the bottom with nymphs or seeking bank feeders, throw a streamer.  It's not too late.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Missouri River - October 13th, 2010
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:    36 °   FISHING: Great
Enjoy the warmth that the next few days will bring.  High temperatures will reach the 60's to low 70's.  By Friday, you'll feel fall settle in.  From Saturday on, high temperatures will only reach the low 50's.  Partly cloudy conditions are forecast.  It's not baetis soup yet, but it's getting close.'

The river took a small upward bump from 4500 cfs to 4700 cfs over the last 2 days.  Along with the increased flows came a small drop in the water temperature - from 57° to 56°.   It was chilly last night and it promises to be chilly from here on out.  Cooler water temps are on the way.

The bright sun hasn't helped your dry fly desires.  There's baetis, but they aren't clinging to the river.  Nymphing continues to be a staple.  Hoppers shouldn't be counted out quite yet.  Streamers help change things up and produce large fish. Evenings are fairly quiet in terms of traffic.  Fishing in the evenings has its charm.

Industry Party - 17 Days and counting...............
