Missouri River - September 19th, 2010

FISHING: Good
Urban Missouri Report: After coffee in the shop Saturday I decided to practice with the spey rod in town. Dropped in below Black Eagle falls. Started working up from the Interpretive center, and as I got higher there were caddis and a small mayfly hatch. Sportted a few rising fish. Caught a small rainbow on a dry, and 2 fish on nymphs after that. The largest fish was about 15-16 inches and all rainbows, although we have caught browns in this short stretch of the Mo. If you only have an hour or so to burn, spend some time exploring in town.

FISHING: Excellent
Fall is here. There's no debate about it now. Snow didn't make it to Craig, but the local foothills had their first taste of winter. Yep, it's chilly. The warmest part of the day was around 10:00 am - 49° F. The rich dark clouds brought on and off again rain. If that wasn't enough, how about some northeast wind? The river is busy. We won't see sunshine until Tuesday.
Current Conditions:
Water Temperature: 57°
Streamflow: 4,200 cfs
Weather Forecast: Cloudy with highs near 60° F
Bugs: Lots
Fish: Big for the Missouri (Huge by most other standards)
Are you in your car yet?
What isn't working on the river? Midges, Pseudos, BWO's, Caddis, Hoppers, Nymphs, Streamers......all produce.
Weather holds the key to your success. Expect mixed weather conditions from here on out. Cool mornings and nights will be the norm. It's our favorite time of the year.
Start your day with a hearty breakfast in The Trout Shop Cafe. Open now through the end of the Mo's fishing season.

FISHING: Great
Fall appears to be settling in. Our cottonwoods are starting to turn color. Cloudy and cool conditions generally prevail. Hmmmm.....sounds like fall baetis are in the air. Indeed they are.
Along with the mixed weather, expect to have mixed, but great fishing. If you're at the Dam, you'll find very large trout eating nymphs. From the Wolf Creek Bridge to Cascade, dry fly fishing is a possibility. What you will be using for weapons matters. If you want to fish the water, hoppers produce well. If you want to target rising fish, you'll find bwo's, caddis, pseudos, calibaetis, midges, october caddis, and a few surprises are necessary. Ants are still working their magic.
Buggers...................... it's that time of year. Stay with it. You'll be glad you did.
At 4200 cfs and 59° the Mo is poised to show her charm. The weather heading our way should turn summer (did we have one?) to fall. It might be a good time to call in sick.

FISHING: Great
Fished the river last night and fish were up eating caddis very well. These were not subtle emerger eats...violent caddis destruction was occuring. I actually took the emerger off they were eating so obviously on top... we were up high by the dam. The reports coming from Craig was that hopper fishing was excellent from Wolf Creek bridge to Craig...below that we have had mixed reports. Streamer fishing has picked up and is really well for some but the weeds floating in the river can make it frustrating. Nymphing is productive all day but again the weeds in the river make it an endless task of removing weeds from the hook. The weather has been great and we most likely only have a few weeks left of weather like this.

FISHING: Great
The recent cold and wet weather has dramatically improved the fishing on the Mo. With river flows of 4,180 cfs, 59° water temperatures and moderate air temperatures in the 70's, the Missouri is very attractive. And, the fish are eating dry flies.
They're eating everything else too. Midges, pseudos, hoppers, nymphs, scuds and streamers all yield large fish. We didn't get the epic dry fly fishing we were expecting in July. By the time the river came down to a dry fly level, many of the bugs had already burned off. We won't have the water flows issues of July in September or October. There's no reason to expect anything other than epic dry fly fishing this fall.
Very nice weather is on tap for several days. It's won't be long before the clouds hang low and BWO's come off in earnest. By then, water temperatures will be perfect. When the clouds enter the picture, we'll raise the dry fly rating to excellent. For now, enjoy a wide variety of fishing options. All sections are fishing well. Each section will reward you in different ways.
FYI - Industry Party October 30 at The Lodge at Eagle Rock (Dearborn Inn).

Missouri River - September 5th, 2010

FISHING: Good
While we're just beginning September, the weather will feel and act like late September to early October. Air temperatures will struggle to get out of the 60's for days. Expect anythng from brilliant sunshine to dense fog on a day-to-day basis. What the clouds and wind will be doing is tough to say. Cool conditions, however, create the general theme in the long and short term weather forecast. Is it fall already?
River flows have increased to 4,800 cfs. The river's temperature is declining and will soon reach the 50's. The prime combination of flows and temperture are very close to reality. Cool nights will take us there.
The Missouri's trout were big in the spring. They've had all summer to eat and are now simply huge. Despite their size, they eat dry flies. The weather is right, but the bugs (baetis) are a little ways off. For now, nymphs produce the most fish. Streamers are hard to resist on cloudy days. Hoppers are everywhere and help satisfy your dry fly desires.
If you look closely, you'll see a few trees showing their autumn colors. We're not quite there yet, but the cool nights we're presently experiencing can't be overlooked. The steam coming off the river most mornings is a tell tale sign that the Mo is preparing for winter. Until winter arrives, enjoy the best the Missouri has to offer.

FISHING: Great
Weather was a little cooler today. Cloudy off and on there was a decent caddis hatch coming off the whole time. We floated from Mid Canon to Mnt. Palace. Nymphing seemed consistent. Pheasant tails, caddis nypmhs, and we landed a fish on the Keller's Good Night as well. Late the caddis hatch was getting better as we were taking off. I think streamers will be a good idea as soon as the weeds leave. There are plenty of loose weeds floating on the lower witch makes the nymphing a little frustrating. However, there were fish to throw to on top nearly the whole way.

FISHING: Good
Anywhere from 40° to 85° will greet you on the river. Cool nights, however, are the norm. We can't remember the last time we had to light our wood stoves in August was, but we're not ready for winter quite yet. There's lots of fall fishing coming your way. Cool nights are cooling the river and heating up the activity.
If you like to throw streamers or nymphs, then the Mo is for you. If you're patient and like the lower river, you'll find some serious dry fly fishing on cloudy cool days. You're in luck. We'll have a few nice days, but mostly we'll have cool with a chance of rain most days. Watch the weather and pick your dry fly days accordingly. There's still a few weeks before we swing into fall. By then, it will probably be 90°. Or, it could be like last year - bitter cold from time to time. It's that time of year.
For now, throw nymphs, hoppers, ants, and streamers. The fish are very fat and very strong. Soon, you'll forget about hardware and start to throw dries.
Check out our web site's bargain center. Our manufacturers have released their changed and discontinued inventory. We have many, many great items for sale at near wholesale prices. Get ready for fall!

Missouri River - August 30th, 2010
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:

FISHING: Good
What do you know? A big change in the weather has made a difference in your fishing. It feels and looks like mid October. Clouds were down to the top of the cottonwoods yesterday. Low pressure let some fish rise to the top.
It's great streamer weather. Plain old olive wooly buggers are working their magic. At the Dam, you'll get plenty of action with very large rainbows and browns. The crowds that were jamming up the river below the Dam have started to spread out. So, you can catch large trout in relative peace.
Pelican Point to Cascade has been frequented more often lately. Two days ago, 10 boats covered this section. Fishing reports were OK, but not great. Yesterday, only 1 boat covered this section. The anglers started out slow, but had a glimpse of what's to come. Baetis, yes baetis, were out in solid numbers. So was a sulphur colored PMD. Most importantly, the fish were eating them off the top.
We're still in August and most of the time you'll be fishing terrestrials and nymphs. The river is in great shape and is priming itself for the fall fish fest. It won't be long now. Cool and longer nights will cool the river further. While some baetis have been spotted, they're still a few weeks out from being the real deal. When they are................ you'll be here.
Weather will be on your side through Wednesday. With the river at 4,600 cfs and 61°, fishing is generally good. With the cloud cover promised for the short term, it could be great.
