Missouri River - September 2nd, 2004

River Levels [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
REPORTS: Hmmm, looks like more of that windy crap. If the wind stays at a reasonable level, though, you could have some very good fishing in the clouds that're on tap for today. If you're having trouble getting the fish to play on top, for whatever reason, the standard Missouri nymphs (lightining bugs, pink scuds, RS2s, etc...) have been working well as tandems in the chest deep riffles. The streamer action has the potential to improve dramatically in the clouds, and might be a good alternative if the wind's destroying your long leader, tiny dryfly casts. You're almost certainly in for a brawl with the wind today. Any breaks or protected areas should produce great fishing today.
HATCHES: tricos,psuedos, midges, hoppers, caddis.
FLIES: Subsurface it'll be the standard Mo junk like Ray Charles, eggs, size 16 to 20 flashback p-tails, lightning bugs, RS2's, red San Juan worms, pink and grey scuds (pinks in 16s and 18s and greys all the way up to a #12). For the dries, try comparaduns in 14s and 16s, size 18 cream colored cripples and parachute Adams, Griffith's gnats in 14 to 18, button emergers in 16s to 20s. We've also been getting lots of fish on Goddard and elk hair caddis in 14s. The brown buggers in the shallows have begun working for us again recently.
WEATHER: REST OF TODAY...PARTLY CLOUDY... A CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS IN THE AFTERNOON. COOLER. HIGHS 60 TO 65...50 TO 55 IN THE MOUNTAINS. WEST WINDS 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 35 MPH. CHANCE OF RAIN 30 PERCENT. TONIGHT...MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A 20 PERCENT CHANCE OF RAIN SHOWERS LOWS 40 TO 45...AROUND 35 IN THE MOUNTAINS. WEST WINDS 10 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 30 MPH. FRIDAY...MOSTLY CLOUDY... HIGHS 60 TO 65...50 TO 55 IN THE MOUNTAINS WEST WINDS 5 TO 15 MPH.

Stream Flow Information [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
The Mighty Mo is flowing 2900 C.F.S. The trico hatch is still going fairly strong, however the weather is going to be a huge determing factor in the hatch. Wind is the biggest enemy with the hatch and you need to have a day without wind. Nymphing has been improving as the weeds are starting to subside slightly. Hoppers with droppers have been good at times and if you don't want to deal with the beads at all give a small ant or beetle a try.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: Hi Vis Caddis #14-16, Bloom's Parachute Caddis #14-16, Hen Wing Caddis #14-16, Trico Thorax #18-22, Trico Spinner #18-22, BH Trico Spinner #18-20, Parachute Pheasant Tail #16-18, Molly Hopper #6-8, Parachute Hopper #6-8, BH Mangy Caddis #14-16, BH Lightining Bug #16-18.

REPORTS: Pretty much a repeat of yesterday. Tricos are still the name of the game in the morning, but the easier fish will come afterward on bigger mayfly parachutes or hopper rigs. Consistant cloud cover recently has awakened the streamer fishing a bit more too, although the weeds are making this viable only in specific locations. Using long leaders, light tippets and something that's a bit different (just a bit bigger) than the naturals has been working the best for tricos. A size 8 or 10 tan Rainy's hopper has been the goods when prospecting. Our best streamer activity lately has been pulling brown buggers off shallow, gradually sloping cobble banks with no weed growth. The Mo below Holter is down 100 cfs in the past 24 hours and has a water temperature of 56 degrees this morning. The flow today is 3200 cfs.
HATCHES: tricos, midges, hoppers, caddis.
WEATHER: TODAY...RAIN SHOWERS LIKELY IN THE MORNING...THEN PERIODS OF RAIN IN THE AFTERNOON. HIGHS 60 TO 65...AROUND 55 IN THE MOUNTAINS. SOUTHWEST WINDS 15 TO 25 MPH. TONIGHT...PERIODS OF RAIN... REPORTS: Same stuff really. The cooler, cloudy weather is making things a bit easier on the Mo the past few days, although it's still much more technical than it is earlier in the year. Tricos are still the main attraction but the fish are also looking at terrestrials and caddis pretty well too. Once the tricos fall you can keep the fish interested in terrestrials midday. The caddis are still the name of the game in the evening and right into dark. The low flows, high water temps, weed growth and extremely selective fish are making for typically technical, late summer fishing on the Mo. If you're into big, technical fish, this river could be right up your alley!
HATCHES: PMDs, tricos, midges, hoppers, caddis.
WEATHER: TODAY...PARTLY CLOUDY... A 20 PERCENT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS IN THE MORNING. HIGHS 80 TO 85...70 TO 75 IN THE MOUNTAINS. WEST WINDS 5 TO 10 MPH. TONIGHT...PARTLY CLOUDY... SATURDAY NIGHT...PARTLY CLOUDY... LOWS 50 TO 55... NORTHWEST WINDS 10 TO 15 MPH. SUNDAY...PARTLY CLOUDY WITH A 30 PERCENT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. HIGHS 70 TO 75. WEST WINDS 10 TO 15 MPH. SUNDAY NIGHT...MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A 50 PERCENT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. LOWS IN THE MID 40S TO LOWER 50S. MONDAY...MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A 30 PERCENT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. Stream Flow Information [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
The Mighty Mo is flowing 2830 C.F.S. The fishing has slowed a lot on the Mo. There is still decent tricos hatching in the morning and the fishing has been good as long as the wind stays down. Once the wind picks up the tricos are done for the day. Hoppers and ants have been fishing alright once the trico activity is finished or blown to the dakota's. The weeds are getting tough and nymph fishing is really just a test of your patience. The water temps are also getting pretty warm on the river below Craig and the fish are not real interested in feeding much in the afternoon. You can still find some pockets of caddis in the evenings but you will have to really go looking for them and there is a good chance you won't find many fish feeding on them when you find them. The reports have been tough from the Missouri so you may want to look for other options for the time being.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: Hi Vis Caddis #14-16, Bloom's Parachute Caddis #14-16, Hen Wing Caddis #14-16, Trico Thorax #18-22, Trico Spinner #18-22, BH Trico Spinner #18-20, Parachute Pheasant Tail #16-18, Molly Hopper #6-8, Parachute Hopper #6-8, BH Mangy Caddis #14-16, BH Lightining Bug #16-18.

REPORTS: Tricos are still the main attraction but its been very tough on the Mo lately. Once the tricos fall you can keep a few fish interested in terrestrials midday. The caddis are still the name of the game right before dark. The low flows, high water temps, weed growth and extremely selective fish are making August a tough time to be on the Mo. This isn't to say, though, that the fishing itself is bad, it's just WAY more technical than say, May, when the fatties are willing to come up and eat #14 stimulators at the end of a 15' cast. If you're into big, technical fish, this river could be right up your alley!
HATCHES: PMDs, tricos, midges, hoppers, caddis.

The low flows, high water temps, weed growth and extremely selective fish are making August a tough time to be on the Mo, just wait another week or so and you'll start to see some pseudos - then you'll get an idea of what technical fishing is all about.

REPORTS: The Mo is getting tougher everday. August is when the fish get REAL picky and want realistic imitations, good drifts, long leaders and light tippets. Tricos are the main attraction right now with early morning spinner falls bringing lots of fish to the surface. The terrestrial fishing has been good the past few days, smaller bugs being the best producers - ants & beetles. There is some algae in the river now, but nothing too bad at this point.
HATCHES: PMDs, tricos, midges, hoppers, caddis.
