Missouri River - June 19th, 2011
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:    61 °   FISHING: Good

If you live in Montana, you are looking forward to warm weather.  We're only a few days from the official beginning of summer, but cool, if not outright cold, temperatures have been the norm.  We have not seen 80° and are used to highs in the 50's and low 60's.  This week will be slightly warmer - highs in the 60's and 70's.

If you fish in Montana, you should be relieved that the cooler temps have paved the path to lower and cleaner water.  Our snowpack is melting slowly for now.  We were expecting flows as high as 18,000 cfs below Holter Dam last week.  Instead, we watched the local tributaries and the Missouri River inflows to Canyon Ferry Lake decline steadily.  The Missouri River below Holter Dam peaked at 17,100 cfs and has settled at 16,300 cfs.  That's still a big flow, but not nearly as high as it could be.  Be glad that the extreme high temperatures in Arizona and New Mexico are staying south of our riversheds.

Fishing reports have generally been good in terms of catching fish.  The allure to the Missouri River is flat water dry fly fishing.  We've heard a few reports of rising fish, but not enough to get excited about.  PMD's and Caddis should be starting.  How long will they wait?  For now, you'll have to settle for simply catching healthy & fat rainbows and browns on nymphs.  The wire worm, scuds, sow bugs, and other junk are yielding bent rods.  Not every day is a great day, but most are satisfying.

Weather and Lunar Phases

RECORDED:    74 °   FISHING: Great
We fished yesterday from the dam to Craig and fishing was pretty solid considering the flows and the clarity of the water (Prickly Pear is still flowing chocolate fudgescicles).  Fish are stacked in likely areas (i.e. inside lane of bull pasture island, end of california island) but so are the boats.  Any type of slower water that you would likely overpass on the float is holding fish right now.  As for depth, we were getting fish right around 9-12'.  Ticking the bottom is key right now, if you're not tickin, you're not in the zone.  Hot flies include:

- Pink lightning bug

- Crystal meth dips

- Barbie worm

- SJW

- Sows

- Hot beads (yes they're still working)

- Neon gnats

- Czechs

Although there is a lot of water in the river below the Dearborn, it may be worth some exploring since those fish haven't seen a fly in a very long time.  As always, be safe on the water.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Missouri River - June 15th, 2011

RECORDED:    48 °   FISHING: Good
Whew................. a significant break in the weather seems to be holding.  We haven't seen rain in several days and the forecast barely calls for more.  Perhaps the earth has tilted enough and brought us a normal weather pattern.  High temperatures will be cool - only in the mid 50's.

Good news!  The Bureau of Reclamation is raising flows now that the threat of downstream flooding has subsided.  15,000 cfs of clean water is pouring into the river below Holter Dam.  Both the Dearborn River and Little Prickly Pear Creek are subsiding.  Anglers have more clean water to fish.

Fishing with nymphs was good prior to the increase in flows and should get better with the improved river clarity.  The wire worm, scuds, small mayfly nymphs and sow bugs are still staples.  Streamers are hit and miss, but help break the day up.  Dry flies are still a myth.

We are in peak runoff right now.  Flows coming into Canyon Ferry Lake are huge - 29,400 cfs.  With cooler and drier weather forecast, you could see these flows decline, but so far they are hanging in there.  Thank goodness that we are below Canyon Ferry Lake and receiving a break from the super high flows.  While nearly every stream in Montana is blown out, the Missouri continues to provide fishable water with fat and healthy fish.  It's not ideal, but you will get a tug on the end of your line (perhaps a big tug).

Weather and Lunar Phases

Missouri River - June 9th, 2011

RECORDED:    48 °   FISHING: Fair
Up, up, up go the tributaries.  Fortunately, up goes the Missouri as well.  Recently, the Bureau of Reclamation announced river flow decreases due to downstream flooding.  Apparently, the Bureau changed their minds.  The Missouri has 14,100 cfs of clean water being dumped on Little Prickly Pear Creek and the Dearborn River's mud.  From the Dam to the Wolf Creek Bridge, the river is clear.  From the Wolf Creek Bridge to Stickney Creek, you have river right at your disposal. From Stickney on down..... mud.

There's some relief in sight.  Rather than the 100% chance of rain that we've grown accustomed to, the weather man is calling for a 30% chance of rain mostly in the afternoon starting Friday.  Thank goodness.  We like the moisture, but this might be a bit much.  It's time to dry out for awhile.

The wire worm, grey sow bugs, fire bead sow bugs, small lightning bugs, Bloom's weight fly and a smorgasborg of other small nymphs will get the job done.  Dries?  Nope, but perhaps a streamer or two will break up the day for you.  Streamers seem to work better the more you venture into the mud. Be brave.

The Missouri is not in great shape, but it is fishing and people are catching fish.  Until it dries out, you can't mow the yard so you might as well fish.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Missouri River - May 31st, 2011

Could it be?  A little sunshine?  Wow.

Partly sunny, a moderate chance of showers and highs in the 50's is forecast for most of the week.  Both the weather and river flows are subject to change.

Prior to the recent deluge, flows out of Holter Dam were at 15,000 cfs.  Flows were reduced to help prevent downstream flooding.  Now that inflows have subsided somewhat, the Bureau of Reclamation could bump the flows upward again.  We've seen a small increase that took the river from 13,600 to 14,000 cfs.

Regardless of the flows, at this point your fishing will revolve around nymphs.  That's not all bad.  Angling success has been high.  Streamers are hit and miss.  Dry fly fishing is non existent.  Most of the action is from the Dam to the Dearborn Confluence.  While the river dirties below the confluence, we have seen boats venture into the lower river.  The Dearborn River is running at 1900 cfs.  It is declining, but has a long ways to go before it clears.  The canyon will hold some mud for awhile.

Green is the word.  Enjoy your beautiful surrounding and catch a few nice fish.  Don't get lost in the scenery too much.  Your thingamabobber sinks often.

Our crazy Dam environment.  Because of the heavy rains we recently received, the Bureau of Reclamation is lowering the river.

Recent precipitation in the Helena and Great Falls area, has caused moderate increases in streamflows downstream of Canyon Ferry. In an attempt to maintain river flows downsteam at near channel capacity, releases out of Canyon Ferry to the Missouri River will be reduced as follow:
CANYON FERRY RELEASES AND OPERATIONS:
All times are Mountain Daylight Savings Time (MDST)
At 1530 hour on Thursday, May 26, 2011:

Maintain releases through the river outlet gates at 0 cfs.
Decrease releases through the spillway gates to 6,000 cfs.
Maintain turbine releases at
Maintain releases for Helena Valley Project at 615 cfs (300 cfs pumped to Helena Valley and 315 cfs discharged to the Missouri River).
Decrease average daily release to the Missouri River to 12,200 cfs.
Decrease average total release from Canyon Ferry to 12,500 cfs.

RECORDED:    45 °   FISHING: Good
The early trout gets the worm, the scud, the sow bug, and the mayfly nymph.  Despite the high flows, the river is fishing well - at least part of it.  From the Dearborn River down, the river reminds you of a river flowing through Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

As Brian Neilsen says, "Dry land is a myth".  It's not raining right now (9:50 AM), but very likely will be over the next few days.  When will Seattle leave Montana?

There's a bright spot on the Missouri.  While the river is not in prime condition, customers are catching a bunch of fish.  While we can't predict future river flows, we do know that we have a lot of storage space at Canyon Ferry Lake and citizens downstream can't take on more water than they already have coming there way.  Ultimately, preventing downstream flooding plays a key role.  Our "guess" is that flows will remain stable at around 15,000 cfs.......flush.

What will tomorrow or next week bring?

Weather and Lunar Phases

RECORDED:    54 °   FISHING: Great
Missouri river up between Craig and Holter dam is fishing great, the fish are in the typical high water holding areas. It takes a little searching but once you find the fish keep fishing because where there is one there is more. Fishing long leaders with heavy flies under an indicator with floating line is the way to go, crayfish, wire-worms, San Juan worms are all good primary flies with a BWO, midge or sow-bug dropper.  If that’s not working huck streamers, just remember; keep fishing until you find them.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Missouri River - May 18th, 2011
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:    36 °   FISHING: Fair
Steady flows have provided steady fishing primarily with nymphs.  The likely candidate to fish is the San Juan Worm.  But, other bugs such as the green machinge, fire bead sow bugs, scuds, mayfly nymphs and midge larvae seem to be taking the lead.  Wire worms will get to the bottom and will take a tasty trailer with it.  Streamers?  Nymphs...... No dries.

With Little Prickly Pear running at 600+ cfs and the Dearborn flowing at 1000 + cfs, there is some dirt flowing into the Mo.  Flows in these tributaries is subsiding at the moment. The clear flows of 12,400 cfs coming out of Holter Dam is more than enough to keep the Missouri in fishable condition.  Most people are pulling out at or above Mid Canyon.  A few boats have made it all the way to Cascade.

There's a good chance of rain this weekend.  For now, the Missouri is in fair shape and producing some nice fish.  Most of the streams in Montana are blown.  The Missouri continues to show her charm.
