FISHING: Good
River Levels [click here]
REPORTS: The cooler, cloudy weather has definietly made for better dryfly action over the past few days. We've had some VERY good fishing there for big league browns. Water flows below Holter are ideal for wading right now and should stay that way for another week at least. The past 2 days have seen very good fishing using blue wing comparaduns and skwala dries on the lower floats. We pretty much took it to 'em with black Chernobyls and bugmiesters. Damon ripped a brown out of there yesterday that had its own zip code. Below Holter, the flow this morning is 3050 cfs. Gotta love that tailwater graph!
HATCHES: Midges, blue wings.
FLIES: Yellow poxy head buggers, green and chartreuse buggers, size 16 and 18 cripples and parachute patterns. Ray Charles, eggs, size 16 to 20 flashback p-tails, lightning bugs, RS2's, red San Juan worms, pink and grey scuds (pinks in 16s and 18s and greys all the way up to a #12). For the dries, try palaminos in black, tiny comparaduns or polywing tricos in 18s to 22s, size 18 cream colored cripples and parachute Adams, Griffith's gnats in 14 to 18, button emergers in 16s to 20s.
WEATHER: Today Mostly Cloudy High 53°F Mostly cloudy with isolated rain showers and mountain snow showers. Highs 50 to 55. . . 40 to 45 in the mountains. West winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain and snow 20 percent. Tonight Partly Cloudy Low 26°F Partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain and mountain snow. Lows 25 to 30. Light winds becoming north 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Saturday Partly Cloudy High 58°F Partly cloudy. A slight chance of rain and mountain snow. Highs 50 to 60. . . 40 to 50 in the mountains. North winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain and snow 30 percent. Saturday Night Mostly Cloudy Low 35°F Mostly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain and snow. Lows 30 to 35. . . Around 25 in the mountains. North winds 10 to 15 mph. Sunday Partly Cloudy High 65°F Partly cloudy with scattered rain showers and snow showers. Highs 50 to 55. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain and snow 30 percent.

FISHING: Fair
Stream Flow Information [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
Flows at Holter are 3910 C.F.S. The reports that we have been getting are still fairly slow. It appears that many of the rainbows may be up the smaller tributaries spawning. There has been some decent midge activity on the river and there is not much else happening on the surface. Nymphing with the usual fly patterns is producing some fish, but it is not the great fishing that the Mo can provide when most of the fish are in the river system.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: Soft Hackle Sow Bug #16-18, Ray Charles #16-18, San Juan Worm #10, Pink Scud #12-14, Rainbow Warrior #16-18, Red Midge Larvae #18-20, Olive Midge Larvae #18-20, Sawyer PT #16-18, Flashback PT #16-18, Egg patterns #10.

FISHING: Good
River Levels [click here]
REPORTS: Today should be a pretty much of a repeat of yesterday weather wise on the Mo. We've been having some very good fishing over there recently. Our best action has been on streamers fished tight to the bank and then later in the day, tiny blue wing dries. To round it out, we've been fishing tandem nymph rigs, too, and making 'em pay with those. The wind has been a non issue of late which has made for not only more productive fishing, but much more comfortable fishing as well. Keeping our fingers crossed for more of the same today! Below Holter, the flow is down anohter 100 cfs to 3030. This represents about a 900 cfs decrease in the past few days so there are a lot of those happy low water places showing up now that we haven't seen in a few months. Good stuff Maynard.
REPORTS: The partial cloud cover and warmer temps today could have the fishing getting back into high gear again on the Mo. If the wind does stay managable today, you should have lots of action on this river. The tandem nymph rigs along with smaller mayfly dries should work well today. Missouri River - March 28th, 2004

FISHING: Good
River Levels [click here]
REPORTS: It's going to be a nice day on the Mo today. Look for mostly sunny skies and relatively calm winds. It may be a little too nice a bit too suddenly. Bright sun for the first time today could keep the fishing a bit more sporadic than even possibly tomorrow under the same conditions. Look for pods of fatties up eating on the surface, but if they become too few and far between, you can always resort to the depth charges to get it done. Streamer fishing along the banks had been amazing, then tapered off a bit, but has begun a comeback in the last day or so. Tandem nymph rigs under indicators should hook you up from the dam all the way down. It'll be a nice day on the river today no matter what the fishing's like . . .and it's liable to be good! The flow this morning below Holter is 3620, the same as yesterday.
FISHING: Good
River Levels [click here]
REPORTS: Looks like today'll be another good one on the Mo with partial cloud cover, light rain and 10 mph winds. This'll give you a wide variety of options in terms of what you can fish productively today. Expect to once again see pretty consistant surface feeding by fatties on midges and blue wings. The tandem nymph rigs will, as usual be a great option as well. In our minds, though, you can't beat the amazing streamer action we've been having on the lower floats. Yellow's been the key! It'll be a good day on the Mo today!
HATCHES: Midges, blue wings.
FLIES: Yellow poxy head buggers, green and chartruse buggers, size 16 and 18 cripples and parachute patterns. REPORTS: More good stuff on the Mo today but with just a tiny bit more wind. You should see lots of pods up and eating and willing to take smaller mayfly and midge/midge cluster patterns. The indicator nymphing will continue to be a very productive tactic as will the streamer fishing. We've been having a blast whacking BIG browns on streamers lately. There should be plenty more of that today! The flow below Holter is 3880.

Missouri River - March 19th, 2004
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Fair
Stream Flow Information [click here]
Flows at Holter are 3780 C.F.S. The fishing has been improving some but the Mo remains a little on the slow side. It would be hard to leave the rivers closer to town right now anyways. The reports that we have gotten from the river have been fairly consistent with some decent nymphing and very little surface activity. The fishing closer to the dam has been the best bet with small sow bugs, midge larvae and pink scuds. The fishing should turn on soon and look for the midge hatches to become more consistent as we get further into spring. The lower portions of the river will see better dry fly activity due to warmer water the further away from the dam you get. As the air temps warm up give the lower portions of the river a try.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: Soft Hackle Sow Bug #16-18, Ray Charles #16-18, San Juan Worm #10, Pink Scud #12-14, Rainbow Warrior #16-18, Red Midge Larvae #18-20, Olive Midge Larvae #18-20, Sawyer PT #16-18, Flashback PT #16-18, Egg patterns #10.

REPORTS: The wind is still an issue, a big issue, but some of the floats above Cascade offer a bit more protection and that area has been giving up some fantastic streamer fishing. The upper river near the dam is still a happy place to be slinging the tandem junk, but if you've been doing that for the last few days, it might be time for a break. There have been some specific pods on the lower stretches that have been up and eating on the surface, too, so that's a bit more incentive. Looks like the wind's going to be with us for a while so tie your buggers heavy and bring your motorcycle helmets! Today's flow below Holter is about 100 cfs above yesterday's flow at 3860. The water temp is 36.
HATCHES: Midges.
FLIES: Ray Charles, eggs, size 16 to 20 flashback p-tails, lightning bugs, RS2's, red San Juan worms, pink and grey scuds (pinks in 16s and 18s and greys all the way up to a #12). For the dries, try paleminos in black, tiny comparaduns or polywing tricos in 18s to 22s, Griffith's gnats in 14 to 18, button emergers in 16s to 20s.
