Missouri River - April 26th, 2008
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:
42 °
FISHING: Good
Where did that come from? Hail, snow, rain, big thunder, and awesome lightning - all at 40° From the looks of things, expect more of the same on Saturday. Sunday looks a little better? We said the same thing about Friday in Thursday's report. The long term trend is eyeballing the 70's; at least today it is. If you can predict the weather......
Midges still dominate in a big way. BWO's are around, but seem held back. Unless we're going into the ice ages (are we?), that has to change very soon. It's already late. Deep nymphing with junk will produce fish. Streamers keep you active and produce some toads. The cafe is open on the weekends.
The river seems a little quiet. Wind now and again doesn't help matters. It's generally cloudy and cool. It's also generally unsettled. Do you suppose our rainbows have something else in mind? Please stay off of their sacred spawning grounds.
Riverflows
Inflows to Canyon Ferry Lake have surpassed the outflows- perhaps the start of the seasonal fill up. So far the fill rate is a trickle, about 1000 cfs. Cool weather has kept major runoff at bay. It will take some time to fill the lake so you shouldn't see a significant impact below Holter Dam anytime soon.
Once we see a significant increase in flows going into Canyon Ferry Lake, we will likely see an adjustment in the flows below Holter Dam. It is normal operating procedure and based upon the Bureau of Reclamation's water management policy. The adjustment will be minor compared to what is likely to enter the system over the next couple of months. Tailwaters do have their advantages. The Mo will remain in the zone for awhile. How long will it last?

Missouri River - April 25th, 2008
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:
45 °
FISHING: Good
Great fishing weather is promised for Friday and Saturday. You'll probably see a few heads looking up (eating midges). High temperatures will reach only into the mid 40's. Midges and baetis will be out enjoying the low pressure. When will BWO's be the rage? Watch the water temperature. It holds the key. The Dearborn, while trickling along, is running at 47°. It won't be long.
By Sunday, spring will be back in the air. The wind will follow. Warmer air will feel nice. Think Spring. It rained in the mountains Thursday. (It wasn't snow).

Once we see a significant increase in flows into Canyon Ferry, we will likely see an increase in flows below Holter Dam as part of the Bureau of Reclamation's water management policy. Even then, the Mo will remain in the zone. How long will it last?

Missouri River - March 27th, 2008
supplied by: Montana Trout Syndicate
RECORDED:
34 °
FISHING: Good
The Missouri river is starting to wake up from its winter hibernation. Longer warmer days are starting to make fisherman happy.
The good spring fishing on the Missouri is still probably a couple of weeks away. Currently most anglers are nymph fishing with scuds, sow bugs, glo bugs, and the SJ worm. Streamer fisherman are getting some nice browns with natural colored streamer/buggers fished slow and a little deeper than normal. Some sporadic midge activity on the surface. Though not really consistent.
LAND OF THE GIANTS- The spawn is on. Not my favorite time of year. To many Yahoos with spawn sacks and stringers. Be aware of where you are wading, try to avoid walking on the spawning beds. Be curtious of other fisherman. Plenty of fish for everyone. Fishing will return to normal in mid-May.

Missouri River - March 3rd, 2008
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:
38 °
FISHING: Great
Winter is coming and going. Along with it, rising trout to gobs of midges and decent snowfall. It's all about the weather. When it's right, it's on. When it's not, it's not. Dry fly enthusiasts have to pick and choose their conditions. Calm and cloudy produce on top. They produce subsurface as well, but there are enough heads up for you to forget about nymphing or pulling streamers. When the heads disappear, break out the junk. Slow and pink both work.
Water conditions remain constant. 3400 cfs at 33 degrees. Despite some warmer days, run-off hasn't really happened. Regular weather events seem to replace what disappears with the warmth. Snow and colder temperatures are on tap for a few days. Keep it coming.
Snowpack exists. In fact, we're 10 - 15% above normal. Who knows what spring / early summer will bring. It's the coldest the earth has been since 1966. We are cautiously optimistic that we'll have decent flows this year. We're not sure what normal is any more. Perhaps this year will remind us.
Give us a call at 800-337-8528 to get the latest conditions. Like Montana, things change quickly and often.

Missouri River - February 12th, 2008

RECORDED:

FISHING: Fair
Febuary 11th..... It is winter in Craig, Mt. But the weather for this week is looking better. Predicted highs this week are Friday and Saturday with a temperatures reaching the mid 40s. That combined with some cloud cover, should get some trout looking up at midges.
Griffin gnats or small parachutes trailed with emerging midge patterns can be very effective.
Nymphing with pink scuds and midge patterns can pay off as well, especially up by the dam.
Streamers? Go small, slow and deep. With water temperatures near freezing, the fish are sluggish.

WEEKLY SNOTEL SNOWPACK AND PRECIPITATION REPORT
The snowpack across the West is near to well above average in almost all areas. Cold weather and continued stormy weather have created an extensive snowpack in many regions. Heavy snow and dangerous avalanche conditions are delaying many monthly snow surveys for the NRCS and their cooperating agencies.
What a difference a year makes.
Weather will get between you and the river on Saturday. Sunday holds a little promise. You could see some midges on Monday and Tuesday as it warms up into the low-to-mid 40's. After that, we'll be back in the tundra.
Montana is having a winter.

FISHING: Poor
The Missour is iced. Basically all of Montana is frozen. Some warmer weather is needed to even think about it. Actually, about the only way to catch a fish now is through an ice hole. Its -20 below zero here in Helena. Good time to catch up on tying flies.

FISHING: Poor
It is winter in Craig Mt. Predicted high this week is Friday with a high of 24degrees.. It was 24 below this morning.
Ice on the river...ice in your rod guides... ice on the road... Will make fishing challenging.
A good plan might be to put some ice in a glass and tie some more flies..especially midges.. When things warm up you will need some griffins gnats and WD 40s.
Even better this Saturday afternoon on Verus airs "Chasing Silver: Andy's Return" Watch Andy Mills put some late season Florida Keys tarpon in the air... Becarfull, watching these films may lead to checking bank accounts and air fare's to Key West.

Missouri River - November 2nd, 2007
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:
55 °
FISHING: Excellent
Down, down, down go the the water temps. Up, up, up goes the W.I.N.D. The water temperature is very close to prime at 49°. How long will it stay there? Fishing is very close to prime as well weather depending. We can't control the wind, but wish that we could. When it isn't blowing at gale force, the fishing is stellar. When it's sunny and windy, nymphing produces. Buggers have slowed, but those who stay with it will stay warm and will be rewarded. You'll find some large specimens on the upper river. When the wind stops and the clouds settle in, fishing is as good as it gets. The fish know that winter is coming. Do you? Baetis and midge imitations are a must. The worm and scuds are producing for those who get desperate. The shop is open daily.

Missouri River - October 19th, 2007

FISHING: Great
Simon Gawesworth from RIO Products called me up a few months ago and asked me if I’d like to fish the Missouri River with him sponsored by RIO. It didn’t take long for me accept his generous offer. I was thrilled at the opportunity not only to fish with Simon, but also to get to spend some time on the “Mighty Mo”.
We fished four days covering the stretch between Holter Dam and Cascade. Each day we would fish a different section of river, normally covering 8 to 10 miles each day. The river was in great shape and the trout were hungry and aggressive. We had the best 3 or 4 day stretch of weather in October that Geof (one of our quides with 11 years experience on the Missouri) had ever seen. Our days were wind free for the most part, which is not the norm for this time of year. The great weather and no wind gave us the opportunity to fish any way we wanted. We nymphed a little, but why nymph when you’ve got big noses poking out of the water all day willing to take a dry. The Baetis hatches we incredible during the warmest part of the day, with blankets of bugs on the water that sometimes reached 40 to 50 bugs per square foot. I personally enjoyed the streamer fishing, targeting the structure along the rivers edge, Current seams and drop offs. Your best chance at really big trout on the Missouri is sometimes to throw really big streamers. We had a great time catching lots of Rainbows and Brown Trout averaging 15 to 17 inches, with quite a few around 20 inches. The big fish of the trip was a very healthy Brown that was a hair under 23 inches and caught by Charles George (aka The Prince) from The Bedford Sportsman on a Sculpin pattern that was 4 inches long. It was a great trip with fantastic people and thanks are due to the guides Mike and Geof , and the rest of the fine folks at The Trout Shop in Graig that took care of us. I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with Simon and the rest of the Rio staff.
If your looking for a great streamer line, try the Rio Outbound integrated shooting taper. It a great line for punching out big streamers a long way with accuracy.
