Missouri River - March 16th, 2004

FISHING: Fair
River Levels [click here]
REPORTS: Like we said, the wind has been the big issue lately! Yesterday was, hmmmm, not a happy thing. Today looks as if it could be gearing up for similar behavior, especially by mid afternoon. The upper stretches are now fishing more consistantly than below Craig, and if you're willing to chuck tandem nymph rigs in less than ideal conditions, you should have no problem getting hooked up. The small stuff and the pink stuff are the goods right now . . . imagine that! Today's flow below Holter is 3820 with a water temp of 26 degrees.
HATCHES: Midges.
FLIES: Ray Charles, eggs, size 16 to 20 flashback p-tails, lightning bugs, RS2's, red San Juan worms, pink and grey scuds (pinks in 16s and 18s and greys all the way up to a #12). For the dries, try paleminos in black, tiny comparaduns or polywing tricos in 18s to 22s, Griffith's gnats in 14 to 18, button emergers in 16s to 20s.
WEATHER: Today Mostly Cloudy High 53°F Mostly cloudy. A slight chance of snow in the mountains. Highs around 45. . . 35 to 40 in the mountains. West winds 10 to 15 mph increasing to 15 to 25 mph with gusts to near 40 mph in the afternoon. Tonight Mostly Cloudy Low 26°F Mostly cloudy. A slight chance of snow. . . A chance of snow in the mountains. Lows 25 to 30. West winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to near 35 mph. Tuesday Mostly Cloudy High 58°F Mostly cloudy. A slight chance of rain. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to near 40 mph. Wednesday Mostly Cloudy High 65°F Mostly cloudy. A chance of snow in the mountains. Highs 45 to 50. . . 35 to 40 in the mountains. Missouri River - March 11th, 2004

FISHING: Fair
River Levels [click here] REPORTS: It should be a good day on the Mo today although a bit more windy than yesterday. Partly cloudy skies in the forcast means there's the potential for some good stuff. There is some mud pumping from some of the tributaries over there, but it's not a huge issue. We're still having good fishing. We actually had some VERY good bugger activity fishing into the mud line rather than the clean water on the other side of the river. Look for pods of fish up and eating midges today. If that doesn't pan out for you, hit 'em with the tandem Missouri goods like lightning bugs, scuds, RS2s, etc...
WEATHER: Today Mostly Sunny High 53°F Mostly sunny. Highs 45 to 50. West winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts to near 30 mph. Tonight Partly Cloudy Low 26°F Partly cloudy. Lows 20 to 30. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Friday Rain High 58°F Rain and snow likely in the afternoon. In the mountains. . . A chance of snow then snow likely in the afternoon. Highs 45 to 50. West winds 15 to 25 mph. Friday Night Snow Low 35°F Snow likely. In the mountains. . . Snow then snow likely after midnight. Lows 10 to 20. North winds 15 to 25 mph. Saturday Mostly Cloudy High 65°F Mostly cloudy. Snow likely then a chance of snow in the afternoon. In the mountains. . . Snow likely. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 3 inches in the valleys and 4 to 6 inches in the mountains. Highs 30 to 35. North winds 15 to 20 mph.

Missouri River - March 5th, 2004

FISHING: Fair

REPORTS: It kind of depends on where you are on the river right now. Some sections have been fishing well, while others have been less than stellar. The wind is the main issue in that it's cold and when it blows, it tends to shut down most of the dryfly potential. We have been getting into some regularly feeding pods on the lower stretches between Mid Cannon and Cascade. These floats tend to be more protected from the wind and less crowded to boot. The tandem nymph rigs will still be your best bet for whacking greater numbers of fish.
HATCHES: Midges here and there.

FISHING: Fair
Stream Flow Information [click here]
Flows at Holter are3600 C.F.S. Fishing has been fair on the Mo over the past week to ten days. We have not had a lot of reports, however the ones that we have gotten have all been very similiar. Some very sparse Midge activity in the evenings with nymphs producing most of the fishing action. Many of the rainbows are getting ready to head into the tributaries of the river and this could be playing a role in the slower fishing conditions. It could also just be that the river hasn't fished great over the past couple of weeks. Things should improve as we move further into spring and as soon as we hear better reports from the Mo we will let you all know.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: BH Pheasant Tail #14-18,Soft Hackle Sow Bug #16-18, San Juan Worm #10, Pink Scud #12-14

We have been getting into some regularly feeding pods on the lower stretches between Mid Cannon and Cascade. These floats tend to be more protected from the wind and less crowded to boot. REPORTS: The weather on the Mo is about the same as around Missoula right now and looks like that'll be the case for the rest of the week. The big difference is the wind which will be cold and consistant over there. The colder nights will also have the nymphing not really waking up until about 10:30 in the morning, so there's no rush to be over there early. Look for all of the standard subsurface Missouri fare to be your best option and bring your indicators! LOTS of very subtle hits right now.
HATCHES: Midges.
FLIES: Ray Charles, eggs, size 16 to 20 flashback p-tails, lightning bugs, RS2's, red San Juan worms, pink and grey scuds (pinks in 16s and 18s and greys all the way up to a #12).

FISHING: Good
Stream Flow Information [click here]
Flows at Holter are 3840 C.F.S. Fishing has been good on the Mo below Holter over the past ten days. Nymphing has been the main stay with some sporadic midge action late in the day. Scuds, Sow Bugs, Midge Larvae and small mayfly patterns have been producing well. Look for rising fish late in the day as the sun moves off the water. We have also had several reports from the area below Hauser and they have been mixed as to the fishing results. The Mo is a good option if you want to travel a bit for your fishing. I would however recomend giving the Upper Madison a shot if you want to travel for the day. The Mo will fish well once the Madison is closed for the spring spawing season.
