Missouri River - January 21st, 2004
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Good
Stream Flow Information [click here]
Flows at Holter are 3840 C.F.S. Fishing has been good on the Mo below Holter over the past ten days. Nymphing has been the main stay with some sporadic midge action late in the day. Scuds, Sow Bugs, Midge Larvae and small mayfly patterns have been producing well. Look for rising fish late in the day as the sun moves off the water. We have also had several reports from the area below Hauser and they have been mixed as to the fishing results. The Mo is a good option if you want to travel a bit for your fishing. I would however recomend giving the Upper Madison a shot if you want to travel for the day. The Mo will fish well once the Madison is closed for the spring spawing season.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: BH Pheasant Tail #14-18,Soft Hackle Sow Bug #16-18, San Juan Worm #10, Pink Scud #12-14

FISHING: Poor
River Levels [click here]
Even if you're a die hard, it's a non-option these days. All the rivers are running slush at this point and air temps are dangerously cold. Your next best opportunity for a fish fix will be Thrusday when air temps are supposed to approach 40 degrees. Until then, though, time to get back to tying flies or building that rod you've been putting off.

Missouri River - January 3rd, 2004
supplied by: Yellowstone Angler
FISHING: Fair
Winter is here. The browns have already finished their spawning in the river. It is still worth getting out on the days that are warm enough, although there may not be many of those for the next few months. If you are going to get out, look for cloudy calm days, which will present the best opportunities. This time of year usually calls for fishing deeper holes with big ugly nymphs and streamers. Be especially carefull when wading this time of year. In some spots, ice will form under the surface and can make slippery rocks, ridiculously slippery. Along with this, the water is very cold and a fall could be life threatening.
On the spring creeks, there is limited dry fly fishing on warmer days when some midges are hatching and a few fish are looking up. See below for more specifics..
The Missouri, with it's tailwater characteristics, often provides consistant fishing opportunities throughout the winter. Look for midge hatches on calm, cloudy winter days. Otherwise, plan on nymphing with the standard mid-winter patterns.
The Bighorn is very similar to the Missouri this time of year. Since it comes out of a bottom release reservoir, the water temperatures are warmer during the winter, compared to freestones like the Yellowstone. This provides decent fishing on days that are warm enough to be out trying to catch a fish.

Missouri River - January 1st, 2004
supplied by: The Kingfisher
RECORDED:
32 °
FISHING: Poor
River Levels [click here]
REPORTS: This river has been fishing very similarly to The Clark Fork recently. When the wind's stayed down, there has been some fairly consistant surface activity on midges. The Dam down has been giving better fishing lately than the lower river. Fish the usual subsurface Missouri suspects (lightning bugs, pink and grey scuds, etc...) and some occasionally decent midge activity on top too. If nothing else, it's nice to get over there this time of the year to see way less people on the river. If you can get a relatively wind-free day, you can have some productive fishing.
HATCHES: Midges.
FLIES: Ray Charles, eggs, size 16 to 20 flashback p-tails, lightning bugs, RS2's, red San Juan worms.
WEATHER: Today Snow High 53°F A chance of snow then snow likely in the afternoon. Highs 25 to 30. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph shifting to the south 10 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Chance of snow 60 percent. Tonight Snow Low 26°F Snow. Snow accumulations up to a foot in the mountains and 2 to 5 inches in the valleys. Lows 5 to 10. Northwest winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts to around 40 mph in the passes. Friday Snow High 58°F Chance of snow in the afternoon. Highs 15 to 20. . . Around 10 above in the mountains. West winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of snow 30 percent. Friday Night Mostly Cloudy Low 35°F Mostly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of snow. Lows around zero. Southwest winds around 10 mph. Missouri River - December 10th, 2003
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
RECORDED:
33 °
FISHING: Good
Stream Flow Information [click here]
Flows at Holter are 3000 C.F.S. The reports from the Missouri have been good. There has been some late season dry fly fishing still on the Mo. Look for Midges and a few baetis to pop when the weather is right. If you don't see rising fish go below with nymphs. Small midge larvae, soft hackle sow bugs and san juan worms have been the best bet. You will also do well with some pink scud patterns. The river below Hauser dam has slowed a bit as the Kokanne have finished spawing in the area. The dam is reopened so you can cross over to the other side of the river if you are going to fish below Hauser.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: BH Pheasant Tail #14-18,Soft Hackle Sow Bug #16-18, San Juan Worm #10, Pink Scud #12-14, JJ's Special #4-6, Brown Bugger #2-6, Kiwi Muddler #2-6, Marabou Muddler #4-6, Mud Bugger #4-6, Olive Seaducer #2-4

Missouri River - November 7th, 2003
supplied by: Yellowstone Angler
FISHING: Good
River Levels [click here] The fishing has slowed down on the Missouri in general, but we have had good reports in the past couple of weeks from people seeing decent Baetis hatches and lots of rising fish. Anglers have commented on seeing more pods of fish now too, feeding on the Baetis duns.
Nymph fishing in the riffles has been good with a variety of PMD nymphs, PT's and small bead heads.
The browns are spawning now on the Mo, and fishing Woolly Buggers and other streamers is a good bet at this time of the year. You can do this with a floating line or by using a medium sink tip. There is a lot of moss so you don't want to get the fly down too deep. The browns seem to be more aggressive than the rainbows while they are spawning and getting them to chase down a streamer is pretty easy.
