Missouri River - August 9th, 2011
supplied by: Big R Fly Shop
RECORDED:
80 °
FISHING: Great
The Missouri seems to be fishing excellent. Cornfed was out yesterday morning and was nymphing the Crust nymph with good results... exact comment was via text message "they are eating this crust nymph pretty good." Paul and I made it out to the river in the evening a little after 7pm and had dry fly action the whole way down. Fished a double caddis (dry/emerger) and early on most fish were eating the emerger but as the night went on it didn't much matter. Walk/wade fishermen should have great success dry fly fishing with caddis in the evening right now as there are fish up all over... at least in the canyon section from Craig to Mt. Palace where we fished/drove last night. The wind did keep some of the bugs off the top of the water in the beginning but it was a very traditional dry fly evening on the Mo. Most of the caddis seemed to be smaller and dark tan or dark olive colored in size 16.

Missouri River - August 9th, 2011
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:
74 °
FISHING: Excellent
Not a lot has changed lately. The river is still fishing great, and at times, excellent. Early, late, and clouds make a big difference in your dry fly success. Nymphing produces during the bright afternoons. Caddis dominate the action, there's a few PMD's, and a few Tricos. Make your first cast count. Hoppers and Damsels hold some success especially in the canyon and on the lower river.
The upper river is busy. The very upper river is at times a circus. If you're a numbers counter, hang out and row in circles below the Dam. If you want a fly fishing experience, consider moving downstream.
Cooler temperatures in the mid to upper 70's will prevail for the remainder of the week. Clouds and afternoon thunderstorms are predicted. If the storms stay away and the clouds stick around, the circus below the Dam will be easy to resist.

Missouri River - August 3rd, 2011
supplied by: Big R Fly Shop
RECORDED:
85 °
FISHING: Excellent
8/3/11
The mighty MO is cranking along at a very pleasant 5920 cfs. Things seem right with the world as our high water has finally faded away. Fish are rising on Caddis and PMD's. Tricos are starting to pop as well. You can find fish rising all day now but as usual, you will see more in the evenings. I like a para CDC Caddis for my first shot. You should also be armed with Spent Caddis, HiVis Para PMD spinners, Buzzballs, Limestone cripples or your favorite brand of CDC Caddis. Nymphing remains strong, especially below the Dam. The Weight fly, Lil Green Machine, Zebra Midge, Silveys, and Purple lightning bugs have all been picking up fish. Hoppers and ants are occasionaly luring fish to the boat while prospecting banks and flats. Let's hope for some great hopper fishing this August.
See you out there

Missouri River - August 2nd, 2011

RECORDED:
64 °
FISHING: Excellent
The green light is on. It's true. The dry fly fishing on the Mo is excellent. Early and late hold the best promise (unless the clouds move in - then it's an all day affair). For the next week, the weatherman is on your side. High temperatures will be in the low 80's. Clouds are generally in the picture as the threat of afternoon thunderstorms continuously appears in the weather report.
Caddis, caddis, and more caddis. The spent variety are flying out of the bins. PMD's? Tricos? Where are they? They're there, but not in obvious numbers. Nymphing is good during the midday heat.

Missouri River - July 27th, 2011
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:

FISHING: Excellent
Hmmm.... so why did they raise the river and then drop it to 6,500 cfs? Who cares? The fishing is great. You can wade, but not everywhere. Dries? You still have to wait for the evening caddis. There's a few tricos and apparently a few PMD's (because they'll eat spinners).

Missouri River - July 25th, 2011
supplied by: Big R Fly Shop
RECORDED:

FISHING: Great
The Missouri River sitting around 10grand has never felt so good. Last evening there was a lot of good dry fly action to be had. Big and small fish were feeding on top. Once the wind died down and the bugs could get on the water it was game on. The Caddis, PMD's, and Bikinis were out in full force. I got wind of a couple topless University of Colorado girls up river. Of course, I picked the wrong access to put in at. There are lots of good things going on, in or around the Missouri river. It is not a bad time to get stuck in the middle of a hatch. KK
Flies:
Tilt Wing Dun
Winged Emerger
Keith’s Stagg Caddis
Missouri River Special
Center Stage Caddis
Translucent Pupa

Down goes the river to 11,200 with more cut backs in flows on the near term horizon. The river is clearing from its tea color of the last month. Up come the fish. Epic caddis hatch. Pack your bags. It's time to work your way up to the Mo.

Missouri River - July 15th, 2011
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:
70 °
FISHING: Good
You could be wading soon. At 13,500 cfs, the Missouri is still big water and not really wadeable. That's way better than the peak flow of 23,000 cfs. Inflows are only slightly below outflows. Don't expect any further decreases until next week. Watch the inflows at Toston Dam. They paint the picture of future flows below Holter Dam.
Fishing remains very good on nymphs - the wire worm, sow bugs, caddis larvae, mayfly nymphs and crawdads. Dry fly action is becoming more frequent. Have caddis dries for the evening hunt. You'll find a few heads, but we still have to wait for the river to get lower for the real deal to happen. When will that be?
We're just guessing, but we hope the river continues to drop next week. How far it drops is too tough to call.
