Missouri River - October 12th, 2006
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:    60 °   FISHING: Excellent
Heavy clouds gave way to S.U.N.S.H.I.N.E. today. It was nice out there. No worries, we still had fish on top in the afternoon. Enjoy the sunny weather while it lasts. It looks like it will last through Saturday. On Sunday, the Missouri will show its health as the clouds move in. Break out your dry flies. The river is very healthy. Conditions are excellent. Water temp: 55° F.

A wide variety of fly patterns are working (very well). Everything from small, flashy midge larva to medium-sized stimulators should be in your arsenal. Baetis dominate - especially pseudos. Finally, size 18 BWO's are in the mix. Caddis are still enjoying the nice weather. If the fish aren't on top and you can't bring yourself to fish nymphs, chuck a bugger. Stay with it. You'll likely find some large specimens.

2006 Departure Party

RECORDED:    45 °   FISHING: Excellent
Cool and at least partly cloudy weather is on tap for many days to come. At 56 - 57°F, the Missouri is brewing. You should see the steam in the morning. Pseudos galore, midges early and late, October caddis, and perhaps a few blue wings. At what water temperature will the blue wings come out in force? We'll likely find out over the next few days. You'll have to break out the layers as nighttime lows reach into the lower 20's. Brrrr. The fish can't wait nor can the bugs.

A wide variety of fly patterns are working (well). Everything from small, flashy midge larva to medium-sized stimulators should be in your arsenal. The clouds aren't thick, but they are more to the mostly instead of partly side. If you like to fish small dries, now is the time. Afternoons are pretty amazing....ask Dane Huzarsky.

RECORDED:    52 °   FISHING: Excellent
Water temp: 58° - Baetis soup will be on the menu for the rest of the week. The question is, "Will it be Blue Wings and / or will it be Pseudos?" It's going to be cold enough...... Lows will dip into the low 30's. With cooling water temps and damper conditions, the odds of a BWO fest are very good. The river is pretty steamy in the morning. The trees are yellow and the clouds are moving in. Sounds buggy.

Expect to see pseudos out in mass, midges early and late, and an afternoon caddis hatch. Hopefully, the caddis will give way to the long awaited BWO. Small nymphs, flashy midge stuff, buggers, october caddis larva, and the worm all work at times. Where you are fishing matters.

Water temp: 57° - If you picked this week to be here, you may have hit it perfectly. The cool, thick, clouds we have been waiting for are here. By Wednesday, you'll know that fall is here to stay. Nighttime lows will reach the upper 30's. It feels cold out there. The water and the fish will feel it. With cooling water temps and damper conditons, the odds of a BWO fest are very good. They have to show soon. Regardless, expect to see pseudos out in mass, midges early and late, and an afternoon caddis hatch. Small nymphs, flashy midge stuff, buggers, october caddis larva, and the worm all work at times. Where you are fishing matters.

RECORDED:    70 °   FISHING: Great
Mostly cloudy, a slight breeze out of the north, and cool temperatures will greet you on the river Wednesday. It looks golden. Thursday thru Saturday look like nice days to be outdoors. We'd rather test the clouds. You might have to wait a few days before you get to taste them again. We've seen the little green guys flying around. You might have to wait a few days before you see them on the water as well. Be patient. For now, pseudos, midges, tricos?, hoppers, streamers, midge larva, october caddis larva, the worm, ....... caddis late.

RECORDED:    65 °   FISHING: Excellent
Sunshine will brighten your weekend at least partly. The clouds were thick early this morning, but seem to be breaking up as the day progresses. Cloudiness is in the picture for the long term, but not as strong as it has been. Along with the brighter and slightly warmer conditions, you could get a southerly breeze. Although W.I.N.D. has been a factor at times, it hasn't been a huge deal. Nymphing has been a steady producer for awhile. You might have to resort to it. Buggers produce. We'll see about the dries. Bring on the clouds. Fishing is very good.

Eventually, BWO's have to turn out in force. There's a few around, but not the real deal. It feels as though it is past time. The river is cooling and will reach the magic BWO temperature soon. It's 58° now. Blanket pseudo hatches, caddis (surprising numbers), buggers, small nymphs, and midge larva will carry the day.

Sunshine will brighten your weekend. Cloudiness is in the picture, but not as strong as it has been. No worries, by Tuesday we'll be in the dark again. Along with the short-lived brighter and slightly warmer conditions coming our way, you could get a southerly breeze. It will come out of the southwest at 10 mph on Saturday and 15 mph on Sunday. Although W.I.N.D. has been a factor at times, it hasn't been a huge deal. Nymphing has been a steady producer for awhile. You might have to resort to it. Buggers produce. We'll see about the dries. Fishing is very good. Eventually, BWO's have to turn out in force. It feels like it is past time. Perhaps a 58° water temperature will help. The river is cooling quickly. It's 58° now. Blanket pseudo hatches, caddis (surprising numbers), buggers, small nymphs, and midge larva will carry the day.

The day has changed, but the picture remains the same. Here it is again - cool and cloudy. Along with it, you'll discover some awesome fishing. You might get a dose of wind, but you might not.........If not........... The section of river you fish seems to matter.

Bring a rain jacket and don't be afraid. A little rain won't hurt. The hail we had today could, however. At a buck seventy-five, you might think about picking up a pair of handwarmers.

Eventually, BWO's have to show. It's time. For now blanket pseudo hatches, caddis (surprising numbers), buggers, small nymphs, and midge larva will carry the day. The fall fish is on. As the river cools, the river will produce at even higher levels.

It will almost seem balmy today as temperatures reach into the low 60's. Air temperatures will stay in the low 60's or less throughout the week. Clouds will keep the fish on top for the week as well. Fall is definitely here. Fishing is great.

Eventually, BWO's have to show. For now, pseudos, caddis (surprising numbers), buggers, small nymphs, and midge larva will carry the day. Be ready, you never know when you will see the little green guys we are waiting for. The prolonged cool weather may hasten things. Enjoy!
