For a Missouri River Map, click here For Missouri River Flows below Holter Dam, click here BWO's, Midges, Pseudos, October Caddis, and Buggers should be in your arsenal. The weather has been a little unstable so you should be ready for most anything. Today, be ready for some W.I.N.D. If the wind doesn't materialize, you'll need a few dry flies starting at about 1:30 pm. Saturday looks great. Water temp: 55° The river from the Dam to Cascade is fishing.

Missouri River - October 4th, 2005
supplied by: The Kingfisher
FISHING: Excellent
River Levels [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here] Another cool and cloudy day with humid conditions means another hatch of baetis on the way. Winds should remain comparatively calm as well which means the Mo should be high on your list. Lots of stuff should work, but realistically, an #18 or 20 parachute Adams will likely do just fine. CDC patterns and dry emergers may be a necessity of some of the more snotty fatties. The streamer action has gotten going on the lower river recently, and the clouds should do nothing but spur this along. We've been having our best luck on the streamers with short leaders (7' 0X) on floating lines, shallower water, dead drifted with a few key twitches, using white or brown bunnies or buggers. HATCHES: Baetis. FLIES: Tricos, hopper patterns, Pt's, lightning bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc... WEATHER: Tuesday: Rain and snow likely. In the mountains...a chance of snow in the morning...then snow likely in the afternoon. Snow accumulation up to 1 inch. Total snow accumulation 2 to 5 inches. Snow level 4500 feet. Highs 40 to 45. North winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation 60 percent. Tuesday night: Mostly cloudy in the evening...then becoming partly cloudy. A slight chance of snow. In the mountains...a chance of snow in the evening...then a slight chance of snow after midnight. Areas of fog developing after midnight. Lows around 30. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation 20 percent. Wednesday: Partly cloudy. Highs around 55. Southeast winds 5 to 10 mph. Wednesday night: Partly cloudy. Lows 30 to 35. South winds 5 to 10 mph. Thursday and Thursday night: Partly cloudy. Highs 55 to 60. Lows 30 to 35. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The streamer fishing is starting to pick up over here.

Missouri River - September 29th, 2005

FISHING: Good
Stream Flow Information [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
The Missouri has fished well this week with a few hatches of Baetis, Psuedo's and Midges. The hopper fishing is still producing some surface action and with bright sunny weather hoppers will be your best bet for getting fish on top. Nymphing has been producing more numbers of fish for anglers this week. Small nymphs along with scuds and sow bugs are always a good bet for catching numbers of fish. Streamer fishing has been fair and you will want to stick with bright colored flies on the sunny days. White and Tan has been producing well on the sunny days while olive and black has been best on cloudy days. Fly Pattern Suggestions: Parachute Hopper #8-12, Molly Hopper # 10-14, Parachute Flying Ant # 14-16, Cinnamon Ant # 14-16, Parchute BWO # 14-16, BWO Hackle Stacker # 14-16, BWO Comparadun # 16-18, CDC BWO Emerger # 14-16, Griffith's Gnat # 16-18, Mother Shucker # 18-20, Soft Hackle Sow Bug # 14-16, Pink Scud # 14-16, pheasant tail # 14-16, Expoxy Back Baetis # 16-18, Disco Midge # 16-18, Zebra Midge # 16-18, San Juan Worm # 12.

Missouri River - September 28th, 2005
supplied by: The Kingfisher
FISHING: Great
River Levels [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here] Sunny and warm today with a breezy afternoon on tap. In the sun, it'll be mostly back to the tandem nymph rigs that include pink and gray scuds, RS2s, lightning bugs, red san juan worms, etc... There will be some fish looking up for pseudos, tricos early (spinners later), hoppers and a few mahoganies. Some pods will seem indifferent to the sun and will feed on the surface consistently while most of the fish in the river will be staying deeper. White and natural colored bunnies down deep have been doing evil things to BIG fish recently. The lower stretches seem to be the best with these right now, but we've taken some really nice fish as high up as Prickly Pear. HATCHES: tricos, psuedos, caddis, terrestrials. FLIES: Tricos, hopper patterns, Pt's, lightning bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc... WEATHER: Today: Sunny. Southwest wind 14 mph. High 72. Tonight: Partly cloudy. Southwest wind 13 mph. Low 46. Thursday: Partly cloudy. Southwest wind 26 gusting to 38 mph. High 79. Thursday Night: Partly cloudy. Southwest wind 20 gusting to 37 mph. Low 48. Friday: Mostly cloudy. High 71. Friday Night: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Probability of measurable precipitation 30 percent. Low 40. Saturday: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Probability of measurable precipitation 30 percent. High 64. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The streamer fishing is starting to pick up over here.

Missouri River - September 22nd, 2005

FISHING: Good
River Levels [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here] Looks like good conditions on tap for today. Partly cloudy skies with warmer temperatures should have the fish looking up most of the day. Expect to have tricos early and then get out your pseudo and hopper box. The unweighted midge emergers in the backwaters is still one of our best fish producers lately, but shallow droppers under crickets or hoppers later in the day should work for you too. The fishing over here hasn't been easy lately, but if you have a few tricks up your sleeve, it's not too bad! HATCHES: tricos, psuedos, caddis, terrestrials. FLIES: Tricos, hopper patterns, Pt's, lightning bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc... WEATHER: Today: Partly cloudy. Highs 60 to 70. ..55 to 60 in the mountains. North winds 5 to 10 mph. Tonight: Partly cloudy. Lows 35 to 40. Northeast winds 5 to 10 mph...shifting to the south up to 10 mph after midnight. Thursday: Partly cloudy. Highs 60 to 70. ..55 to 60 in the mountains. West winds 10 to 20 mph. Thursday night: Mostly cloudy. Lows 30 to 40. Northwest winds 5 to 15 mph. Friday: Mostly cloudy with rain and mountain snow likely. Snow accumulation up to 3 inches. Snow level 6000 feet. Highs 40 to 50. North winds 5 to 15 mph. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This is a great time of year to watch carefully and pick off subtly feeding fatties in virtually inches of water. Good stuff!

FISHING: Good
Stream Flow Information [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
he Missouri has been fishing well and the weather will dictate what fly patterns will be most productive. If the sun is out and the morning is not real cold the tricos have been strong. If the weather is cool and cloudy look for hatches of Baetis and Psuedo Cleons. The Psuedos have been hatching most days, and have not been affected by weather like the other to mayfly hatches. On the sunny afternoons the fish have been looking for Hoppers and Crickets a bit. Nymphing has been productive for most anglers and is always the fall back if nothing else is taking place. Streamers have started to produce results as well, especially on the cool overcast days. Fly Pattern Suggestions: Parachute Hopper #8-12, Molly Hopper # 10-14, Parachute Flying Ant # 14-16, Cinnamon Ant # 14-16, Hackle Stacker PMD # 14-18, Quill Body PMD # 14-18, PMD Paracripple # 14-18, Parachute Hares Ear # 14-18, CDC PMD Emerger # 14-18, Killer May # 14-18, Split Case PMD # 14-18, Spent Partridge Caddis # 14-16, Elk Hair Caddis # 14-16, Parachute Caddis # 14-16, Goddard Caddis # 14-16, Mangy Caddis # 14-16, Electric Caddis # 14-16, Triple Wing Trico # 18-20, Double wing spinner # 20-22, CDC Trico # 18-20, CDC Hackle Stacker Trico # 18-20.

Missouri River - September 19th, 2005
supplied by: The Kingfisher
FISHING: Good
River Levels [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here] Should be good if the wind stays down. They're calling for gusts up to 30 mph this afternoon. You can decide what that means. If things remain reasonable over here, you can expect a later in the morning trico hatch with pseudos, mahoganies and baetis by the afternoon. Black cricket patterns have recently proven very interesting to a number of finicky fish and prospecting with a dropper under this variation might be worthwhile. The streamer fishing is ok but not red hot. Look for your best fishing to be midday at this point.
HATCHES: tricos, psuedos, caddis, terrestrials. FLIES: Tricos, hopper patterns, Pt's, lightning bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc... WEATHER: Today: Partly cloudy. Warmer. Highs 70 to 80. ..65 to 70 in the mountains. West winds 10 to 20 mph. Gusts up to 30 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear. Lows around 40. Southwest winds 5 to 15 mph with gusts to 25 mph. Tuesday: Partly cloudy. Highs 70 to 80. ..65 to 70 in the mountains. West winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Tuesday night: Partly cloudy. Lows 35 to 40. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Wednesday: Partly cloudy. Highs 60 to 70. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Fall colors are obvious. The trees are turning color too. Keep an eye on the weather. When it's right, you'll have steady top water action - some of the best of the year. Local Bridge Web Camera Today, it looks like you could get a dose of W.I.N.D. Great Falls Weather Today...Partly cloudy. Windy. Highs 75 to 80...65 to 75 in the mountains. Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph. Tonight...Mostly clear. Lows 40 to 45. Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Tuesday...Partly cloudy. Highs 70 to 80. Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph. Tuesday Night...Partly cloudy. Lows 40 to 45. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Wednesday...Partly cloudy. Highs 65 to 75. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Helena Weather Today: Partly cloudy. West wind 18 mph. High 78. Tonight: Partly cloudy. West wind 13 mph. Low 44. Tuesday: Partly cloudy. West wind 14 mph. High 80. . Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy. Northwest wind 9 mph. Low 46. . Wednesday: Partly cloudy. High 73. Midges, Lots of Pseudos, Tricos and a few Hoppers are still on the agenda. Tricos will show their last hurrah as it warms up early in the week. Hoppers still hold life? Tiny nymphs rule. So do big nymphs called Wooly Buggers. The push of water we received from the recent rain may have a few brown fish thinking. Fishing reports are generally good. Are you ready?

Missouri River - September 12th, 2005
supplied by: The Kingfisher
FISHING: Great
River Levels [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here] Cooler weather with a good chance of rain on the Mo today. The lack of serious wind that they're calling for will improve conditions considerably. Should be good stuff. Look for pods of fatties up and rising in all the usual places. You may have to go down to 6X on the single fatties feeding in very shallow water, but in general, you should be able to get away with 5X. Bring a variety of smaller mayfly offerings from #20 trico patterns up to generic mayfly profiles up to about a 14. Sometimes the fish will respond to radically oversized stuff, but lately they've been pretty exacting. There are still some caddis kicking around but in the cloudy, colder weather, they've been less relevant. That'll surely change when things get sunny again for a whole day or two. Short of wind becoming an issue, the Mo should be some fun stuff today. HATCHES: tricos, psuedos, caddis, terrestrials. FLIES: Tricos, hopper patterns, Pt's, lightning bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc... WEATHER: Today: Partly cloudy early in the morning...then becoming mostly cloudy. Isolated showers and mountain snow showers in the morning...then scattered showers and mountain show showers in the afternoon. Highs 55 to 65. ..45 to 50 in the mountains. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation 50 percent. Tonight: Mostly cloudy. A 50 percent chance of rain...a 50 percent chance of rain and snow in the mountains. Lows 35 to 40. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation 50 percent. Tuesday: Mostly cloudy. A chance of showers in the morning.. Then a slight chance of showers in the afternoon. Highs 55 to 65. ..50 to 55 in the mountains. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation 40 percent. Tuesday night: Mostly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain showers. Lows 35 to 40. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Wednesday: Partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain showers. Highs 60 to 70. West winds 5 to 15 mph. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Flow on the Mo today below Holter is 4160 with a temp of 61 degrees.

Missouri River - September 8th, 2005
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Good
Stream Flow Information [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
Fishing Report: Not much change on the Missouri in the past month. Tricos and Psuedos are providing the bulk of the aquatic hatch activity. Hoppers, ants and damsel flies are providing some other suface activity during non hatch days. The Trico's have been very sporadic this year with the hatch blowing up one day and not showing the next. Hopper fishing has been the most consistent surface action for most anlger who have been on the water. Nymph fishing has been the go to on days when the fish are not looking up. Nymphing has been best on the section close to the dam. Scuds, Mayflys and Sow bugs have been consistent producers if you head below the surface. The better hopper fishing has been on the middle and lower reaches of the river. Look to see some fall baetis hatches kick into gear within the next couple of weeks. Fly Pattern Suggestions: Parachute Hopper #8-12, Molly Hopper # 10-14, Parachute Flying Ant # 14-16, Cinnamon Ant # 14-16, Hackle Stacker PMD # 14-18, Quill Body PMD # 14-18, PMD Paracripple # 14-18, Parachute Hares Ear # 14-18, CDC PMD Emerger # 14-18, Killer May # 14-18, Split Case PMD # 14-18, Spent Partridge Caddis # 14-16, Elk Hair Caddis # 14-16, Parachute Caddis # 14-16, Goddard Caddis # 14-16, Mangy Caddis # 14-16, Electric Caddis # 14-16, Triple Wing Trico # 18-20, Double wing spinner # 20-22, CDC Trico # 18-20, CDC Hackle Stacker Trico # 18-20.
