Missouri River - April 27th, 2011
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:    40 °   FISHING: Fair
Snowpack in the Missouri River Basin has increased to 135% of average. In preparation for the anticipated spring snowmelt runoff, releases out of Canyon Ferry Dam will be increased as follows:

At 1600 hour on Wednesday, April 27, 2011:

Increase releases through the river outlet gates to 1,000 cfs.
Maintain releases through the spillway gates at 0 cfs.
Increase turbine releases to maintain releases for Helena Valley Project at 315 cfs (150 cfs pumped to Helena Valley and 165 cfs discharged to the Missouri River).
Increase average daily release to the Missouri River to 7,110 cfs.
Increase average total release from Canyon Ferry to 7,260 cfs.

That's still not a bad flow. Now, however, a boat makes all the difference. The increased flows seem to be due to an increased snowpack runoff prediction - up 5%. It's good to see the river managers adapting to the current situation. Once things settle down from the recent adjustment, the fishing report will be the same.

Midges early and late. Clouds or the lack of sunlight make a big difference in your dry fly success. Nymphs on sunny days will get a few fish. Getting to the bottom is more of a challenge. The wire worm and split shot don't have to be used, yet. Fire bead sow bugs, pink junk, and traditional bwo nymphs work. Black midge larvae is a staple. We get spotty reports with streamers, but the river is simply calling for it. An increase in water temps wouldn't hurt a thing.

The Bureau of Reclamation announced a small increase in river flows yesterday.  We saw the river go from 6,500 to around 6,700 cfs.  The announced increase seemed small so we were skeptical.  So far, the announcement has proven correct.   Of note, the Bureau of Reclamation stated, "Snowpack in the Missouri River Basin has increased to 131% of average. Preliminary forecasts indicate the May-July inflow into Canyon Ferry is estimated to be 133% of average. In preparation for the anticipated spring snowmelt runoff, releases out of Canyon Ferry Dam will be increased to 6,655 cfs".

Figuring out the fishing for the next couple of months will have to include a roster of water flow variables.  We're going to see some high water.  When and how much are anybody's guess.  Inflows to Canyon Ferry are at 5,190 cfs.  Outflows are 6,740 cfs so the river managers are still pulling down Canyon Ferry Lake (our flood control pool).  Snowpack is 110 - 130% above normal. Will it rain?  Will it get hot?  You can drive yourself crazy thinking about it.

Forget about trying to predict near term river flows.  Right now, the river is at a good level for both nymphs and streamers.  Dry fly enthusiasts still have the river working for them when the weather cooperates.  With few exceptions, the weather forecast calls for clouds all the way through the weekend.  High temperatures will be in the upper 40's to low 50's.  You'll at least have the clouds on your side.  With 43° water temperature, you should have a raft of midges and sufficient baetis to get the fish looking up.

Now, what will next week bring?  Enjoy the river now before....  Bring a boat just in case.

Well guys, it's 29 Degrees and snowing. I have about 6" of wet snow on my car...... I'm sure fishing might be ok if you're going to brave the weather. We are expecting some nice weather this weekend and then mid 50's through the next week. There is a good chance a lot of the rivers might get off color before the end of the week. We have hot chocolate and coffee in the shop.

Let's see.....it's April 21.  Sunshine, a cooling 15 mph breeze out of the east and highs in the mid-80's will greet you in Key West tomorrow.  You'll have the same weather all the way through Easter.

The same is true for Craig, MT, except the highs will be in the mid 40's, wind will come out of the north to make things even cooler, snow on the verge of being heavy rain is presently falling and is expected to continue through the weekend.  The fishing is worth the barrier that Mother Nature continues to throw our way.

Midges are thick, BWO's are coming on, the river is perfect for streamer fishing and nymphs continue to produce.  There's plenty of variety to keep you occupied.  So far, our tributaries continue to run clear.  We'll have to see what happens with the wetness coming our way.  Don't put away your ski clothing quite yet.  You might need it for fishing the river this weekend.

Warmer water temps are getting the bugs going.  Midges, a few Blue Wings and a few Skwalas.  Along with the increased bugs, you'll find increased surface activity.  Early and late hold the most promise for dries.  Nymphs work most of the time.  If you can't get them on nymphs or dries, there's still one more avenue to explore - buggers........For some, skip the nymphs.

Increased flows have started to make their way below Holter Dam.  At 6,500 cfs, you can still wade, but having a boat will prove very handy.  We've hit the magic 42° mark.  Like clockwork, the river is turning on.  Since our snowpack hasn't begun to melt, we should see decent flows throughout May.  Canyon Ferry Lake has a long ways to go before its even close to full.  Still, no promises on flows.

You can feel the anticipation in Craig.  All the businesses are gearing up for a very promising season on the Mo.  Tight Lines.....

Cornfed, Jerimiah, and I fished the Mo today from Stickney Creek to Prewitt Creek starting at about 11.  Fishing was fairly consistent today, and we caught fish on streamers, dries, and nymphs.

Nymphing was extremely productive and the few times we stopped to nymph a run fish were eating very well.  We had great results on the new black zebra colored Tailwater Charlie in #18.  We also caught fish on the standard winter patterns (try hot worms, Czech nymphs, hot head patterns, etc) and we also did well with some new home spun baetis patterns.

Streamer fishing was fairly consistent as well.  We landed some nice browns on the Late Night with Wanda, Ghostbuster (large size), and Yellow Galloup’s Dungeon streamer patterns.

This was the best surface action of the year that I’ve seen despite the wind.  Midge clusters on the banks and rock edges and eddies were fairly thick… some BWO’s were mixed in the surface action.  We landed fish on the Donatello Cripple BWO pattern, as well as a few fish on some Skwala dries (sz 10).    I think more fish were keyed in to the midges, however they were eating the larger bugs almost every time the wind would allow a reasonable presentation so there was no reason to go smaller today.

Hopefully the weather heats up as the fishing does…

The fellas are back from Simms Ice Out today… Hot Morning Light coffee will be fresh brewed in the shop all week… Stop in and see some of our new bugs!

If you want to fish dry flies, the river is starting to come into its own.  You will not get all day dry fly fishing, but if you fish early and late, you're likely to see fish up on midges.

While the river is warming to the point where you can see fish rise, the weather will remind you of winter.  Oops, almost forgot.  Spring doesn't start in Montana until June.  On Saturday, we'll have clouds and highs in the low 40's.  Sunday will be a little cooler.  By Monday, highs will only be in the 30's.  Oops, almost forgot again.  You can't count on a weather forecast in Montana.  See ya on the river.  The Trout Shop is open 7 days a week for the rest of the fishing season.

Justin and I floated from Prewett to Cascade. We stopped and nymphed a few times. We did good with stones, scuds, Disco worms tan,  gray little green machines, and center stage BWO. We threw streamers mostly all day long. We didn't find any thing really constistant. Shiny and bright flies seemed to do better.  We did best on smaller Yellow yummies, skiddish smolts,  and sparkle minnows. Later in the day, as the high sun went down, the fishing really picked up. It was another awesome day mid 50's with no wind. Its strarting to feel like spring!!! Justin is out on the water right now we will see how he does today.

RECORDED:    47 °   FISHING: Fair
Fishing reports have steadily improved as the water starts to warm.  We're almost in the 40's.  In a day or two, we should be there.  Warmer air temperatures in the 50's will help lead the way.

Nymphing continues to lead the way.  With the river flows at 5500 cfs, you'll need a little weight to get your bugs where the fish are.  When you do, watch for even the slightest movement of your indicator.  The water is cold, the fish are a little sluggish and their takes are often hard to see.  Stay alert.

If you want to see a carnival, head up to Holter Lake on the weekends.  The rainbows are cruising the banks while wall to wall anglers seek their next meal.  While it may not be the fishing you want, it is amusing.  The rainbows are huge.

Enjoy Montana!  It's getting very nice outside.

The weather was percect! It was one of those days were you almost don't even care about how the river is fishing. From what I had to fish in yesterday (freezing wind burnt face)....... to today ( no wind sun burnt face) it was awesome. We streamer fished most the the day and picked up few fish on skiddish smolts, Olive MT mouthwashes, JJ's, and few flashes on big nasty stuff. We threw a skwala later in the day.... Nothing. Found a live one though. Lots of people out enjoying the day.
