Should be good if the wind stays down. They're calling for gusts up to 30 mph this afternoon. You can decide what that means. If things remain reasonable over here, you can expect a later in the morning trico hatch with pseudos, mahoganies and baetis by the afternoon. Black cricket patterns have recently proven very interesting to a number of finicky fish and prospecting with a dropper under this variation might be worthwhile. The streamer fishing is ok but not red hot. Look for your best fishing to be midday at this point.

HATCHES: tricos, psuedos, caddis, terrestrials. FLIES: Tricos, hopper patterns, Pt's, lightning bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc... Midges, Lots of Pseudos, Tricos and a few Hoppers are still on the agenda. Tricos will show their last hurrah as it warms up early in the week. Hoppers still hold life? Tiny nymphs rule. So do big nymphs called Wooly Buggers. The push of water we received from the recent rain may have a few brown fish thinking.

Fishing reports are generally good. Are you ready?

Cooler weather with a good chance of rain on the Mo today. The lack of serious wind that they're calling for will improve conditions considerably. Should be good stuff. Look for pods of fatties up and rising in all the usual places. You may have to go down to 6X on the single fatties feeding in very shallow water, but in general, you should be able to get away with 5X. Bring a variety of smaller mayfly offerings from #20 trico patterns up to generic mayfly profiles up to about a 14. Sometimes the fish will respond to radically oversized stuff, but lately they've been pretty exacting. There are still some caddis kicking around but in the cloudy, colder weather, they've been less relevant. That'll surely change when things get sunny again for a whole day or two. Short of wind becoming an issue, the Mo should be some fun stuff today.

HATCHES: tricos, psuedos, caddis, terrestrials.

FLIES: Tricos, hopper patterns, Pt's, lightning bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc...

Chance of precipitation 50 percent. Tuesday: Mostly cloudy. A chance of showers in the morning.. Then a slight chance of showers in the afternoon. Highs 55 to 65. ..50 to 55 in the mountains. Fishing Report: Not much change on the Missouri in the past month. Tricos and Psuedos are providing the bulk of the aquatic hatch activity. Hoppers, ants and damsel flies are providing some other suface activity during non hatch days. The Trico's have been very sporadic this year with the hatch blowing up one day and not showing the next. Hopper fishing has been the most consistent surface action for most anlger who have been on the water. Nymph fishing has been the go to on days when the fish are not looking up. Nymphing has been best on the section close to the dam. Scuds, Mayflys and Sow bugs have been consistent producers if you head below the surface. The better hopper fishing has been on the middle and lower reaches of the river. Look to see some fall baetis hatches kick into gear within the next couple of weeks.

Sunny and warmer with little to no wind. That'll be a nice change of pace. It'll be one of the few times you'll ever hear, "you shouldn't have been here yesterday."! Today's the day it looks like. Expect good trico and micro caddis activity early in the day with good hopper and pseudo action after about noon. There are still some evening caddis out and about, but many of the fish on the surface later in the day are looking for mayfly spinners. Protected runs that have little algae in them will produce big for you with the standard Missouri nymph rigs that include size 14 to 18 pink scuds, lightning bugs, RS2s, etc...

Look for some action with remnant PMDs, and pseudos as well as hoppers and ants and tricos in the morning. The sunny but cooler weather should help the trico prospects. The small caddis that're coming off each morning have been getting lots of attention from the fatties feeding in the shallows. Don't overlook these when fishing your tricos. Hopper/dropper rigs have been effective as well if you stay out of the main currents carrying the majority of drifting algae.

The Mighty Mo continues to be a day to day fishery. The dry fly fishing will be dependant on the severity of the trico hatch. It has been very strong one day and almost non existent the next. Psuedo cleons have been hatching as well during the mid morning hours and they can bring the fish up to the surface as well. Hopper fishing has been good during sunny days. If the clouds move in try a streamer fished against the rip rap banks below Craig. PP&L power company has scheduled some maintance on the reservoirs above which was going to see an increase and than a decrease in flows on the river starting September 1st. This work has been changed and they are going to be using water from Canyon ferry instead of Holter and Hauser to accomplish the work. This is good news because flows should stay pretty stable below Holter. They were scheduled to be raised considerably and than dropped substantially if they were going to draw down the water from Hauser and Holter. We should see pretty stable flows since they are going to do the work using Canyon Ferry instead.

With all the rivers in the Missoula area seeing high afternoon water temps and less than stellar fishing, the Mo is looking particularly good these days. The nymphing has been good lately with the standard Missouri fare continuing to be productive. Crowds have been very hit and miss with some days very busy and then the next day, for no particular reason, virtually deserted. Pink and grey scuds in 12 to 16, lighting bugs in 14 to 18, red san juan worms in 10s or 8s, olive p-tails and beerheads in 16s and 18s. For the dries have small royal wulffs, size 10 hoppers and yellow to rusty size 14 to 18 comparaduns have all been working well. Look for the evening caddis to light things up for you, especially with dragging emergers.

HATCHES: tricos, psuedos, caddis, terrestrials.

FLIES: brown, yellow or white buggers, size 8 to 10 hopper patterns, Pt's, lightning bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc...

WEATHER: Today: Areas of smoke through the day. Isolated showers and thunderstorms through the day. Mostly cloudy early in the morning then becoming partly cloudy. Some thunderstorms may produce gusty winds. Highs in the upper 80s to mid 90s. West winds 10 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Tonight: Slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the evening. Areas of smoke through the night. Partly cloudy. Lows in the upper 40s to mid 50s. West winds 10 to 20 mph in the evening. Tuesday: Areas of smoke in the morning. Slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Partly cloudy. Highs in the mid 80s to lower 90s. West winds around 15 mph in the afternoon. Tuesday night: Partly cloudy in the evening then clearing. Lows in the mid 40s to lower 50s. Wednesday: Slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny. Highs in the mid 80s to lower 90s. West winds around 15 mph in the afternoon.

Fishing Report: Flows have been very stable on the Missouri and the fishing has been good. Early morning and late evening will provide the best options for fishing dry flies. Trico's and PMD's are hatching in the morning hours. Both of these hatches will see different magnitudes of bugs from day to day so if you are there for a few days you may see a day of real strong hatch activity followed by a day of slow hatch activity. In the evenings you will see some good caddis activity unless the wind picks up and blows the bugs away. The best caddis action will be just prior to last light. During the middle of the day you can have some success fishing small hoppers and flying ant patterns. Trailing a bead head dropper off the back can also provide some good results. As a last resort, put on a strike indicator with a scud and sow bug dropper and dredge the fish out of the depths. Nymphing is usually a productive method on the Mo but since we are in the heat of the summer dry fly action I always try dries first. We have plenty of time to look at indicators during the spring, fall and winter.
