FISHING: Great
San Marino Inlet is now OPEN! For the first time in several years a fresh surge of sea water as poured into the Maria Linda River which flows by the Buena Vista Sportfishing lodge. The inlet will allow us to provide room side service with direct access to the Pacific Ocean from the largest fishing lodge in San Jose, Guatemala!
Captain Joe Riley, several marlin and sailfish along with his entourage, are celebrating this milestone. More information and pictures to come!

FISHING: Fair
Jeff Ciuba and his group enjoyed there stay in Guatemala in spite of the less than stellar fishing. In addition to enjoying the Central American summer weather pool side they visited the beautiful city of Antigua, Guatemala. While the fishing may have been considered slow by local standards collectively they have seen over 50 bill fish during there stay and feed themselves with fresh caught grouper, snapper, and Mia Mia. Overall I’m sure they’ll agree it was a nice break from watching the cold winter winds blow along the shores of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Meanwhile Captain Jody Elswick is chomping at the bit to be the first to run the newly rebuilt San Marino Inlet in the Monkey Business. We are expecting it to open any day as the earth movers continue to cut away at what little remaining sand there is between the ocean and the sound. If all goes well we should be able to pick up our guests dockside at BuenaVistaSportfishing before the end of the season.
Captain Joe Riley and his band of seasoned anglers are descending on the lodge this coming week. We can assure you that the stories will be just as good as the fishing. Come join us!

FISHING: Good
When it’s tough the tough get going! The bite off shore Porta San Jose Guatemala has been tough to say the least. The fishing continues to be sporadic with a few areas of water yielding a better bill fish bite than others while the meat is always present. Captain Jody Elswick on the Monkey Business decided to take matters into his own hands. He created some rather attractive fish habitat not to far from port and fished it for the day. They ended up seeing over 30 sails within a mile of the “new” structure. They ended up releasing 8 sails. Keep in mind they spent some time teaching a first timer how to come tight using a circle hook. Long drop back now. OK put it in gear and remember DON”T set the hook!

Mixing it up in Guatemala
This Guatemala fishing report is for the week ending
February 16th 2009 and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company
operating out of the new Pez Vela Marina.
This is the time of the season for billfishing in Guatemala when we expect to have some predictability. Our clients return on a regular basis at the same time each year, expecting the same results. That’s what January to March down here is supposed to deliver.
Good concentrations of billfish nice warm days and calm seas – and consistent action throughout the fishing day.
We are now approximately half way through the peak season, and we have seen hardly any of this – we have had days raising up to 80 sailfish, we have had days raising only (high !) single digits. We have raised Blue Marlin and Black Marlin – we have even been seeing plenty of tuna. Variety is usually a good thing, but normally we get variety on top of a strong and consistent billfish bite. The weather has been similarly inconsistent, with cold fronts (yes …cold fronts !!!! ……in Guatemala…………) coming through on a fairly regular basis, and pushing the fishing action out from 30 miles to 50 miles.
The fishing this past week has slowed down from the fishing frenzy that we experienced in late January, and the blue water has pushed out again to about 40 miles. We have been consistently raising 10-15 billfish per day on the back of (another) cold front, but it does seem to be settling down to a more predictable pattern
We welcomed Mike Northcott down late in January, followed by Linda Gould for her return trip. I mention this because the last person we had taking a swim with the fish was Cindy Garrison, who clearly couldn’t control her excitement at bringing a beautiful pacific sail to the transom – and promptly donned a mask and hiked over the side to take pictures and carouse with nature. Obviously Mike………followed in quick succession with Linda Gould’s group – were inspired by this, as they took the first dip of this season with the billfish and got some great pictures.
In some ways this is better than classic “catch and release” as the fish forgoes the last manic dash for freedom and instead is released gently in the water – but on the other hand if you have ever seen one of these creatures lit up in hues of blue and leaping towards the stern (and angler) with a glint in its eye and aiming its bill at the quarry……..you may pause to question the wisdom of being in the same proximity.
Not a tactic that we would endorse, and neither would our insurance…..but great pictures nonetheless.

FISHING: Good
Captain Riley reports that he and the Sherman group of 4 had an exciting day of fly fishing on board the Perla Del Mare. After raising a few sails to the teasers they ended up 3 for 4. To top off the day the Perla raised a Black Marlin. They hooked, fought and released the approximately 350 lb fish on conventional tackle within 10 minutes. Let’s hope there luck is even better today.

Tim and Kim Miller escaped the winter cold and spent 4 days at the lodge this past week. They both enjoyed the calming weather and caught there first pacific sails on the Monkey Business. Kim with the support of Susy Elswick, perfected her shopping skills in the beautiful and ancient capitol city of Antigua.
While fishing was still a bit slow they managed to make up for that by relaxing pool side with temperatures in the 80’s and enjoying the Guatemalan summer.

FISHING: Fair
BuenaVistaSportfishing welcomes guest Captain Joe Riley on board. He has joined us for an extended stay running the Fat Cat. Capt. Riley, Gary and Mark Sherman, Jim McGuire and Joe Mustari ventured off shore yesterday to find improving sea conditions and aggressive schools of gaffer dolphins. After chopping up a few teasers they boated enough to feed the lodge. The sailfish where a little less cooperative as they managed to raise a few hot ones to the teasers. While putting on the typical Pacific sailfish show Guatemala style the group was unable to “land” one on there first day out. They’ve got the weekend to make that happen. BTW they are trying them on the fly.
Meanwhile the rest of the fleet encountered similar conditions trolling. The exception was a boat that chose to bait fish. They went 2 for 3 on Blue Marlin and released 6 sails. The season to date has been up and down with the unusual weather conditions. In spite of that everyone who has visited us has been able to relax and enjoy the comforts of our lodge. Sitting pool side with a fresh fruit cocktail and sharing fishing stories while enjoying Guatemalan cuisine is better than watching the cold north wind blow. Come join us.

FISHING: Good
When it comes to most any kind of fishing most all of us are familiar with having too “pay some dues”. Captain Bahrami, Ray Rhodes, Buba Bulter and John Rogers may have done that and then some. Upon there arrival last week mother nature had some weather to hand out as they sat out a waxing moon wind pool side at Buena Vista. When the wind and the seas calmed, they ventured out in search of sails. The first two days brought some success as they trolled far and found sailfish in calmer waters.
Wisely deciding to stay an extra day Captain Bahrami lead the sailfish catch and release count by trips end. As a team they had collectively seen 48 sails and caught 16. The real excitement came on the third day when Ray stuck a spunky 250lb+ Blue Marlin. While it was released it did not leave without causing some damage to the boat and pleasure for the group. Kayvan and his entourage will have some stories to tell once they are stateside. Check out the head shot of the mate and the Blue One here.

FISHING: Fair
This past week as been unusually windy in Central America. So much so the San Jose, Guatemala fleet was kept in port for at least two days. Those that did venture out where met by long swells and a chop not conducive to the best bite possible. The weather and the fishing have begun to improve and more boats are venturing out to find the fish from 10 – 20 miles out. Joe Riley ventured out on the Fat Cat Sunday and managed to find a knot of birds on scattered sails and dolphin. The rest of the fleet joined him as they picked on a few fish also recovering from the rough seas.
The forecast along with the fishing is expected to return to normal this week. The Miller and Sherman group are fishing with us. We’re sure Joe will find his groove and the seas will behave as well as the fish. Check back with us to see how that story goes! www.buenavistasportfishing.com

FISHING: Great
The fish where very cooperative on Sunday and Monday but the weather was not. It was a bit choppy. The main body of sailfish ended up 10 – 17 miles off the beach with boats seeing 20 - 30 fish to the teasers. The average catch per boat being 10 – 20. The Fat Cat ventured out for Rooster to no avail as they were quickly lured away to the sail bite just off shore. The half days they spent trolling for bill fish produced a few doubles and a triple plus some meat in the box.
Captain Kayvan Bahrimi and returning guest Ray Rhodes will test the waters this week along with Phil Butler and John Rogers. Captain Joe Riley will also join in on the fun by weeks end. Regardless of the fish count there will be some good times to share. We’ve got room and boats available. Escape the winter and join us at www.buenavistasportfishing.com
