Pacific Coast of Guatemala - January 7th, 2007
supplied by: Great Sailfishing
RECORDED:    82 °   FISHING: Fair
This Guatemala fishing report is for the week ending January 7th2007 and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing
Company operating out of the new Pez Vela
Marina.
This fishing report is slow in arriving, as the fish have beenslow in biting so far.Maybe they enjoyed the New Year festivities too much, maybethey are just starting the year out slowly………..maybe it was the moon shining full in the sky – but whatever it was, the fishing has been slow at least by Guatemalan standards. The Noweryparty had 3 raises on their first day fishing with us – one of the sailscaught was enormous – about the largest that Cap’n Marven has seen in 15 years fishing the waters, estimated at > 135lbs.Michael Stough fishing with us also on the 35ft Strike was having a slow day flyfishing………..right up to the point that a Blue Marlinsurfaced on the naked ballyhoo trailing on the flat line. He had anopportunity for a couple of casts with his favorite fly, but the Blue had the smell of bait already – so he pitched the pre-rigged bellybait on the 50lb tackle. This immediately caught the attention of thefish and the fight was on. For the next 2 ½ hours Michael, the Marlinand the boat each tried to outmaneuver each other through guile and stamina. Eventually the boat and Michael succeeded in bringingthe marlin to the side of the boat and touch the leader. The mates swung into action and held on to the 350lb Blue for as long as possible to revive her at the side of the boat forcing water through hergills until she flicked her massive tail and swam away….tired but ready for another day.Fishing seems to be picking up this week as the moon wanes, withreports of double digit raises and more Marlin showing. If you have yet to fish with us, you have the opportunity to see justhow good the fishing is by watching Cindy Garrison on ESPN2 at 9.30am this weekend (January 14th). This is the second of the episodesThat she filmed with us just after Thanksgiving last year. There areSome great shots where she jumps into the water with the sailfish atthe boat – only to realize that it was one of a pod of about 6 others that had trailed it to the boat. She came down with her sister – and it didn’t take long for her sister to catch her first ever sailfish……anothergreat memory of Guatemala fishing ! Contact us at :  enquiries@greatsailfishing.com  or to register for our

RECORDED:    84 °   FISHING: Good
This Guatemala fishing report is for the week ending December
30th 2006 and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing
Company operating out of the new Pez Vela
Marina.
Well we allowed the fish a break to enjoy their Christmas – butstarted back straight away fishing on the 26th. They did seem a little sluggish after the festivities, but the sight of fresh ballyhoojust proved too much ……….and the bite showed as soon as we hit Bluewater at 12-15 miles from the dock. We welcomed the Lundgren party, and they started their trip with 9 nice Sailfish in the boat on “Boxing Day” as it is known in the UK. The weather was perfect with a light wind and enough ofa chop on the water to make the teasers jump and hop in an animated way. You can see more pix from last weeks fishing here : http://www.greatsailfishing.com/en/weeklyfishing.htm The weather and the bite improved as the Lundgrens continuedtheir trip – bringing 10 to the boat on their second day………and then really heating up with 16 caught on their third and final day. There has been more and more bait showing in recent days, and we are hopeful of a run of Blue Marlin as we progress through the full moon………….watch this space and we will report if/when it happens ! We wish all our clients, past, present and future a Happy New Year Our very Best wishes : Les, Carlos, Kevin & Jim Contact us at :  enquiries@greatsailfishing.com  or to register for our

Pacific Coast of Guatemala - December 24th, 2006
supplied by: Great Sailfishing
RECORDED:    83 °   FISHING: Great
This Guatemala fishing report is for the week ending December
24th 2006 and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing
Company operating out of the new Pez Vela
Marina.
This week saw the continuation of blue skies, calm seas and anever improving bite both offshore and inshore. We reported last week on a few days that the Sinclair party fished and were rewarded with raises in the 40-75 range each day. This snapof the Cap’ns log shows the results of another fine days fishing with75/66/45 raises, bites and catches respectively. It is certainly theSeason to be Merry down here !!.........not just fishing, but catching as well !!  As we came into the New Moon the fishing stayed close in at 12-30 miles and the Blue Water was apparent as close as 15miles. The inshore fishing has been strong as well – the return of theCommercial shrimping boats has given the fleet the ability to focus on areas where there are bound to be fish – Amberjack until your arms are sore, as well as a decent showing of schoolyellowfin right off the beach. There have been some Roosterfishcaught in the melee as well, mostly being caught on fast trolledRappalas. We at The Great Sailfishing Company would like to take the opportunity to wish you and your families the best for the Season (and not just the fishing Season !) – and a safe and prosperous New Year. We hope to see more past clients early in the New Year, and would welcome the opportunity to make 2007 the year that you finally catch that Sailfishon the fly, join with your friends in a trip to remember, or introduce yourchildren to the thrill of offshore fishing in a safe and welcoming environment. Whichever you aspire to…………..we hope to see you soon ! Our very Best wishes : Les, Carlos, Kevin & Jim Contact us at :  enquiries@greatsailfishing.com  or to register for our

Pacific Coast of Guatemala - December 17th, 2006

RECORDED:    82 °   FISHING: Excellent
This Guatemala fishing report is for the week ending December
17th 2006 and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing
Company operating out of the new Pez Vela
Marina.
This week saw offshore billfishing in Guatemala at its best.Sunny days combined with calm seas and fishing action that started as close as 12 miles from the dock. The action was constant and consistent day to day – with raises in the mid twenties and generally fish caught in the 15-20 range. One of our groups – the Sinclair party – managed to have a great days fishing on our newest addition to the fleet the 35ft Bertram “Reel Diver” with 76 raises, 63 bites and 45 releases on their first day out. This resulted in almost a 70% catch ratio….a testament to some very experienced anglers’ skill !Captain Marvin was full of praise for the team as they managed to position pitch baits exactly as needed to tempt the litup billfish to an aggressive bite and so the high catch ratio. There seems to be no slowdown in the fishing as we head into the Christmas peak, and the whole marina is buzzing with talk of a season that could easily match or even exceed the phenomenal numbers achieved last year. We still have some dates left for January – so give us a call and come down to experience some of the worlds finest Billfishing !! Contact us at :  enquiries@greatsailfishing.com  or to register for our

Pacific Coast of Guatemala - December 14th, 2006

RECORDED:    82 °   FISHING: Excellent
This fishing report is for the week ending December
11th 2006 and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing
Company operating out of the new Pez Vela
Marina,Guatemala.

Last week saw the start of the ILTTA (International
Light Tackle Tournament Association) fishing the
waters of Guatemala again. The Great Sailfishing
Company had all 3 Bertams fishing in the tournament,
which lasted over 5 days with a “rest day” in the
middle. We were please to host the “Chivas Girls” aboardthe Island Time (they hadn’t seen such a wide beam in a long time) – you can see the thumbnails here and on our website.
Fishing was fast and furious, but with Blue Water
ranging from 16-45 miles out, it required plenty of
cruising to find large numbers of Sailfish. This was
achieved by the last day of the tournament however –
as our Bertrams raised substantial numbers on the
final day, ranging from 45 for the “Joint Venture” to
a record 56 for one of our newest additions, the 35ft
“Reel Diver” while our other new addition the
Island Time (38ft.widebody) had 53 bites – perhaps
there is something to be said then for the low
frequency hum of the big Detroit Diesels in raising
fish !

The tournament rules meant that we hosted different,
and mixed groups of anglers on all boats each day, so
it is hard to draw any conclusions from the numbers of
fish brought to the boat – and in the end, it is the
challenge of our boats and our crews to raise the
fish………..and I don’t think anyone can argue that 56
raised on one boat didn’t give the anglers a good
chance at winning the tournament !

Sailfishing – and it is only getting better – please

Pacific Coast of Guatemala - November 25th, 2006

RECORDED:    82 °   FISHING: Good
This fishing report is for the week ending 11-25-06
and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company
operating out of the new Pez Vela Marina,Guatemala. The boats had to move around substantially this week to find Bluewater – lines in at 25 miles and moving out gradually to as far as 50 miles by the end of the week. The greater search area also caused the fish to be spread out and we didn’t see the large concentrations of billfish that we had experienced in the prior weeks. Most days the boats were reporting raises in the low teens with single digits to the boat. We at GreatSailfishing were pleased to welcome TV personality Cindy Garisson to fish aboard our new Bertram Sportfisher the Reel Diver. We hoped for some good action and footage, and were not let down as Cindy expertly cast a fly to a lit up Blue Marlin. After a considerable fight, even a Blue Marlin had to succumb to Cindy’s charms, and it was brought to the boat as a 200-250lb class fish. We look forward to seeing the replay on ESPN someday soon. Winds midweek caused the seas to push up a little, and further disperse bait – but by the w/end had subsided to our regular fishing conditions of blue skies, calm seas and 80 deg. F. temperatures – all was well again, and the fishing continues to improve. fishing grounds for this past week varied between 15

RECORDED:    80 °   FISHING: Great
This fishing report is for the week ending 11-05-06
and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company which
operates out of the new Pez Vela Marina, Guatemala. The
fishing grounds for this past week varied between 20
miles to as far as 47 miles. Seas this week have
continued to stay calm with sunny skies and light to
no wind in the mornings.

This week saw good to very good results with boats
reporting raises in the teens to the low
thirties, with releases also in the high single digits
to low twenties on conventional tackle. We at the Great
Sailfishing Company hosted Dr.DeNunna and son who
fished with us for four days. Over 2 1/2 days
targeting Pacific sails they released a total of 31
sails along with boating 5 dorado (one in the 40lb +
class). The other 1 1/2 days they wanted to target
marlin. They had a nice 400+ pounder in the spreads
which attacked the teasers and then the bait but
failed to hook-up.

Sailfishing good - Marlin bite turns on

This fishing report is for the week ending 10-30-06
and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company which
operates out of the new Pez Vela Marina, Guatemala. The
fishing grounds for this past week went out from
averaging 30 miles to as far as 45 miles over the past
month to 35 to 50 miles. Seas this week have continued
to stay calm with sunny skies and light to no wind in
the mornings.

This week saw good results with boats reporting raises
in the teens to the low twenties, with releases also in
the high single digits to mid teens - most boats
releasing between 8 to 12 sails on conventional
tackle. The most exciting news is that the marlin bite
this past week has been Great......
with most boats reporting at least one Blue Marlin in
their spreads every day. At the end of the week all of
the boats released anywhere from one  to four marlin
within 4 days. Another reason why we are looking
forward to the imminent arrival of our latest 35ft
Bertram, the "Reel Diver" - as she is fully equipped
to chase those marlin with a full tower and a Marlin
door. We are looking forward to a continuing strong
Marlin bite - and invite you down to experience it for
yourselves !!
