UPDATED COUNT!

While the Perla Del Mare and the Canaso venture off shore catching sails the Monkey Business is guarding the inside edge outside of the new San Marino Inlet.

Bill Pino and his group of 7 other devote anglers have had great luck on the “big” boats.  Collectively they have raised over 70 sails and released around 35 over the last few days.  Toss in a shots at at least 4 Marlin for added excitement and you have the makings of a successful 4 night 3 day fishing trip at a great price.

Meanwhile Captain Elswick has worked the Monkey Business on the inside edge of the better water and raised several sails and dorado around his FADs. (Fish Attracting Device)  It’s a much easier task now that he docks the Monkey Business at the lodge.  Sleeping in and running just off shore after breakfast has a nice allure to it. Come join us!

Guatemala Fishing report March 17th 2009 – Paddy’s Day

It may be St. Patricks Day…………

This Guatemala fishing report is for the week ending

March 17th  2009  and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company

operating out of the new Pez Vela Marina.

Yes – it may be Saint Patrick’s Day – but we are pleased to report that the water in Guatemala is not green!

We reported last week how a stream of weather fronts had pushed green water close into shore, which had been causing us some difficulties in finding consistent concentrations of bait and the predators that feed on them.  Since then, the weather has been kind to us, and we have had consistent warm days and calm seas that have enabled the blue water to push in and drive that nasty colder green water to one side.

If you take a look at the geography of the region, it is easy to see how the currents coming down from Mexico collide with the coastline and reflect back to form huge eddies that attract and hold large quantities of bait. These fast moving currents mean that water conditions – in particular the location of blue water – can change dramatically in as little as 48 hrs…..so even when the fishing has been tough going, as it was towards the end of last month, there is always hope that tomorrow could be an angling bonanza !

We have had several groups visiting us this past couple of weeks from the Northern States – glad to be out of the cold and the snow for a week or so – basking in the sunshine. An opportunity to rid the system of those winter bugs and microbes that linger far too long and cause the sniffling and blocked up noses !

I read this past week with some envy that Great White Sharks are about the healthiest animals on the planet – they have natural antibodies that make them immune to just about every bacterium known to science, they are also immune to cancer ! Seems to me that they should go and live in North Dakota for a while and see how they get on instead !

The fishing for these groups has been consistent at about 30 miles from the dock, and have been raising in the high teens of billfish per boat per day. Still a lot of Blue Marlin around – which is great news, as we usually anticipate if anything, the Marlin bite to pick up from here at this time of the season.

Pacific Coast of Guatemala - March 17th, 2009
supplied by: Buena Vista Sportfishing Lodge
RECORDED:    85 °   FISHING: Great

A large group of repeat clients have returned to enjoy the Buena Vista Sport Fishing lodge’s hospitality and what has turned out to be typical Guatemalan fishing.  The Perla Del Mare took top boat honors today raising over twenty four sails.  When all was said and done the crew of the Perla Del Mare had plenty of action in spite of the fact they ended up releasing 6 fish.  In addition to the aggressive sail bite they had a marlin of unknown size visit each teaser within the spread.  It would not eat a bait.

The other half of the group fished on the Release. While there day was shortened due to mechanical problems they did catch and release a 350LB Blue Marlin.

The bite continues to improve from early this season but still is not up to typical Guatemalan standards. Even so boats are seeing 9 -15 fish a day in not so blue water.  John Henry David managed to use up his 8 tags in his two days of fishing. They raised over 20 fish, released 12 sails and looked at a Marlin.

Captain Herb Gordon and his crew have arrived at the lodge to film a couple of episodes of “The Weekend Fisherman” as seen on the Outer Banks and Virginia Beach.  Today they raised 12 sails and released 9.  The weather and seas cooperated as the cold water dome continues to affect the number of fish seen and the intensity of the bite.  The cool water upwelling and warm cross currents may abate within the next 48 hours according to NOAA guidance.  Tomorrow’s focus will be for Roosterfish and some table fare.  Check back in to see the results.oNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal

Well John Henry David has returned.  He would not let the central america cool water dome from the early season stop him. A couple of weeks ago he booked his return trip on the Monkey Business and was rewarded nicely for his commitment and effort.  Fishing with Marcial they ventured off shore about 30 miles and found a very cooperative school of sails.  They raised at least 14 and released 9.  As a bonus they watched a marlin watch them on a typical slick calm warm water day in Guatemala. Not bad for one angler pitching a bait to multiple fish in the spread. John Henry frowns on the mate or Captain hooking his fish.

RECORDED:    83 °   FISHING: Great

Captain Joe Riley and his entourage have left them biting while David and Carson Martin have picked up the slack. The warm blue Pacific Ocean currents responsible for supporting the rich marine life habit off the coast of Guatemala have edged within 10 miles of the San Marino Inlet and Porta San Jose.  Along with the warm current has come great numbers of feeding sails.  After a rather late night of celebrating Captain Jody Elswick’s 40th birthday David and Carson spent a lazy day raising at least 22 sails.  13 of which they managed to catch and release.  Even with a bit of a breeze they managed to force themselves to tough it out and enjoy typical Guatemalan action.  The fishing too!

Pacific Coast of Guatemala - March 2nd, 2009
supplied by: Buena Vista Sportfishing Lodge
RECORDED:    90 °   FISHING: Great

It was only a matter of time and perseverance.  The Monkey Business and the Fat Cat along with the rest of the fleet found the fish yesterday. As the warm water wedge expands and works it way closer inshore the marine life (bait) activity has increased substantially.  Trolling some 20 – 25 miles SW of San Marino Inlet huge areas of bait with feeding sails greeted Captain Joe Riley and his friends Ken Navis, George and Paul Winter, Bill and Bill Dailey Jr. All of them got in on the action as a typical Pacific Sailfish bite ensued.  The action was steady most of the day and provided this experienced group of anglers with lots of laughs and good stories to share with there snowbound friends up north. Both boats where humbled by multiple doubles and triples. The end result was a collective 40 plus sails in the spreads of which 18 where caught and released.  It looks like the action is heating up so check us out at http://www.buenavistasportfishing.com/fishing-reports and get in on the action.

Captain Joe Riley fishing the Fat Cat reports that his fleet and band of friends from the OC Maryland area continue to find some action.  Captain Navis also put his buddies on the bite. Collectively  they raised 22 sails of which 9 where caught and released.  Again the dolphin fish continue to fine tune there hooking skills. Joe got his turn at the transom and released one sail. He asked me to mention that he misses the family and looks forward to seeing them next week.

The entire San Jose fleet did about the same as a warm water wedge 30 miles out continues  to move closer inshore.

RECORDED:    87 °   FISHING: Good

Captain Joe Riley and his friends have found an improving bill fish bite towards the darker side of this moon phase. Collectively the Monkey Business and the Fat Cat fished 35 miles off shore yesterday.  Between them 15 sails and a Marlin swam into there spreads and eight where caught and released. The Marlin was not one of them.  As always the Mia Mia self sacrifice and are a consistent source of table fare.  The weather has calmed and the warmer blue water currents of the Pacific have moved back closer to shore.  Let’s hope the billfish continue to do so as well.  Stay tuned!

Captain Ken Navis stepped up to the helm today and showed the boys he has not lost his touch.  He took over the controls of Monkey Business and ran, along with the Fat Cat, 35 miles offshore where there found the blue warm water, bait and birds.  That combination usually always means sailfish are nearby!  They where not disappointed as collectively they went 13 for 17.
