I saw a guy who accidentally jumped the gun on the opening of the river and fished it today, the day before it's really opened. His stimulator was abused constantly in three locations, by fish that had been getting fat. The fly sunk, and they hit it. Whatever, and they hit it. I know this sounds sacreligious, but hit it hard. Those fish need to get educated before their caught out.

The forest is still open, the water still flowing, so keep fishing it while you can. Some caddis are in the air. I'd fish an elk hair, stimmie, and trail a hard shell ant after them. Small heavy nymphs under an indicator will also do well - micromays and such - but who wants to ditch the dry fly if you don't have to. It's really fun sight fishing right now, a perfect time to learn about how trout behave and how to deal with them when they're spooky.
Please be careful with fire.

There's still some water, and a lot less trash thanks to the UPWA Cleanup. Caddis dries and small heavies will give you a nice day. I like the new tungsten red or yellow micromays.
Speaking of UPWA and their battle against those who are trying to make the canyon a landfill, please attend their fundraiser on Father's Day (do him proud and take him out to dinner). UPWA does so much up there, and on a shoestring budget. That's the Upper Pecos Watershed Association, our champion in the Pecos.

The flows are about July type, just high enough to make the fish feel secure enough to come to the surface. Depending on who you talk to (or to whom you talk, to be a prig), stoneflies seem to have come and gone. They were in Dalton, then at Willow. They were at Terrero, then not.
No matter, an orange stimmy kind of small (8) or a bedhead has brought up plenty of trout. A bugmeister or beetle pattern will also do the trick. I like trailing a heavy small bug like a purple copper john, prince charming, or zebra midge (black, red, or brown) on the brighter days, in other words, every day. If it doesn't depress you to do so, please pick up a little trash while you're out there. The New Mexico haters expect that of you.

Like the Guad, the big things flying around like birds. When they land on your neck it's like Elvira's rubbing up on you. Big stones followed by beadheads should work fine. Pick up some trash while your out there.

Hopper and un dropper. Zebras down, pheasant tails, caddis pupae. Sink a hornberg and get your old school game in shape. Bugmeister's are the only dry you need, but so is anything.

The cold weather has put them off the surface a bit, but expect that to change pronto with the sun back out. Everything from caddis to stimmies will do fine. Big fat stones too. Otherwise, your basic beadheads will do the trick. My recent fave is the prince charming, which covers a bunch of bugs generally. As far as specific bugs are concerned, a baetis looking thing is fluttering in the late afternoon. I think big stones will be making their move soon, so cover the nymph stage and you will bring them out.

Puro sight fishing with dries. If you want, that is. You might have to plumb the big holes if you want to get the big fish. And there are, believe it or not, some big fish in the Pecos, perhaps starved out of their private water sardine cans or simply endowed with the rambling bone. Anyway, it's July in April out there. I wish I could be telling you to bring your stocking cap, but instead I'm advising you to bring plenty of sunscreen. For your dropper nymph, a medium sized beadhead should be all the weight you need. Zebras give you a quick shot to the bottom with small fly appeal.
