Pecos River - March 21st, 2011
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:    71 °   FISHING: Good
Get it while you can, dry fly love all the way up the canyon. You should be able to sight fish in the slower water with tiny surface bugs.  Of course if you're just out to get a bunch, run some small beadies, the only weight you should need being the flies you choose.  Pray for rain and snow.

Water is muy low, portending a horrible fire season if we don't get some moisture up in here, and lickety split.  But the fishing right now is just fine if you're fishing a short leash between indicator and first nymph (about 3 to 4 feet). And that nymph should be a somewhat heavy one, for it will serve as all of your weight to get your rig into the fish zone. I'm thinking about the weight of a size 12 or 14 copper john.  Or a size 10 or 12 pheasant tail.  You get the idea.  I don't think fly matters, just that you get it down and on a tight leader.

The river is apparently flirting with the idea of not being a river; it's that low.  It's also quite ice free and fishing fine from at least Dalton to Bert Woodstock.  Small mayfly nymphs will see you through, killers, micros, FBPTs (WTF! LOL!), and juju baetis.  I don't see them as being too picky if you're dishing it up just right, but you've heard me say that before.  I'd say expect light hits (could be a light hit, or the fact that current is almost nonexistent in some pools), but don't close your mind to the possibility of fish coming to the surface during the warm part of what is annoyingly becoming a pattern of unMarchlike warm days.  Have fun.

Pecos River - February 24th, 2011

RECORDED:    50 °   FISHING: Fair
I'm going to give the Pecos a "go ahead and try it" this week, because I can't imagine this warm weather hasn't had an impact on things.  There should at least be a good deal of open water to poke around in.  I would poke with a combination of meat (worms, egg patterns) and peanuts (micromays, pheasant tails, jujubes).  Fish it slow.  That all said, they're saying we might get some snow before the week's out, "they" or anyone predicting weather, becoming more reluctant to officially identify themselves these days.

Reports from Jamie Koch down to town indicate that fish can be caught if you fish the pools well.  Nymphs are the ticket, not something as active as a streamer.  The water is still going to be kind of cold, though if these weather trends continue, we'll be seeing more and more ice free water.  I'd run a small nymph to medium, and some kind of protein pill like a worm, egg, or cranefly.

All I can say is we've been hearing some stories.  In one, last week, a woman's boyfriend couldn't get her off the water AT DARK, BECAUSE SHE WAS TOO BUSY HOOKING FISH ON DRY FLIES!  I know these folks, and they're legit.  I've had some other reports of spotty fishing, well fished tiny beadheads and worms turning up a fish or two.  What else are you doing this weekend?  Oh, forgot.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Pecos River - November 12th, 2010
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:    43 °   FISHING: Poor
The cold has the fish down in the dumps.  Good reports have come in from Dalton, some from Terrero.  I think the fish are a little shocked by the coming of winter.  Things should pick up once they get used to the pain.  For the best chances, concentrate on the pools and get as deep as you can with as little weight as possible.  A right angle indicator rig helps; maybe use a #14 copper john as your weight.  Set the hook at the slightest flicker in your indicator.  Small bead flies, egg patterns, worm patterns, zebra midges.

Weather and Lunar Phases

Pecos River - October 21st, 2010
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:    69 °   FISHING: Great
But for last night's spike in water levels, the normal levels are low enough to demand a longer cast and lighter tippets.  Small bwo imitations would be my go to bugs (if I wasn't going more blinder by the minute); otherwise, a puterbaugh caddis is a fine choice, trailed by a soft hackle or small bead head nymph.  Myself, I wouldn't trail a dropper unless I absolutely had to, simply because our dry fly window is starting to close with this colder weather.  Who doesn't love the sipping heads.

Pecos River - September 30th, 2010
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:    77 °   FISHING: Excellent
If it was me, I would do a double dry, an attractor up front followed by a tiny bwo imitation like a patch adams or comparadun.  Cluster midges will do the trick too.  Small brass or glass bead nymphs would work as trailers too.  The crowds are thinner so you should have a wonderful time in the fall colors.

Cow Creek Ranch is going to open to fishing soon, with us as guides if you want a sweet big fish experience.

A summer's worth of education has the Pecos fish a little on the snobby side.  But you can catch them if your presentation is delicate and you're staying out of sight.  A big beef I'm hearing from anglers who haven't done well recently is that the pools aren't giving up fish like they should.  Almost to the one, these anglers have been blowing off the shallow riffles and pockets and focusing entirely on the pools.  Naughty, naughty!  To cut them slack, these guys haven't fished the river much, and when they've tried again fishing the whole river, they always do fine.  The late summer TFM (Tiny F***ing Mayfly ) hatch is starting to rev up, so make sure you have your comparaduns and parachutes in the box.
