Pecos River - April 25th, 2010
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
61 °
FISHING: Fair
In town, flows are around 250cfs and the water is frigid in the morning, not warming too much in the afternoon. Warmer afternoon air temps are causing a surge in flows later in the day. Fishing has been pretty good, though, despite run-off using Anvil Eggs, San Juan Worms, Golden Stones, and Camo Buggers. Fish slower spots behing boulders and along banks. Use plenty of weight and tightline your nymphs.

Pecos River - March 26th, 2010

FISHING: Good
In the Windy stretch, we've heard of two independent reports of beetles producing surface strikes. The droppers, small beadheads like micromays, PTs, and red zebras, are getting eaten as well. Methinks the small black and brown stoneflies might be attracting attention. The fish have had a hard winter, have lost a lot of weight, so they're going to be looking for more and more opportunities to eat. In other words, red San Juan worm. Down on the monument, small mayflies, worms, or camo buggers will wake up the fish if they're to be woken up at all.

Pecos River - March 18th, 2010

FISHING: Fair
Last weekend's dump of wet snow has made it a little tougher for the canyon fish to get out of bed in the morning, but they indeed wake up by the middle of the afternoon. Fish spots with the longest sun exposure, generally stretches with fewer trees and lower hills that won't block the midday sun. The monument opens up this week for a brief period before runoff; I'd try there for sure. Try a range of nymphs, princes, jackals, red worms, eggs, green caddis larvae and the like. And fish more thoroughly than you're used to, since cold fish are less likely to move very far for food; they won't swing at bad pitches, so you'll need to make sure you're in a pretty strict strike zone.

Pecos River - February 2nd, 2010

FISHING: Good
That's a qualified good, as in, if you have an afternoon on your hands and want to spend it outdoors in a pretty and snowy mountain setting without boards strapped to your feet, you can go to the Pecos and actually have a chance at catching a few fish. Our friend Buck has been keeping regular hours on the river and to great avail. Rainbows AND browns are taking his red San Juan worm and green caddis rockworm just often enough to keep him smiling, though could that be the thermos of toddies talking (kidding Buck)?

FISHING: Poor
I'm putting in a Pecos report only because fish are being caught there. Run a nymph rig along the ice shelves. Beats watching soaps, though napping and tying bugs seems preferable to going out in this stuff. Bait patterns, worms, eggs.

Pecos River - December 2nd, 2009

FISHING: Poor
Imagine being cold blooded in a cold river. Imagine having a choice between being there and not being there, and choosing to not be there. This would be a good choice, unless you just want to get out and throw the line. You could do worse.

Pecos River - November 23rd, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
59 °
FISHING: Fair
No recent reports on the Pecos, though if this warmish weather holds, you should be able to pick up a few on small nymphs. I'd actually run them beneath a hopper; if the hoppers aren't all dead yet, there will probably be some drowned ones in the flow. Certainly the prey image isn't dead yet in the minds of the Pecos trout.

FISHING: Excellent
There are very few anglers on the Pecos these days, and the fish are celebrating. Size 18 micromays, PTs, Princes, Copper Johns. I'd throw a funky dry as my flag too, in case you need an indicator. Look for fish in all depths, especially when the sun is high. If the water is warmish, don't drop your nymphs too deep so as not to snag. Above all, enjoy the solitude.

Pecos River - October 21st, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
42 °
FISHING: Excellent
The water is up, but when it drops again, expect fabulous fishing at Dalton, Windy, Jamie Koch and Cowles. Don't overlook the skinny water, because the browns are there and they're eating. Dry and dropper rigs will keep you busy all day. Make sure your nymph is not too heavy; it will save you a lot of flies and you won't be ruining good water by retrieving snagged nymphs. PTs, micromays, militaries, PT Cruisers, you know the drill. Your dries can sink a bit if you want to run a Parachute Adams (the water's been so clear, you can see a #18 even if it sinks; still a good indicator).

Pecos River - October 8th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
65 °
FISHING: Great
Fishing up the canyon will be challenging, if only because the water is skinnier and the fish are at times keyed on those tiny olives that are coming off. Long leaders and pile casts are very helpful to achieve drag free drifts.
Down at the park, however, you'll be fishing in the dark, which is to say it's LIGHTS OUT down there. Dries ranging from patch adams to elk hairs to cripple duns are doing very well, as are your favorite medium to small sized nymphs. Big fish will chase a streamer thrown at the bank too. Princes, PTs, Secrets, PT Cruisers, Oops, micromays and turds are all working well. Madonnas and camos will bring the hot streamer action.
