Pecos River - September 28th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
70 °
FISHING: Good
The late season squalls have left the stream in perfect condition. Expect cold morning temps and nymphing, warming up to the reliable fall olive hatch. It's amazing how picky those little browns can get, but if you hit it right, meaning 6X tippet and 20 and smaller patch adams or comparaduns, you will have some really fun hatch matching. Military mays are the nymphs of choice, or just your run of the mill PTs and micromays.

Pecos River - August 26th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
78 °
FISHING: Good
Though the fish are biting well on anything, the water is so low that it sometimes doesn't feel like fishing. But they definitely are biting: small elk hairs, cluster midges, ants and hoppers will do most of the damage. Nice dry fly action as the shade falls. Careful on the weekends, as the RV (recreational vehicle, I remind myself, wondering how cramming twenty of them bumper to bumper in a campground even slighly resembles recreation) hatch is thick lower in the canyon. Try some hiking up the tribs and up the mainstem above the last bridge before Jacks Creek.

Pecos River - August 17th, 2009

RECORDED:
77 °
FISHING: Excellent
The Pecos is very low, and very crowded on weekends. That said, fishing remains pretty great. If the fishing slows down, it will probably be in response to the weather, the hot and bright variety. If it's midday and fishing is starting to stink a bit, hit the shady spots, the faster water, and deeper stretches. They're coming out in the later hours, eating some red quill looking mayfly, among other things. A #16 Patch Adams might be all you need, though I would have an elk hair or two with me until the spruce moths are over with.

Pecos River - July 27th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
79 °
FISHING: Great
Monster crowds on the weekends, the canyon looks like Woodstock for crying out loud. But the fishing is still good, on elk hairs, prince, coppers, olive and orange stimmies. Some really big browns have been reported from Dalton down to the Monastery. I should tell you that these fish were killed, a good reason to join Truchas Chapter TU's work in the canyon if there ever was one. These nice rains have kept the fish spunky all week, but God forbid another heat spell hits.

Pecos River - July 2nd, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
83 °
FISHING: Excellent
Stimulators are doing their normal magic as are princes and copper johns. Some smaller stoneflies in brown are bringing some fish to the surface, and so are the ants. Stick to the riffles where the bait fishermen don't like to go. Or fish early and late. These rains are causing some dirty water, but at least it's water. Good reports out of the monument lately and on lower private waters.

Pecos River - May 29th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
66 °
FISHING: Good
Though dropping by the minute, the Pecos is pushing some water. Big dries along the banks will work, as will red worms, hare's ears, Doc Rivers, and my personal runoff favorite, the anvil egg. This is a great time to practice your no indicator nymphing; focus on keeping your line tight to your split shot and try to feel the takes. Great for your overall game.

Pecos River - May 19th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
81 °
FISHING: Great
Stoneflies are popping now, the giants and some Skwalas (Skwala looking anyway) downstream. Orange stimmies or the like are good bets in size 6 or 8, and yellow or olive stimmies will do for Skwalas in sizes 8 and 10. Switch around though if nothing is happening; the fish are on the eat and will hit something, even if it's a red worm or an egg pattern.

Pecos River - April 20th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
56 °
FISHING: Great
It's coming up, but the stoneflies are also starting to move. Stay safe and fish the pockets. Get your flies down. If given three bugs, I'd go with an anvil egg, a worm, and a twenty incher. Lots of big fish are being taken below the private stretches at Jamie Koch and the bridge above Windy.

Pecos River - April 6th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
53 °
FISHING: Excellent
Cover the water well with your favorite nymph, and you should do just fine. Stoneflies should be more active as spring progresses, so some large bug should be in your mix. Purple princes are rocking, copper johns, and craneflies. Fishing's good all the way to Cowles. Things slow down noticeably after the afternoon shade settles in.

Pecos River - March 24th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
53 °
FISHING: Great
Water is a bit dirty and coming up, but don't let that stop you. Deep nymphs and egg patters are doing fine from town up to Cowles. Stonefly nymphs are a good go to, weighted with a B and no indicator if you wish.
