BWO's are on for the fall. Remember to go small (20-22) for both surface and sub-surface imitations. Reports of some fish taking hoppers are filtering through the shop. Middle Provo:
TA great time to fish with Prince nymphs and other stone fly nymph imitations. Midges and blue wing nymphs still effective. Keep an eye out for PMD. Fish deep but on poor weather days look for fish to suspend feeding on midge pupa and any BWO still hatching.

Provo River - April 4th, 2008

FISHING: Good

Lower Provo:
The Lower Provo is starting to run high. With all the snow that we have received this winter, high water is to be expected, but this came a little early. There is some slightly stained down lower, but not enough to stop you from fishing it. That being said the Lower continues to fish well. The Blue-Wings are out, but with little consistency. Some days the hatch is stronger than others. Nymphing is still a great option when the bugs are not out.
Middle Provo: The same water conditions exist on the Middle as the Lower. The water level is not up near as much, but the feeder creeks are slightly staining the lower stretched. The BWO's are a little stronger on the Middle, but we still aren't ready call them consistent.
Don't be afraid to walk a little ways from the parking areas. This little walk can go a long way to finding some open water.
Flies you will need for a day on the middle and lower Provo: Dry flies: Blue Wing Olives - Parachutes and standards. Gulper Specials, Midge: griffiths gnat, befus midge, parachute adams. Nymphs: Hares ears: with and without a bead 14-18. Never fish the Weber with out hares ears., Sowbugs, scuds and ray charles: Tan Sowbug, Zebra midge: 16-22 bro, blk, gry, wine, red, Red fox squirrel nymph: 16-18, Eggs, San juan worm: red and brown PMD
Streamers: This may be one of your best options right now. Try your standards, double bunnies, clousers, woolly buggers and zonkers.

Lower Provo:
The Lower Provo is still running high. It is fishable for those willing to work a little harder than normal. There is not end in sight for the high water on the lower. Always remeber the dangers of wading in high water. The river is unforgiving to those who do not show it proper respect.
Middle Provo: The middle Provo has been the go to this last week. The top half of the middle has been the most productive, with the lower section of the river still off color and difficult to fish. The water is still high, about 450 cfs. Thsi is a lot better than the almost 600 is was flowing at. This is definately a fishable flow, and the fish are definately eating.
For the most part the caddis and PMD hatchs are over. There are a few caddis on the water early and late. Nymphing is going to be the most productive technique this time of the year. Streamer can also be productive this time of year, and will only fish better and better as we come into the fall.
On a side note, the trees are beginning to change color, and the mountain sides are ablaze with reds, oranges and yellows. If nothing else it is a wonderful time of year be be in the Heber Valley enjoying the beauty all around you.
Flies you will need for a day on the middle and lower Provo: Dry flies: Terestials: Hoppers, chernobyls, ants and beetles. Attractors: Triple double amber, olive and purple Nymphs: Sowbugs, scuds and ray charles: 16-20 ( especially good at high water) Prince Nymph Zebra midge: 16-22 bro, blk, gry, wine, red (red can be good at higher water) Red fox squirrel nymph: 16-18 San juan worm: red and brown (another good high water fly) Glo bugs: Not usually a go to pattern this time of year, but worth a shot right now. Pheasant tail: 16-20 with and without bead
Streamers: This may be one of your best options right now. Try your standards, double bunnies, clousers, woolly buggers and zonkers.

Middle Provo:
Well the state realized they had drawn Deer Creek down too far, and now they are trying to put some water back into it. This means they are drawing if from Jordanelle, and that means it is all going down the middle Provo. In the last week the middle has risen from a flow of about 125 fps to 580 fps, at least that is accorging to USGS site. This means we are in the same boat we are in with the lower Provo.
We have not heard a time line for the water flows getting back to normal on the middle. Based on what we saw on Deer Creek the other day, there is a lot of water that needed to stabilize things. That means it will probably be some time before we see the flows return to normal.
We are lucky to have these two awesome fisheries in our back yard, but remember there is another little jewel, not far from the Provo. The Weber is only minutes away, and is a great fall back option.
Flies you will need for a day on the middle and lower Provo:
Dry flies: Terestials: Hoppers, chernobyls, ants and beetles. PMD's: Extended bodies, parachutes and comparaduns 18-20 Caddis: Elk hair caddis, EZ caddis and goddard caddis 14-18 Nymphs: Sowbugs, scuds and ray charles: 16-20 ( especially good at high water) Pheasant tails: 16-20 PMD: Barrs PMD emerger has been working well Prince Nymph Zebra midge: 16-22 bro, blk, gry, wine, red (red can be good at higher water) Red fox squirrel nymph: 16-18 San juan worm: red and brown (another good high water fly) Glo bugs: Not usually a go to pattern this time of year, but worth a shot right now. Caddis nymphs: Have a good variety of caddis patterns. The green weenie has been a good one.
