Chama River Watershed: Irrigation season is pretty well over and flows have dropped below both dams. No reports from Abiquiu, but El Vado is producing some fish. The water is murky, so use nymphs and streamers.

Jemez Area Streams: Pretty good reports on a number of streams. Take the little nymphs, and hope for a little dry fly action on warmer days.

Heavy rain the last two days in many places has lowered temperatures and sent water levels up. A couple days of clear weather will settle the murkiness and leave good fishing.

Chama River Watershed: Irrigation season is pretty well over and flows have dropped below both dams. The water is murky, so use nymphs and streamers. Game and Fish stocked below Abiquiu three weeks ago. Please remember that special regulations apply to the downstream highway bridge. Headwaters are high.

Jemez Area Streams: The rain muddies up the meadows and the volcanic silt takes a long time to settle out, but cooler temperatures wake up these streams. Take fine tippets, small dry flies and some little nymphs along, too.

Valle Vidal: Flows are too low for fishing, thanks to the end of irrigation season.

Chama River Watershed:  Tailwaters not recommended. There are some fish being caught on worms in muddy water below El Vado Dam, but flows are being jacked around so much the visibility will make wading and fishing difficult. Headwaters better.

Although the weatherman says monsoons are over, don't believe it. Cooler temperatures are evident in the mornings. Expect a busy holiday weekend and do some walking.

Chama River Watershed:  Not recommended. There are some fish being caught on worms in muddy water below El Vado Dam, but flows are being jacked around so much the visibility will make wading and fishing difficult. If you want to try something goofy, go up to El Vado Lake and hunt carp in the back coves on a fly--it's a challenge!

FISHING: Poor
Stream Flow Conditions [click here]

Chama River Watershed:  This poor river!  Water czars move to the beat of municipal water demand, so dam gates at El Vado and Abiquiu are being opened and shut every few days.  Flows double or triple in a matter of a couple hours (no gradual ramping), so expect murky conditions and disturbed fish after sudden changes.  Game and Fish is still stocking below El Vado Dam, but try the upstream areas for clearer water between storms.

Chama River Watershed:  A slug of water was released for a raft excursion last weekend, so flows are now down around 345cfs below El Vado.  Water is murky but fishable with nypmhs and streamers for bigger trout downstream.

FISHING: Good
Stream Flow Conditions [click here]

Chama River Watershed:  Water at both dams has been cut to 10% of last week's flows.  A muddy wreck below Abiquiu and pretty murky, too, below El Vado.  Headwaters are good for those willing to hike in above the "landslide" area.

Chama River Watershed:  The dams at El Vado and Abiquiu are both running at over 650 cfs.  Tough fly fishing conditions at both areas.  Headwaters are good for those willing to hike in.

FISHING: Poor

Chama River Watershed:  After three days at lower flows, the dams at both El Vado and Abiquiu were flung wide to deliver water downstream.  The flow at El Vado went from 65 to 600cfs in less than 24 hours.  Tough fly fishing conditions at both areas.
