Rio Chama - October 8th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
65 °
FISHING: Great
Flows are still in flux at Coop's, but expect them to stabilize. Pretty much everywhere from town on down should fish well on small mayflies, although opportunistic feeding is definitely the deal right now. Streamers near the banks and through the tailouts might yield a monster for you; if you get an overly colored or scarred brown or any super ripe hens, you should get out of there and find somewhere else to fish. Keep an eye out for the gravel, and for bears.

Rio Chama - September 28th, 2009

FISHING: Excellent
All good all over. Streamers, turds, green caddis larvae, worms, and mice. This is the time of year to try out your gnarliest streamer creations, no matter what color they are. Purple or yellow draw some thunderous strikes, purple AND yellow too. Crayfish, mice. I'd say do the dry/dropper thing, but this is big fish time on the Chama for sure. If it's a dry, make it a big one. If it's a nymph, make it a big one. Run through your box, because it's not typically a picky time of year for those fish. Watch for bears too in the upper river; they're putting on the fat and will be nosing around for God knows what.

FISHING: Fair
If the release from El Vado would only go down, we might have some killer fishing on the Chama. As it is, most of the accessible stuff turns on mainly in the evenings, when the dry fly fishing is quite nice. Otherwise, for good all day fishing, you're going to have to bust way into the Sargent, and I mean way in. Plenty of fish and food, even if the water's a bit skinny. You might need a longer cast on the pools and keep a low profile in the pockets, but the fish are willing. I like a parachute hopper trailing a secret or a jackal. Wire caddis pupae are also worth trying as are hardshell ants.

FISHING: Poor
Until they drop the El Vado flows - not likely soon - the Chama will be TA and above. With irrigators taking so much, the water temps are up there. The fish, as a result, are under there, logs, cutbanks, rocks, anywhere there is a chance of relief from the sun or any predator that, at these water levels, could cherry pick them with minimal effort. They come out in the evenings to feed, so if you're up there already, great, but if you're not, don't make a day of it. Unless you're going to the Sargent, but you have to get at least 45 minutes into it before the fishing is anything close to consistent.

FISHING: Good
Try above town, in town, and near Unser's place. Looking for flows at Coops to stabilize for some good PMD fishing there. No matter where you fish, midsummer Chama demands that you fish hard: change flies, rigs, locations until you hit or don't hit the mother lode. Don't expect to just roll up and catch fish on a stimulator, though many certainly do.

Rio Chama - July 2nd, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
86 °
FISHING: Excellent
From the Heron stretch up it's lights out, though the midsummer bathwater at Heron will arrive any day now if the rains abate to any great degree. Stones are working well down there as are elk hair caddis. The Wilcox TNT is my new favorite caddis pupa, works for bugs of any color. The Sargent is amazing now, though you must bring a partner in case you break a leg or get mauled by a cougar and need someone to tell the rescue team where to find you. But the fishing is worth it; I had some fish hold at the bottom of the pools for quite a long time until I could gauge their size, usually from 10 to 12 inches. A small gray may was hatching, a PMD too, and caddis were everywhere. Wardens and jackals took most of the fish. It's up to you though; anything will work. If you can get in there early or stay late or get some cloud cover, you've a chance at some big and very fast browns up to two feet long.
I'd resist the temptation to go to Coop's; they could jack the flow on you at any time.

Rio Chama - June 12th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
79 °
FISHING: Great
I say great because, if you're up to it, you can muscle your way into some high (but dropping) flows and turn up some big fish. I mean browns up to two feet long. Dark brown stone nymphs or something like a big Warden's, jackals, or camo bugger. The fish are on the bite, but the wading's still bit dicey. A shortish 5 or 6 weight would be a nice tool to have.
