Rio Chama - April 20th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
64 °
FISHING: Poor
I'm saying poor simply because the water's up at La Puente, above the dams. So it's muddy, probably cold, and probably only getting higher. If I were going, I'd hit the Heron stretch and jig the potholes near the banks. If I could. Seems like too much work for what else you could be doing in the state.

FISHING: Fair
Try Coops and just off the highway on the Heron road. Find slow water and comb it well with small to medium copper johns, PTs, SJ worms, and micromays. Don't be afraid to go ultra small and throw a little flash in there, like a lightning bug. Mind the wind, keeping your casts short and circular.

FISHING: Poor
I'm saying poor because people are generally missing on the Chama. A fishing reporter always runs the risk of labeling the fishing bad, only to have some whippersnapper whale on the fish. But Abiquiu is spotty; huge fish have been seen there. El Vado seems to depend on a flow in the high 200s and finding fish, probably a good walk down from Coops. Lots of bait boxes and beer cans littered near the parking areas, while the trashcans stand empty for some utterly stupid reason. Anyway, I think the low flows of a couple months ago allowed a significant harvest. If you catch one in a spot, you'll catch another until it stops. Copper Johns, purple princes and secrets. Fish a worm and egg pattern too.

FISHING: Fair
Depends on what your expectations are. If you'll be disappointed with anything but a lights out day, don't bother going. If you'll be content to work hard and pick up a few possibly big silver browns, it's worth the trip to hit Coops. As far as I've been able to discern, if you comb the water and hit a fish, you will hit more in that same spot. Finding that key fish is the deal though, so cover water efficiently and move on if it's not happening. Slow water seems to be where they are. Lots of bait boxes though, so I'm wondering if there's been too much harvesting. Copper john, purple prince, secret, eggs, and worms will give you a good shot. Make sure you're tapping bottom, and don't set your indicator too far from your weight.

Rio Chama - March 3rd, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
55 °
FISHING: Good
Warmer water means the possibility of good streamer action at Coop's. Otherwise, meaty nymphs. Number 3 in your lineup should be small stuff. If the water's above 40, fish methodically through your spots and then move.

Rio Chama - July 10th, 2005
supplied by: The Reel Life
FISHING: Fair
Chama River Watershed: Runoff from Cumbres is coming down and some good fish have ben hooked above El Vado Lake (hike in). Murky water at 100cfs below El Vado is still yielding catches.
Cimmaron: Water flows are good below Eagle Nest Lake and fish have been responding heartily.
Area lakes: McAlister is low and ringed with duckweed, but producing some good fish for folks who venture out in float tubes. A nice report from the pretty Canjilon Lakes area--remember the upper (fourth) pond has some Brookies. No reports from the high lakes in the Pecos Wilderness, but expect it to still be pretty cold.
Valle Vidal: Fishing in the Vidal on opening weekend was very crowded, but there was still good fishing on the Costilla and Shuree Ponds. Watch regulated flows on Costilla; they will vary with downstream water demand.

Rio Chama - June 25th, 2005
supplied by: The Reel Life
FISHING: Good
Chama River Watershed: Still a sizable amount coming of Cumbres Pass into El Vado Lake, but G&F has stocked the clear water anyway. Flow below El Vado has been less than 100cfs for a week and fishing is good in murky water. Still somewhat high below Abiquiu.

Rio Chama - June 4th, 2005
supplied by: The Reel Life
FISHING: Poor
Chama River Watershed: Still running full-tilt off Cumbres Pass into El Vado Lake. Flow below El Vado has been 100-150cfs for a week and fishing is fair in murky water. Still high below Abiquiu.

Rio Chama - May 21st, 2005
supplied by: The Reel Life
FISHING: Poor
Chama River Watershed: Higher still for the time being. Running full-tilt off Cumbres Pass (almost 5000cfs!) and at both dams to send meltwater down to Albuquerque and parts south. Look for flows below both dams to be cut sometime in the next two weeks, though.
