Rio Chama - May 11th, 2005
supplied by: The Reel Life
FISHING: Poor
Sangre de Cristo Streams: No change: very cold. Lots of very dirty water in Embudo.

Chama River Watershed: No change. Full-tilt boogie coming off Cumbres Pass (over 1000 cfs) and at both dams to send meltwater down to Albuquerque and parts south.

Jemez Area Streams: The Jemez slowed some more with the cool weather, but expect it to return to higher flows. If you're headed that direction, you might try Fenton Lake instead--fishing for stockers was good again last week.

Area Lakes: Cochiti is very muddy but boaters may find some fish in east shore coves or along the dam. A fair report from McAllister, better from Santa Cruz and Fenton. If you just need to get out SOMEWHERE, then consider a little afternoon jaunt to San Ildefonso. The Pueblo has a small pond stocked with rainbow trout and channel catfish--stop at the visitor office at the plaza to check in and pay the fee.

Just for fun: The Santa Fe River has been stocked again in town between Patrick Smith Park and Camino Alire. I watched yesterday, bemused, as a guy from the Lisboa Springs hatchery parked on Alameda Street scooped up a wriggling net full of rainbows and ran across the Guadalupe bridge sidewalk, down the stairs and down to the water to deposit the fish. Fun for the kids, and you can go along, too.

Sangre de Cristo Streams: No change: very cold. Very dirty water in Embudo.

Chama River Watershed: Full-tilt boogie coming off Cumbres Pass (over 1000 cfs) and at both dams to send meltwater down to Albuquerque and parts south.

Jemez Area Streams: The Jemez gauge is 640 cfs which is big. If you're headed that direction, you might try Fenton Lake instead--fishing for stockers was good last week.

Area Lakes: Fair at McAllister, some fat fish if you can get out between windstorms with streamer patterns. Try Santa Cruz for stockers--if you don't want to get your feet wet, there are a few spots around the shoreline for high backcasts or roll casting. There was a big one caught there last week. Fair reports for crappie, pike and smallmouth at Cochiti, trout at Abiquiu Lake and carp (yes, carp) at El Vado.

FISHING: Poor
Chama River Watershed: Full-tilt boogie as of today at El Vado, 526cfs. Abiquiu is being ramped, too, to send meltwater down to Albuquerque and parts south.

Jemez Area Streams: The Jemez gauge is 166cfs which is big by normal standards. Yea! Water!

Area Lakes: Getting better. Fair to good at McAllister, some fat fish if you can get out between windstorms with streamer patterns. Better reports from Santa Cruz for stockers--if you don't want to get your feet wet, there are a few spots around the shoreline for high backcasts or roll casting. Decent for pike and smallmouth at Cochiti, trout at Abiquiu Lake.

FISHING: Poor
Sangre de Cristo Streams: No change: very cold. Dirty water in Embudo.

Chama River Watershed: Water levels at both dams have remained stable the past week, but dirty water is reported below El Vado with slow fishing.

Jemez Area Streams: A sunny day and this area is starting to melt out--right on schedule, but it makes for hit-and-miss fishing.

Area Lakes: Same. Slow at McAllister, but fat fish if you can get out between windstorms. Better reports from Santa Cruz for stockers--if you don't want to get your feet wet, there are a few spots around the shoreline for high backcasts or roll casting. Jicarilla Lakes open tomorrow.

Rio Chama - February 24th, 2005

FISHING: Poor
Rio Grande: Big water and slower fishing. Red has been fair with some nice fish near the confluence between runoff surges.

Sangre de Cristo Streams: Cold until spring. Higher elevation waters are pretty well kaput.

Chama River Watershed: No reports. Water is over 230cfs at both dams.

Jemez Area Streams: Sizable water with wet weather. No good reports.

FISHING: Fair
Flows are staying 100cfs or less below both El Vado and Abiquiu Dams, and steady in the last week. These low flows make fish more accessible, but please think of these as catch-and-release stretches for wild fish.

Chama River Watershed: Flows are staying less than 100cfs below both El Vado and Abiquiu Dams, although they've been changed a couple times in the last week. These low flows make fish more accessible, but please think of these as catch-and-release stretches for wild fish.

FISHING: Fair
Chama River Watershed: Fair fishing below both dams, rainbows mostly below Abiquiu, rainbows and browns at El Vado. Lower flows (less than 100cfs) make fish more accessible, but please think of these as catch-and-release stretches for wild fish.

Jemez Area Streams: No change. Fishing best in the lower parts of the watershed, especially around Jemez Springs. Upper sections (especially canyons) are still a bit too cold.

Albuquerque Area Drains: In the Rio Grande "bosque" areas, canals have been dug to channel crystal-clear groundwater from adjacent field areas back into the river channel. The very opposite of irrigation ditches, these man-made spring creek "drains" are home to resident trout and bass. If you want a real winter challenge, try sneaking up of these fellows for a couple hours of fun.

FISHING: Fair
Chama River Watershed: Slow fishing below both dams. Lower flows (less than 100cfs) allow the water from the lakes to cool to air temperatures so quickly that it becomes hard to think of these as tailwaters.

Jemez Area Streams: Fishing okay in the lower parts of the watershed, especially around Jemez Springs with beadheads. Upper sections (especially canyons) are a bit too cold for best fishing. If you know where the various springs moderate the water temperature, then you know where to focus your outings.

Albuquerque Area Drains: In the Rio Grande "bosque" areas, canals have been dug to channel crystal-clear groundwater from adjacent field areas back into the river channel. The very opposite of irrigation ditches, these man-made spring creek "drains" are home to resident trout and bass.
