Sacramento River - Lower - July 23rd, 2008
supplied by: Sac River Outfitters
RECORDED:    97 °   FISHING: Great
The flows on the Lower Sac are currently at 12,000 cfs and will be dropping to 11,500 cfs by the 27th. The most productive area has been from Redding down to Anderson, with decent reports below the Anderson area. There are still a few steelhead being hooked and sometimes landed on the lower stretches as well. With the temperatures on the rise we are seeing more and more caddis hatching getting the fish to look up in the evenings.

FISHING: Good
The salmon fishing on the Trinity for quality fish is all but over. Most of the fish  are dark and good for the smoker. The steelhead fishing is pretty good depending on which section of river you are fishing. The flows are down to 350 cfs . The smith got a good shot of rain over the weekend and the first wave of salmon are down in the estuary below the hwy 101 bridge. The Sacramento is still seeing some nice fish move through and the fishing is still pretty good here also. For the rest of October and November we will be fishing for steelhead on the Trinity and Salmon fishing on the Smith and Sacramento. The weather is supposed to be good all week with the next chance of rain coming in on Friday.  Thanks Tim King

FISHING: Good
Redding-Trout fishing is good right now and this is the time of year that the fish really start feeding heavily. Go with a tiny piece of roe or a Glo Bug. Hot Shots will also work but not nearly as well as bait now.

Red Bluff-Salmon counts were way up last week, and limits were common from Red Bluff downstream to Woodson’s Bridge for anglers who fished stealthily and put in their time. The Kwikfish bite picked up, but after first light, fishing with roe definitely was the ticket.

Woodson Bridge-Water temperatures here are good and there are fish trickling in each day. Salmon anglers have been fishing with Kwikfish in the early mornings and then have been switching to back-bouncing eggs or dragging later in the day. The action has been anywhere from just under a fish a rod to limits depending on the day.

Colusa-About one in three boats were catching a king or two on spinners while anchored up upstream of Colusa.

Hello fishermen;   Again the fishing on the Sac is doing ok.  It is not as good as we all want it to be but I am catching fish each trip.  I have been averaging about 2 fish per trip.  The fish we are catching are in great shape all around 20 pounds.  I know that the fishing is going to get great any day now.  So if you are going just keep this in mind.  I have been getting all my fish on bait but there are a few biting plugs also.  We just need a lot more fish to start moving up and then we will start getting those great days of limits.  The word is from down river is that there are a bunch of fish moving up, so any day we will see them.  I sure hope it is tomorrow.   Hope to see you on the river.

Hello fishermen;   The fishing on the Sacramento river is just starting to get good now.  There are more fish moving in each day.  We are not catching limits every day but we are getting fish each trip.   I have been getting all my fish on bait.  Some days we are drifting and others we are back bouncing.  The fish are in great shape, nice bright ones and have been averaging around 20 pounds.   I have not seen any big ones yet but I know they are on the way.  This year should be a great one for the number of fish.  They are looking to get 1 million fish in the Sac this year.  I hope they are right and we will have to keep them from jumping in the boat.  Hope to see you on the river.

Redding-The good trout fishing continues from Redding all the way to Balls Ferry due to the coldwater curtain on Shasta Dam now, which keeps the water cooler for a long ways in the Sacramento. After the wet season, the current warm weather has some good hatches coming out for the fly guys using nymphs. Others drifted Glo-Bugs or roe, or backtrolled plugs for the trout. The shad action below Red Bluff dam is expected to come roaring back this week, but it was too early to tell at press time.

Red Bluff and Below-Shad are currently schooled up in huge numbers from the Red Bluff Diversion Dam and below.  Drifting 1/16th oz. chartreuse or hot pink jigs with sparkled chartreuse curly tailed grubs have been producing best results for drifters or anglers at anchor.  Shad bite is definitely best early in the morning or late in the evening just before sunset.  Shad fishing in the day time has remained fair for anglers pursing the hard fighting shad in the late morning and early to mid afternoon.  Look for the shad bite to dramatically increase in the heat of the day as Nothern Californa's traditional hot weather has arrived.  For the best of both worlds-to catch Sacramento River wild rainbows and Sacramento River shad combo opportunity available now through mid-July.

Redding-Trout fishing continued to be good from the Posse Grounds in Redding to well below Balls Ferry, but the lousy weather toward the end of the week chased a lot of anglers from the water. Fly fishermen had been doing well on small nymphs fished under indicators, but it’s pretty hard to fish a dead drift when a 30-mile per hour wind is whipping at your fly line. Spin fishermen were also hampered, but not as badly and were did pretty well on drifted Glo-Bugs from Posse Grounds to Redding, and on K-3 and K-4 Kwikfish downstream of Balls Ferry. Fish that were affected most by the weather were shad, which were concentrated below Red Bluff, but which tended to get lockjaw when temperatures dropped, the wind picked up, and the barometer needle started jumping around. The release at Keswick Dam was still 11,900 cfs over the weekend.

Redding-Trout fishing stayed pretty good, even in the high flows of last week, but the big native trout out to go on a rampage between Redding and Anderson this week as the release at Keswick drops to a little more than 12,000 cfs.

Redding-Great trout fishing was temporarily put on hold last week as flows were increased dramatically to take pressure off of Shasta Dam. Good trout fishing is expected to resume as the release is backed off to 12,000 to 15,000 cfs. Shad fishing should get underway around Red Bluff around the same time.

Sacramento-Striped bass fishing continued to be very good, especially at Miller Park and the mouth of the Feather River at Verona. The occasional sturgeon, including one estimated at 200 pounds, which was landed--and released--after a 1 1/2-hour fight were also surprising striper fishermen off Sandy Cove up to the Business 80 bridge.

Redding--High flows didn¹t seem to hamper trout fishing around Redding, except that most of the action switched from flies to spinning gear and drifted Glo-Bugs and bits of roe and a Quickie. The avenge size was up, too, with rainbows up to 4 1/2 pounds coming out to play.
