Salmon River (lincoln c.) - September 26th, 2005
supplied by: Creekside Fly Fishing
FISHING: Fair
Anglers are starting pick up some Chinook.  Silver Salmon fishing so far has been on the slow side.  The big problem this year is the crowds.  The fish are kegged up above the Hwy 101 bridge and that is where everybody is and there just aren't any spots for the fly fisher.  The best fly water is below the Hwy 101 bridge but salmon don't seem to be holding down there this season so far.  Hopefully they will some time soon.  Sea Run Cutthroat  are available in tidewater.

September 21, 2005 Fishing report brought to you courtesy of Rob Russell, STS Magazine: Tillamook Salmon are in! Fish have been caught from Memaloose Point to the jaws. The South Jetty and Coast Guard tower have been the brightest spots, but some anglers are reporting fish all the way up to reach-of-tide in the Wilson, Trask and Tillamook Rivers. This is the traditional kick-off for tidewater fishing coast-wide. There have already been good reports streaming in from every north-coast river. Nehalem anglers report fish from Roy Creek to the jaws, with the town of Nehalem producing the most fish. On the Nestucca, fish are showing from Pacific City up to Hannemans. The Salmon River is seeing a few fish, and the Siletz has been strong for several weeks. The hard part now is deciding where to go. Good fishing to all, Marilyn

Tides for this weekend are not the best tides for salmon fishing.  There is only a two foot swing in the tide change.  This might make salmon fishing difficult but should bother the sea-run cutthroat.   We like big changes from highs to lows.
Anglers are starting pick up some Chinook and Silver Salmon.  It's still early to get to excited but we are not far off from a good push of fish.  I would say mid-September through mid-October is the bet be for tidewater salmon.  Sea Run Cutthroat  are available in tidewater.

Salmon River - March 24th, 2005

FISHING: Good
Right now the salmon river is in good shape and is very fishable. Although the water is low, we are finding a mixed bag of both dark and fresh fish. The bite has been slow, but there are a few fish if you are willing to work for them. Nightcrawlers, egg sacs and flies are working well.

The warm temps should give us some much needed run-off. I don't think we will be seeing much high water this year?? Oneida lake is basically dry. They have sucked the water right out of it. It is scary. I see rocks I have never seen before. Don't look for big water on the Oswego anytime soon. This will probably make brown trout fishing more difficult this Spring. Yeah!

According to Capt. Tony Buffa Oneida Lake ice is still safe away from any tributaries. Expect to catch a good crop of 20+ inch walleyes this coming season. Seems as though the winter bite was slow overall. Not that many walleyes took a ride off the ice, so there is plenty left for the open water season.

Although we have had some slightly warmer days, the ice on sandy pond is good thanks to the cold nights. The perch bite has been good with small bait such as minnows working well. Remember that the pike season is closed.

Salmon River - February 7th, 2005

FISHING: Good
We finally got a break with the weather this week and the fishing conditions improved. Most anglers reported getting into fish.and are fishing the Lower Fly Fishing Zone, Schoolhouse Pool, Wire Hole, Ellis Cove and the Trestle Pool area. Under the current conditions use caution when wading along the slippery river banks and do not attempt to walk on the shelf ice. Eggs, nymphs, streamers and spey flies in sizes 8 to12 are working well.  There is good ice on most of Oneida Lake but walking can be a bit difficult because of the snow. There is an early morning walleye bite from Jewel to North Bay in 27-30 ft. of water and a slow perch bite for the rest of the day. The south shore is producing perch in about 30 ft. of water. Mousy grubs, spikes, buckeye minnows  and Swedish pimples are working well. The best bites are for the first two or three hours after sunrise and the last two hours before it sets. Most areas have between 6-10 inches of ice.

According to Larry Muroski of Larry's Oswego Salmon Shop:
The water level of the river is a fishable 9,000cfs and anglers are taking advantage of it. Steelhead and brown trout are taking worms, minnows, egg sacs and white  bucktail jigs. Anglers are ice fishing near Wright's Landing for perch and blue gills jigging with wax worms, spikes and minnows. There is about 10 inches of ice in many spots but as always check the ice before you venture out. Fulton's Lake Neahtahwanta is producing crappies at night using spikes, minnows and wax worms with teardrop and mousy jigs.

Salmon River - December 27th, 2004

FISHING: Fair
Happy Holidays! Sorry for the lack of updates but not much to say. I took some time off and spent it with family and friends. Yes, I do have a few friends!

Fishing Report.

My last day out before Christmas, we floated from Pineville to the Ball Park. We hit fish in only four, out of about twenty spots. We finally boated one below the 2a bridge on a float and blue egg sac. All the rest beat us up. Rob and Joe fished hard but the bites were soft and that is fishing.

Today I really wanted to put in at Pineville, but the slush was horrible. I haven't launched at Altmar since October and I didn't want to start today. I hate 335 cfs, Too many people and pressured fish. Plus, I see everyone running an illegal 10 foot leader and I just don't need the aggravation.

I told Ryan and Fred that the Oswergo might be fishable since it was running so high and maybe the slush wouldn't be too bad. So we headed west in 5 degrees and 20 knot winds! Yee Hah.

The river looked good. We immediately hit one fish, then another and then the slush came. We dropped down to lock 7, boated a nice steelhead there and it was over. High winds and heavy pack ice. The guys were right into it and if the fish are biting it isn't that bad.

We called it a 1/2 day and headed to the ramp. We will get them in April guys, Thanks again.

If the fishing was that good under those conditions, think how it will be later this week with the big warm-up that is forecasted. 40's right through the weekend.

I am open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Sunday. I promise good fishing if the slush clears and it will. Give me a call if you can get away.

Tight lines, Troy
