San Juan River: Still about the same--quite good. Flow stable at 250cfs and clear about 3feet. Little leeches and red midge larvae are working (Red Hot, Princess), but afternoons are bringing a few fish to the surface on parachute patterns, too.

We'll the old year went out with a bang, and the new year started with one! Great fishing so far all winter! We had lots of snow in the high country to the north and even some here. We had a great two weeks of cloudy weather and good fishing. Now the sun is out and yesterday (19th) was 55 and today is going to be even warmer! Beatis hatches are still good and the midges early and late in the day have been fun nymphing as well as dry fly action. There has been a bigger midge (18) in the afternoons the last few days I was out that are a olive brown and fish were looking for them! Before the sun came back out the dry fly fishing had been good every afternoon.
Near the dam, worms and midges are king as well as red larva and brown KF's (20-24) I also had one good day of sight fishing this area to fish working a big midge hatch. Red larva and the kf did the job very well. Worms always seem to be a good winter pattern now and then the fish seem to go nuts for them. We had a trip out last week, guide said all he fished was a single flesh worm all day and fish ate it every place he went. Eggs are also a good idea, even with the spawn over the fish are still looking for that egg in the water. But do be careful there are stil fish spawning and lots of redds all over the river.
Thole down- Float fishing has been great for me in this area. Lots of beatis and midges is always good for this section. Buggers and streamers also worked very well on a float I did last week. I always do better with buggers on cloudy days then on sunny days, same goes for leaches and streamers. PT and WD40 were the hot droppers for me on that float. But guides said that the last few days with all the sun fish are looking for midges more now. Midges are olive-brown (18) as well as black and brown KF's 20-24 and all the normal beatis patterns. Worms and eggs have been also working well in the thole area bout lots of small fish on them, I like to fish more natural patterns for the bigger fish in winter. Seems like there is no one on the river other them a few people on weekends Martin Luther King weekend is always a busy one for the river with so many people getting off on Monday. On the floats I have done there has been no or only one other boat floating down the whole section.
Over all snow pack is at 160% (but 50-60deg days is not going to help that) we should see high flows this spring! Fishing has been great all winter and the river looks great. Turnover was fast or never really happen this winter, so sight fishing has been good all winter. Look for the fishing to stay the same and even get better with all the warm nice weather we are going to have the next week!

Stream Flow Conditions [click here]
San Juan River: Flows are stable at 245cfs as they've been for awhile now. The river is fairly clean and fishing was good over the holiday week. Little chocolate things are working despite the lack of much Baetis emergence. Also the regular buffet of midges, eggs and little gray leeches.

Well the end of another year is here, fishing has been great so it looks like the year is going to go out with a bang! The river still is looking good and sight fishing has been the way to go. Worms and eggs are always a good idea this time of year! Brassie and red larva have also been great bugs. Since this report is only going to post a day at best I am going to keep the year end short.
I hope that everyone had a great visit the Juan this year and we look forward to seeing all of you here again next year!
Have a happy New Year Chris Karin and Gus @ Rainbow Lodge and Resolution Guide Service!

San Juan River: Little change with the flows at 250cfs. Colder weather and snow has kept off most folks. Active fish from the Upper Flats to the takeout, and the usual subsurface culprits are working along with a few dries.

Some fish are still rising to the hatches.
14-DAY FORECAST - Winter is here. Bring your rainjacket and warm clothes. The fishing is always good, but right now the fishing is excellent. The fish are into the spawing season and the big fish are moving around. We landed a 6 1/2 lb rainbow on 10/25! Come see why the San Juan is the hottest fishing in the southwest!

San Juan River - November 20th, 2004

FISHING: Great
Water Levels [click here]
This season just went by in a blur I am not sure where the year went! Over all I think that this was a great season, we had good winter snow and got Navajo Lake up a little over 60 feet then we had good spring and summer rain keeping lake levels near normal. Right now it looks like we are going to have a good winter there is lots of snow for this time of year and if we have a normal winter Navajo Lake should be back to normal levels. If Navajo gets back to normal or close we are going to have a week at 5000cfs next spring and that should be good for the river. We had some of the better beatis hatches this fall that I have seen in the last few year and they are still going strong! I think some of that has to do with the lower flow levels we are going to see all winter. If the fishing stays like it has been I think we are going to have a GREAT winter of fishing. From the dam to thole the fishing has been some of the best. Nymph fishing and all dry by 11 has been the norm for the last few weeks. There has been a few days where the sun poked out and the dry action was not as good but we have been seeing good dry fly action even on the sunny days! Midges are always king on the upper section of the river and the last few week has been just that, but beatis have been around in great numbers as well. From cable hole down I have been fishing red larva or a beatis to a small black or brown midge all week. The red larva seems to always work for me on cloudy days a little better then sunny days. But from around 10 or so I have been fishing the beatis (pt or rs2 gray or olive) to a #26 black midge emg. and doing very well. ESPN has been great for dry fly with #26 Adams or a #28 black midge. Fish are a little picky until the beatis start but a few on dries is always better! You might have to find a few new areas to fish as 250cfs is lower then most people remember and the fish HAVE moved into new areas. Most of the slack water is fishing great but new bugs and very specialized rigs are needed to fish this water right. Short rigs and just right weights are going to get you lots of fish in the slack water as not many people are willing to fish the slow pools!
Thole down- This section has been fishing great all fall! This area has had some great dry fly action. There are more beatis in this section of the river then any other and it shows in the afternoon. Hatches have been huge for about the last two weeks! From about 11-3 I have been able to fish dry with a #18 Adams and a #26 Adams. Most of the fish take the smaller fly but there have been some bigger beatis this fall and the fish are willing to grab a 18-22 more so then normal. Midge fishing has also been going in this section all week but there are a large number of smaller wild browns and rainbows (10-12") this year in this section. There was a planting of 35,000 3-4" fish this spring and they are all now all 10-14" and getting into the main river! The browns are starting to move up river to spawn so we have been getting lots of beautiful browns all colored up for the spawn in the 15-20" class.
Animas has been fishing very well all fall and we have had lots of guided trips in Durango this last 3 weeks. The Animas is only 50min from the Juan and a great river to spend the day.
There have been good numbers of ducks and geese on the cast and blast trips if anyone would like more info on this just give me a call.
