San Juan River - July 8th, 2011
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:    20 °   FISHING: Excellent
It's like that movie Bug's Life, starring Ants and Hoppers!  Long throws, long leaders perpendicular to the bank, a big upstream curve on the cast or mend, and try to keep your pants on for the slow rise to your bug.  Enjoy the cold water.  Enjoy water.

Pretty much the only game in town.  Bling midges, miracles, red annelids.  Look for some fluttering midges in the shady hours. Definitely keep some ant patterns in your boxes too.  Slowly walk the banks and look for fish at the margins; they're there for a reason.

Spring enema time on the San Juan.  At these big flows (6K and dropping), it would be nice to have a boat. I'd throw streamers and enjoy the scenery.  Maybe rig up two rods, one with a streamer and another with a deep nymph rig.

They haven't raised the flows yet; the new expected date is June 6, though we'll see.  Until then, midge piles are on the water through the mid day stretch, and some selective BWO feeding takes place in the afternoons.  All colors of midge larvae and pupae are getting it done, cluster midges on top, and olive/brown BWO patterns are the ticket, on the surface and beneath.

Pretty much the same as the last report.  A little cooler and cloudier, which means keep a baetis eye out.

Midge Nation!

All colors, all the time, though you might want to mix it up some with baetis patterns in the early afternoon.  Nothing really technical here; the fish are on the bite, pues give them something to eat.

Flows are due to be jacked the hell out of on May 23, toward a peak of 5000 cfs on May 27, where they will stay for one week before being dropped back to 500 cfs.  So be warned.

And please say your prayers for our friend Larry Johnson at Soaring Eagle Lodge, who is battling cancer.  He's winning so far, but keep the good vibes coming.

Pray for some clouds in the sky, in other words, a baetis hatch.  Don't count on it though.  Flows have normalized to about 500, so wading should be fine.  Same old: red larvae trailed pretty close by a size 22-24 midge pupa in black, gray, or olive.  Once the shadows get long, late in the day, look for some midges on the water and some noses.  Be prepared for baetis and midges.  I like a 22 patch adams followed by a juju midge in black.  Comparaduns too, griffith's, midge clusters or dead chickens.

"Baetis bonanza!" So says my secret mole up on the San Juan, though I'm certain this info is all around the fishosphere by now.  Apparently the naturals are of the olden days, big in other words, like a size 18.  We got some new midges in too, the foam wings, Cap'ns, discos.  Look for fish everywhere, just like you normally do on the Juan.

Midges in small sizes and all colors.  Look for some caddis biting too, especially lower down in the river.  It's pretty much summer everywhere so expect strange things to happen.

Nothing new on the Juan in terms of undiscovered sexy flies. All boats are scoring well.  Try some different patterns and see how they work.  Caddis might turn a few heads, purple worms.  Put your adventure hat on and come up with some new tricks.  Try fishing off the quality waters, as the fishing down below can get kind of exciting in the springtime.
