San Juan River - March 16th, 2004
supplied by: The Reel Life
FISHING: Good
San Juan River: No change, meaning good reports. Flow is around 240 and there have been lots of midge and BWO hatches on cloudy days. Still fishing better subsurfce, though, so take those midge larvae.

The San Juan is at 256 cfs with 3 feet visibility
FLOWS--256 CFS
CONDITIONS--mostly clear with 3 visibity
HATCHES - Midges and Baetis
FLIES - Big Mac Pupa, brown size 22 Red Midge Larva size 20-24 Olive and cream larva size 22 Thread body cdc baetis grey and chocolate size 22 Tav's Threadbody foam-wing, Dk. gray size 22 Mono Midge, gray, olive/black and gray/black size 24 Parachute Adams size 22-24 Tav's single midge size 24 Tav's GG size 20 Gray Scud size 22 SJ Worm rust and natural size 18 Glo-bugs(egg flies), cream and pink, size 20-22
FISHING CONDITIONS - Flows are remaining 250 cfs until the 1st of April. They should go up to 350 cfs then. Warm weather has the insects more active along with the fish. The wade fishing is very good above T-hole. The river is in good condition and the winter hatches are becoming spring hatches. This means a lot more bugs! The Baetis activity is really picking up from the Back Bowls above T-Hole downstream. Midge activity is still real good. Some fish are rising during overcast days.
14-DAY FORECAST - Spring has sprung! The temperatures are in the 50-70's and the fish are loving it! We could see any type of weather at this time of year, but right now it doesn't get any better then this! Come see why the San Juan is the hottest fishing in the southwest!

San Juan River - March 9th, 2004
supplied by: The Reel Life
FISHING: Good
Some good reports, although a little murkier water. The flashy red midges, egg paterns and worms have worked a bit better on quality waters.

San Juan River - March 3rd, 2004
supplied by: The Reel Life
FISHING: Good
No change, meaning pretty good reports. Flow is likely to remain around 250cfs for the winter and visibility about three feet. The 10" fish NMGF stocked below the Quality section are providing a little distraction, but red larvae, RS-2s and little leeches are working up higher for "San Juan-sized" trout.

San Juan River - February 20th, 2004

FISHING: Great

The normal winter turn-on has started!! Fishing has been great for the last week. Cloudy days and over all good fishing weather along with willing fish have made for some of the best days of the winter. Fish have been on the move some are getting ready for the spring spawn and others are just getting ready for the spring hatches. Float trips have had great luck all the way down the river, and wade fishing has been good all over most section of the quality water.
Thole to the dam has been my choice to fish on a odd day off as well as my #1 spots with clients the last week. Cable hole was fishing un-real last week on olive and gray midges as well as a 24 mono midge (gray). ESPN was also fishing well I had a few great days with a bugger and a OJ combo fished really wanted that bug to swing!! Lots of nice fish moving in all over the pocket water as the hatches get a little better.
Thole down has also been fishing great from a boat!! This section of the river is a little better to fish from a boat as the long deep slow moving pools are a little hard to fish on foot. But there is still good spots to stop the boat and wade for a bit. Dry fly action on this section is slow but the hatches are just now getting going!
Bait water was fishing OK last week by the lodge I had a little time to kill so I went out back and get 2 nice browns on egg patterns and 1 on a bugger, then I had to get back to painting the lodge rooms and getting every thing ready for the season.
Lower river or private water fishing slow to ok on the right day.
