San Juan River - March 11th, 2011
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:    64 °   FISHING: Great
Flows are good, fishing's good, depends on which midge stage you're imitating.  I think with all this sun you're going to want to drop your bugs down to where the fish are feeling safe.  Speaking of getting it down, try a sculpzilla near bankside structure, or just structure.

Don't forget the Fly Fishing Film Festival at the Hotel Albuquerque tonight at about 6:00 or March 25 at The Lodge at Santa Fe.  Check out www.TheF3T.com for details.  Proceeds go to the San Juan River Guides Association.  Gracias.

It's improving.  The water's a tad stained but catches are becoming regular for those with good midge discipline.  If we could just catch a couple clouds, maybe we'd have some baetis popping more.

Word on the street is the fishing's been a little off.  Reporting anglers say it's been hard to get into a groove, but that the midges in all colors will have their turn, eggs, and worms.  Just keep changing that stuff up.  If it looks like it'll be a slow day for me on the Juan, for whatever reason (including I suck), I'll tie on a leechy streamery leech and just chuck it around.  Enjoy the scenery.  Some weather changes coming so things can change real fast.

I'll call it midgekreig, what's happening right now on the Juan.  All colors, mainly dark, are working and the smallest sizes seem to be getting the most eats.  Attractors will be helpful too.  I'd go with a chartreuse or pink egg pattern or a bunny leech.  That's if you're subsurface.

On top, try griffith's or some other hopefully better floating cluster pattern.  Crowds are thinnish; you should have no problem finding water.

San Juan River - January 18th, 2011

RECORDED:    39 °   FISHING: Great
Best these days, at least according to one opinion, when bugs are on the water.  When it's sparse on top, I'd throw a leach, either with a Bshot stuck on the head or with a slip sinker on a somewhat stout tippet.  Jig it with the static shot, or strip it with the slip sinker (this will create a jigging motion on the fly).

If you're nymphing, try a very small zebra midge as your bottom fly, and lead it with a thread larva or some midge emerging johnny flash or RS2, all real small.

Stay tuned for some exiting stream rehab in the braid area.  DGF is going to tackle erosion and create low flow hidey holes.

Weather and Lunar Phases

San Juan River - December 30th, 2010

RECORDED:    20 °   FISHING: Excellent
It's going to be cold on the Juan for a little while.  Not to worry, the fish are on the grab for very small midge emergers, annelids, and midge adults.  The water's a little off color, but the fish aren't having trouble finding their eats.  Midges are clustering on the surface, so a Griffith's or cluster midge will cover you there.  Foam wing RS2s in brown and gray are doing well subsurface, as are bling midges and miracles.  All reports indicate that 6X tippet makes a difference.  And the takes are very light.  Matt Clifton at The Octagon is rocking them on black leech patterns.

San Juan River - December 22nd, 2010

RECORDED:    55 °   FISHING: Good
Flows are near 500, and fish are being caught on a variety of methods.  Me, I would try a gotcha (yes, the bonefish fly) with a quarter down cast, a rolled steelhead mend, and a slow and consistent retreive.  Or I would put a sliding cone sinker on it and fish it faster.  I'm heading up there this weekend, and I also plan to run a zebra in brown, red, and olive, or an annelid, beneath a bugmeister dry.  I swear, my cojones are really that big.  Seriously, it's a wonderful time to be on the Juan, especially with the weather not so dang cold.  I'd be running chartreuse eggs, red flossy worms, and foam wing RS2s.  Regular RS2s too.

Chartreuse eggs, peach eggs, pink eggs.  Red annelids.  Johnny Flash Chocolate.  Concentrate on getting good drifts.

Weather and Lunar Phases

San Juan River - October 21st, 2010
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:    67 °   FISHING: Fair
Recent weather has caused some silt slugs to enter the river from the washes, suppressing some the fishing somewhat.  Fish gotta eat though, right?  Even if there were impacts on the invertebrates, I would work worms, eggs, and streamers.  Flashy midge imitations like red hots, desert storms, and discos will become tastier bites as the water clears.  I like brown wooly buggers too.

RECORDED:    72 °   FISHING: Excellent
Getting to be Simon time, cottonwood leaves and pink willow switches.  Some fun midging to be had, smaller sizes being better.  See if you can't pick out a rising head and get it before moving on to the next one.  I dare you to do that without being distracted by other fish.
