Sol Duc River - October 7th, 2004
supplied by: Fishing Northwest
FISHING: Good
The Big Picture: We are getting a small dose of precipitation as I type this report, hopefully it will amount to something, we do need it in order to get the rivers back up and fresh schools of Salmon moving in. FLY FISHING REPORT: 10/05/04: The Rivers It's been meager pickn's for sea-run Cutthroat Trout, a few here and there but not the usual "good fish'n" we get this time of year. We are still finding a few Steelhead around the confluence of the Bogachiel and Calawah rivers and a few up on the Sol-Duc River but it's prime time now to be targeting Fall Silver Salmon and for the next few weeks that's were we will be focusing our attention. The Lake Water temps are dropping and the Trout & Steelhead have become ravenous. Small "Seal Buggers" and "cone head Wooley Buggers" are the ticket sub-surface while large Madam X's and Stimulators have been doing the trick on the surface. Many of the fish are weighing in excess of 5 lbs!! < Here is an awesome shot of Dr Dave and son Phil with Phil's first Steelhead. 08/29/04
Sol-Duc (sole~duck) River-- Still pretty decent in here, It's been real low and clear but Fall Silvers are making their way through and as soon as we get a good amount of precipitation the King's should really start to roll in. Sol-Duc River Cam [CLICK HERE]
Bogachiel River -- A few Silvers and a few new Fall Kings moving through, no great shakes though.. CLICK HERE: To go to Bogachiel River water level gage
Calawah River-- Low and slow, desperately need some rain to make this river fish. CHECK OUT OUR "Calawah River Cam" [CLICK HERE] NOTE: Wild Steelhead catch & Release reg's are in effect. CLICK HERE: To go to Calawah River USGS hydrograph
HOH RIVER --when it is in decent shape the King Salmon fishing has been good. CLICK HERE: To go to USGS hydrograph of the HOH RIVER Queets River-- Plenty of Silver Salmon in here right now, mostly down low and there are a few Kings pushing up but as soon as we get some rain it's really gonna light up in here. CLICK HERE: To go to USGS hydrograph of the Queets River
Quillayute River -- Very spotty, the Salmon have been very tentative about coming up in earnest with the river levels so low.
Dickey River -- I noticed several Silvers slapping around in the pool below the D.5000 bridge 2 days ago so I'm sure there are at least a few fresh Silvers making their way up this little river. The best option is to work the mouth of the river on the high tide and then work your way upstream after the High ebb.
Lower Quinault River-- Very Good, To fish this river you will need a Quinault Nation licensed fishing guide. Please Contact: www.lettypotter.com give them a call and I'm sure you'll have a fine time

Sol Duc River - September 2nd, 2004
supplied by: Fishing Northwest
FISHING: Good
General Fly Fishing Info: Overall there is some extremely decent Summer-run Steelhead and Silver Salmon fly fishing to be had out here....but do not expect the fish to come up and grab just any old thing you huck out there. With the rivers low and getting lower the fly pattern and presentation technique have become critical. For the straight scoop on what's happening on a daily basis or to purchase effective fly patterns contact Bob Gooding at Olympic Sporting Goods 360-374-6330
Sol-Duc (sole~duck) River-- Not to shabby, plenty of Summer Silver Salmon and a generous dose of Steelhead up near the Sappho hatchery. Still a few rather rough looking Sockeye in the river and a healthy smattering of sea-run Cutties.

Sol Duc River - August 16th, 2004
supplied by: Dickson Flyfishing Steelhead Guides
FISHING: Fair
I have still been running back and forth from the O.P. to the local waters. Putting some time on the road. On the Sol Duc I did most of my damage in a hole that I would walk guys into in the evening. There are a few nice walk in spots on the lower part of the river. Sockeye and SRC's were the ticket. That is pretty much the key right now fishing at first light and last light. You can still catch fish during the day but it takes getting the fly a little closer to their noses.
Here is a side note from the Wild Steelhead Coalition:
REQUEST FOR LETTERS! THE AUGUST 28 STEELHEAD MORATORIUM HEARING IS FAST APPROACHING!
PLEASE HELP SAVE OUR WILD STEELHEAD! SEND OUT YOUR LETTERS TO THE FISH & WILDLIFE COMMISSION. TELL THEM THAT YOU WANT THE TWO-YEAR WILD STEELHEAD MORATORIUM TO REMAIN IN PLACE! AT THIS TIME WE ARE ON THE BRINK OF HAVING THE MORATORIUM REVERSED. MAIL YOUR LETTERS TO: Washington Fish & Wildlife Commission 600 Capitol Way North Olympia, WA 98501-1091 OR E-MAIL: Commission@dfw.wa.gov
Mailed letters have more weight then do email letters so if you can take the time to type one out and mail it in that would be great along with an email.
GET THOSE CAR POOLS ORGANIZED! While letters are vitally important, being in attendance at the Bremerton hearing on August 28 will do even more for our cause. The City of Forks is planning to bring a large contingent of people who want the moratorium rescinded. We will need more people than ever to meet this challenge. If you plan to testify you will need to have a copy of your testimony for each of the commissioners and other officials who will be at the hearing. Even if you do not plan to give testimony, your presence is still imperative.
Thank you for your continued support. Les Johnson, VP Communications WILD STEELHEAD COALITION

Sol Duc River - August 10th, 2004
supplied by: Fishing Northwest
FISHING: Fair
We just had a desperately needed spate of rain, however brief it was enough to raise the Sol-Duc River an inch or two and bring in a few more fresh Summer Silver Salmon. by tomorrow though this river will again be gin clear and basically un-navigable. The Hoh River was fishing "decent" up until yesterday, right now though it is out running very high and murky.
It was pretty good in here today. We ran into a good number of fish, quit the variety pack actually. 1 King, 3 Silvers, 3 Sockeye and several nice little Cutthroat. We were using ultra light spinning equipment and had our best success on the Silver Salmon using small chrome and green spinners. Note: It is strictly catch and release on ALL Wild Steelhead.

Sol Duc River - July 24th, 2004
supplied by: Fishing Northwest
FISHING: Fair
Sol-Duc (sole~duck) River-- It was a tough day in here yesterday, we had very low gin clear water and extremely standoffish fish, landing only 2 Sockeye. However it has not been unusual to get into a multi species rally recently, for instance, last Saturday we had 5 Sockeye, 1 Steelhead, 1 Silver Salmon and 7 Cutthroat brought to hand in less than 4 hrs!! and there are still a few (very few) fresh King Salmon moving/crawling up this little river. Note: It is strictly catch and release on ALL Wild Steelhead. Had a real tough go of it on Tuesday, we raised quit a few Cutthroat but nary a Steelhead, Saw several nice Steelhead in "strange" spots but could not get them interested in a skated fly. There are decent numbers of Steelhead in the lower Calawha R. and Bogachiel R. but the fish are getting hit pretty darn hard. General Info: Fly fishermen can count on a Knudsen Spider, Wooley bugger or smallish streamer pattern, sizes #4 to #8, swung, swam or twitched near the bottom. Tie up with a longish 6'-7' non tapered clear mono tippet of say 8 to 10lb (2X) > blood knotted to a 2 ft heavy mono butt section > connected the butt section to a 12 ft tapered medium sink Rio or Airflo Steelhead leader > link this to you dry line and you are in business. During the morning and evening hours try going completely dry, nothing fancy here, just a riffle hitched "muddler" or "bubble head" on a long leader slowly skated over the nose of a "Summer-run".
