Sol Duc River - May 6th, 2004

FISHING: Fair
The season is officially closed for Steelhead and Trout on the rivers right now and will re-open on June 1st. We have been take a swing at the few Spring Kings that are in the Sol-Duc River...with limited success...as those out migrating and out of season Steelhead seem to be intercepting the fly before the "Springers" get a chance. We actually did hook up with one very hefty King on an articulated blue bunny leech but it was a short lived experience for my client. The hook bent open while the rod was pointed at the fish and...adios Salmon.

Low and slow right now, plenty of out migrating Steelhead and a handful of Springers but definitely in need of some rain.
Note: It is strictly catch and release on ALL Wild Steelhead above the Sappho Salmon Hatchery and regulations stipulate that only artificial lures with single barbless hooks may be used up here NO BAIT. The WDFG has been vigorously patrolling this upper section of the Sol-Duc River and the fines are substantial for violators.

Fished in here today, we landed 3 nice late season Wild Steelhead and aaallmost landed a very hefty Spring King on a no#4 Vibrax and 8lb line.

The Bogachiel and Sol-Duc Rivers have been very consistent, still quite a few fresh Steelhead moving through but the majority of fish encountered are post spawn. Water temps and river flows have been perfect for "shwingers" and "nymphers" alike.

FISHING: Fair
Sol Duc: 2 boards; very low, 6-8 feet of vis. Steelhead heading up, steelhead spawning riffles (careful where you walk, and steelhead heading out. Bright Spring Chinook and Searun Cutthroat showing up! As Jonathan lives within striking distance, our plan is to continue to fish the Duc throughout the summer. Sinktips are the drill. Flash flies & G.P's will catch the Chinook. Marabous and leeches for the steelhead. Keep you posted as we move into summer.

Decent, Water is a bit on the low side right now. There have been several Spring King salmon landed in the past few days and there is still a minor influx of fresh Steelhead.

Good overall, a recent smattering of very fresh but fairly small Steelhead moved up in the last few days. No real influx of "Springers" yet. Water condition is excellent right now.
