Really low and clear in here right now. It's about 50/50 on fresh vs down river Steelhead right now and I have not seen or heard of any real beasts being hooked or landed in the past several days. Pat Graham fly fished the middle run today and they did bring to hand a dandy fresh buck of approximately 11 lbs.

Note: It is strictly catch and release on ALL Wild Steelhead above the Sappho Salmon Hatchery and regulations stipulate that only artificial lures with single barbless hooks may be used up here NO BAIT. The WDFG has been vigorously patrolling this upper section of the Sol-Duc River and the fines are substantial for violators.

Depending on who you talk to it's dead as a door nail in here or it's real good...go figure. I recently (03/14/04) had a 4 fish day in the lower end and we really didn't pound it all that hard, just goes to show you never know what the next cast might turn up...

Fished well on the fly in the upper section a couple of days ago. We ran into a real mix of fish, incoming and outgoing Steelhead, big healthy Cutthroat and several many Chaogies AKA White fish

Had a fine day in here with the Bukovenik brothers from Port Angeles...Wasn't red hot by any means but we did manage to convince a few fresh Steelhead to bite and saw several headed upstream for parts unknown.

The fantasy for many of my clients has been to pin a huge Wild Winter Steelhead on a classic down and across swing, and we did!! a 38" on the lower Sol-Duc on Monday!!

The stark reality however is that this will not occur with any great frequency until our water warms a few more degrees. We have been just lay'n the Shmak down on em with the "poly yarn dry fly"..AKA...indicator, nymph and dropper. Over all we have not had a day recently were we have not been able to feel several of these incredible fish pull line off of the reel.

Pretty slim pick'ns for the past few days, one here two there has been what I have heard from just about every guide I spoke with. The upper section has been stale also, most all of the fish are heavily colored and ready to spawn. We are getting a shot of "weather" right now, maybe it will bring on it's heels a few fresh two toners.
