South Holston River - March 14th, 2010

RECORDED:    45 °   FISHING: Excellent
I really don’t know how to start this report! Josh and I were both itching to float the Watauga River. With high flows and prior commitments and awesome hatches on the Soho we just hadn’t made it over in a couple weeks.
Well once we got to the put in the TVA had surprised us with an un scheduled generation. Heavy rains had blown the Doe River out and put a lot of off colored water in the river. We floated anyway!

The fishing with all the bad conditions at once was rough. After a brief shower and only a couple fish we decided to row out. At the ramp our truck hadn’t been shuttled and it took us an extra 45 minutes to get squared away.

So now we are underway once again. We grabbed a quick lunch and headed to the South Holston River. And once there high water, again the TVA had changed the schedule.

Feeling super deflated we drove up river to find the water was actually falling! First time for the day we were in luck. Falling water normally equals good fishing. Josh wanted to scout one of my favorite spots for a guide trip later in the week so we found a parking spot. Josh sprang from the truck and began grabbing gear at a hectic pace. I ask what was his hurry, He pointed at the water and said”LOOK!!!”. The surface was alive with rising fish. Some of these risers were real bruisers. Changing rivers had me rigged all wrong, so all I could do is turn my back and try to quickly rig with the sound of constant splashing ringing in my ears. Which for a dry fly fisherman such as myself is torture! Just seconds later McFadden’s voice broke rise sounds, “FISH ON FISH ON!” I turned in time to see the fish bend his Winston Biix almost double. This made getting a good knot tied even harder. I had a good idea of what bugs were on the water so I tied on a straight up BWO & off I went.

Years of hatch hunting and dry fly fishing the Soho has taught me a few tricks to use during bigger hatches. I started scanning the water for bigger fish. I see a good fish rise and fired a cast to it. And from no where a 13 inch bow hammered the dry. After a quick release I spotted a big fish rise. After a few cast made a little tricky by the wind, FISH ON!! A gorgeous 17inch brown.

For the next 45 minutes fish were coming to hand ever few cast alot of 12 and 13 inchers. I found another big fish rising and then a huge fish rose just in front of me, I was literally drifting the fly closer to my legs than the tip of my rod. I never hooked that fish but a few cast later I was in a war with an 19inch brown. This was a feisty long thin fish that just did not want to come in.After landing my second fish over 17 I called it a day and headed to the truck.
Josh came to the truck and being the hatch had slowed wanted to try 1 more spot down river. After a short drive we hiked into a spot we don’t fish as much as we should. I carried a streamer rod for some deep holes for Josh to use. I didn’t plan on fishing. At the first spot Josh stakes claim to the next run, so I started tossing a streamer 3rd or 4th cast and WAM!!! A heavy heavy fish then slack! DANG… Josh was rigging so he let me know that it looked huge too bad it got off… (THANKS BUDDY). The day started off so bad then got so good I just couldn’t complain. So I stripped in, checked my rig, and cast again. WAM WAM FISH ON Heavy fish after a brief tug of war I netted the beautiful colored up 22″ Heavy rainbow. I was excited i ran out of the water like a little school girl so Josh could snap a pic. What a day.
Guide,
Kevin Lowe

South Holston River - February 28th, 2010
supplied by: East Tennessee Angler
RECORDED:    23 °   FISHING: Fair
Mike and Bill from Pennsylvannia came down for a day float on the South Holston River. The previous weather was very cold and windy. The warming trend was supposed to start this day and it didn’t happen. The temperatures never got much above freezing, but these guys being from Pennsylvannia it didn’t affect them too much.

With very little bug activity starting off, we used some deep nymph rigs. Bill was the first to strike with a gorgeous river born South Holston Brown Trout. We fished the upper section of the river bringing several fish to hand on nymphs and midges, till the water began to fall a little quicker than expected. The dropping water did produce the blue wing olive hatch and the midges started coming off.

With a brief row through some rocky places too keep from getting stuck, we made our way down river and set up for some dry fly action. With the hatch becoming very steady I swapped both guys over to dry dropper rigs. With a blue wing dry and one of my favorite midge patterns below, both guys continued to bring fish to hand throughout the evening. We decided with the water dropping out early, to fish through most of the day and take a late lunch.

With the dry fly action starting to slow we had a good bowl of home cooked chili (aside from Mike who got stuck with a store bought can of Vegetarian Chili.) After this late lunch, the bugs started to dwindle as the temperatures began to drop so we swapped back over to nymph rigs. Now with the water at it’s lowest point we were able to get out of the boat and really work over some runs. Both Mike and Bill continued to bring fish to the net with nymph rigs. Mike hooked a really good rainbow only for it to pop loose. Despite cold temperatures, snow and windy conditions,

I had a great day on the water with these guys. It was a pleasure to fish with a couple of guys who instantly picked up the mending and getting good drifts. Even though the day had been a little slower than we had liked, it had been a good day of fishing with Mike and Bill.

Even after Josh reminded me multiple times to charge my camera battery, I forgot. Luckily Bill had his camera and took some good shots of the day which we’ll put up as soon as we get them.

“Kevin,

Thanks for a great time fishing last week.  Mike and I had lots of fun reminiscing about the day’s events during our drive over the mountains to Charlotte.  We certainly enjoyed our time on the river and definitely would book with you guys again and will recommend you to anyone we know headed that way.”- Bill

South Holston River - April 5th, 2009

RECORDED:    64 °   FISHING: Excellent
I got to hit the SOHO alone sunday morning. Its been awhile since I have gotten to fish all by myself. I knew with the nice weather it was going to be crowded. So I went down river and found a good spot open. I geared up and hit the water rigged with dry dropper. The dry was a standard BWO and the dropper was a pattern from  Team NC tier Larry Hoffelburg. I seen several fish feeding in the surface film, in slow water but had rigged a little deep so chose to head to a deeper run. A few cast and I had missed 1 on the dry, then, BAM!!!! The dry ripped under and alot of weight came racing down the spine of the rod. I knew it was a better fish and played it accordingly. After only a brief fight I seen this beautiful bow, As I stuck the net in the water it flipped out and tore of down stream. After a short run an out of breath FAT boy netted a nice 20 plus inch bow. After a quick pic and a release , I reflected on the day( which had just begun). It would have been my dads birthday today and only one hour before I had placed flowers on his headstone. Fishing has always been my therapy and I just thought to myself at that moment I HOPE DAD SEEN THAT!!! I got back to fishing bringing another 12 or so fish to hand. About 5 of those on the dry and the rest on this crazy nymph. Its a cool feeling catching fish on a pattern you know no one else is fishing. Fish took either fly with force and how fun is that with a 3wt!? Around lunch Josh showed up and we went and eat. After lunch we changed spots and the fishing slowed so after landing a dozen or so more between us, we decided to head to kingsport for some smallie fishing .That report later!

RECORDED:    71 °   FISHING: Great
The weather has held out for a few days. I couldn’t imagine it getting better from the day before but…. IT DID! Temps were in the 70’s with sunny skies. I had an evening trip with Robert Dillard from NC Here on the South Holston. We found our first choice spot open geared up and hit the water. We had fish rising immediately. We rigged with a bwo and a nymph dropper and started. Robert hooked up quick bringing several fish to hand in only a few minutes. A bwo hatch had started and the fish were responding well. A very nice fat brownie about 17” hammered the dry and the fight was on. After a quick release several more fish were brought to hand with some gorgeous colored up bows. Robert hooked into another nice brown on the nymph in some quicker water that kept a nice bend in the 4 wt. As the evening progressed the hatch dwindled and the fishing slowed so we called it a day. It was a pleasure to fish with Mr. Dillard look forward to next time. If you would like more info on the South Holston or a guided trip check us out on the web or give us a call.

www.hatchhunters.com

We have had a wide range of weather patterns here on the South Holston river and the Watauga river. This past weekend we had clouds and rain. The blue wing olives were out in force on both rivers. These were some of the largest hatches of bwo's I have seen in awhile. Large numbers of fish to hand on both rivers. Including several over 16". These rivers are fishing great and the forcast for the upcoming weekend has projected temps in the high 60's! Fishing in a T shirt earlie march to colored up bows and super strong brown trout, Dont get much better!  GUIDE,

The weather has been a mixed bag latley but the fishing has been very good! Spawning areas that have been close for a few months have re opened. And the fish in these areas are hitting well. Looks like were in for a super year! We have had alot of rain and if it keeps up river conditions will be the best we have seen in several years.

The South Holston tailwater is fishing very well. Dry dropper rigs are the key. BWO's hatches are occuring and midges are coming off well, as normal. A local midge patter the "stripper" has been working very good. The fly gets its name from the way the materials are derived, by "stripping" a peacock herl to use like a biot! Black and gold bead heads on this fly work well depending on the amount of sunshine and sizes 22 & 24 are best! Black fly dry patterns are a hot item on sunny days. We have a new pattern for this flies imitation that is working great!  Recent rains has local rivers waters running higher and what a relief with this past summers drought! Some warmer weather has also entered the area getting lots of bugs stirring around!

This report is for the Watauga River

The watauga is fishing great! Recent rains have water levels up to a better level than we have seen in a year. Hatches of olives and even some caddis are happening now! Lots and lots of midges also. We have even seen terrestrials in several stomach pump samples as of late.  If bigger flies are more to your liking this is a river for you. Large wolley buggers and leech patters weighted heavy on sink tip line are producing some very nice fish over 18"! Day floats are providing over 50 fish days with all types of water to fish, from slow deep pools to 1000's of independant runs to large riffles!
