Winter time weather has put hatches down some, in return taking alot of pressure off the river. Winter time is great to fish the South Holston no crowds and great fishing! Even with the cool weather we are getting hatches of BWO's and Black flies.Most of the big browns have left the beds and are now looking to EAT!!! Big fish are taking normal nymphs and midges , even small dries! With the spawning areas that have been closed for the spawn opening back up tomorrow this action will pick up even more! Our sub surface flies of choice are bead head zebra midges, midge pupae's and BHPT's 18's to 22's, dries cdc olives, sparkle duns 20's to 22's And Black fly larvae and adult patterns are working well 24's to 28's. One of the keys this time of year is small small flies. The SOHO is fishing well! The browns have moved into their spawning areas. Even with sulpher hatches almost gone fish are still rising to cdc sulphers in the sunny areas. The blue wing olives are here and the fish are really liking it! One of our guides had a wonderful hatch yesterday evening and fished only a small bwo dry for several hours, and landed several nice fish. Our go to dry flies are cdc sulphers 16 & 18's in the sun, bwo's 20 & 22's in the shade! This time of year is really good midge fishing. Our go to sub surface flies are zebra midges from 18 to 20's. Don't be afraid to change up with the colors of your midges red, gray, black and browns are all good color patters on the soho.Early morning fish are sipping emergers, any small parachute style bwo emerger or pmd's in 22 & 24's with well placed cast work well! Keep your eyes open for sporadic hatches thru out the day even into late eve. Cooler weather is finally moving in here in east tn. The cooler weather has slowed the sulpher hatch, but increased the blue wing and midges coming off the water! Lots of Big fish are moving up river to spawn! And they are eating!!!! Several fish well over 20" have been caught in the past week! As of today 11-1-07 two section's of the river have been closed for the spawn. Even with these areas closed there is plenty of good spots to fish up and down river. Late eve. is a good time to see some good hatches! BWO dries in 20 & 22 are a good bet for surface flies, Flash back pt's & zebra midges of several colors in sizes 18 & 20 are excellant sub-surface patterns right now! Even with the current drought conditions tail water fishing in upper east tn is good! With unseasonable warm weather the sulphers are still hatching up and down the river, and the trout are really keying in on cdc sulphers in 16 & 18 on top. Some olives are coming of in smaller sizes 20 to 24's! Dry dropper rigs are working well. Flash back pt's and several zebra midge patterns 16's &18's are working great as a dropper. A local pattern "Dukes sulpher nymph" Is really HOT in upper sections of the south holston!
