Taos Area Waters - October 8th, 2009

RECORDED:

FISHING: Good
The key will be time of day; waterways with less water in them - Rios Chiquito, Hondo, Santa Barbara, de la Olla - are more influenced by cold nighttime temps. So they'll take longer in the morning to wake up. Still, a few midday fishing hours during Indian summer can do a body good.

FISHING: Good
Same old story, low stagnant flows, good fishing in the evenings. Watch how large you loom as you approach these finicky fish. Some horrible days have been reported on the Santa Barbara, and I imagine I could find similar reports about Pot Creek or the Rio Hondo. The reason? I don't know, but I imagine it has something to do with fish feeling exposed and running at the slightest provocation.

FISHING: Good
Basic small creek fishing. Run the basic dry flies, attractor to imitative, big to small. If you must nymph, consider unweighted stuff, as you will snag the bottom less. I'm ready for the Pueblo to begin fishing in the gorge. Here's to the end of irrigation season.

Taos Area Waters - July 27th, 2009

RECORDED:

FISHING: Excellent
del Pueblo is better than del Charro. Chiquito, Hondo, Pot Creek, and the Santa Barbara are all good. Make sure you have a big elk hair caddis on you in tan; the spruce moths are out and the trout will often take them before anything else.

Taos Area Waters - July 2nd, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
85 °
FISHING: Excellent
It's all good now, with non-rain runoff finally over. The rain, however, might cause periodic muddy water, but that's what red San Juan worms are for. Otherwise, it's dapping or bow and arrow casts on the Chiquito, Hondo, Santa Barbara and the like. The Pueblo near the gorge might have some good fishing in the shady hours, but it will generally be too warm for midday fishing.

FISHING: Good
Creeks, three or four foot leaders, brown bugger, hare's ear, or Peking caddis. Fish it tight in Pot Creek, the meadows of the Little Rio, Hondo, or Chiquito. Fatty fish.

Taos Area Waters - May 19th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:

FISHING: Good
You will encounter high water, but it will be warm enough (except maybe the Hondo and Red up high) for fish to want to feed. The creeks, Hondo, Chiquito, Pot, Little Rio, will give up fish if you dap heavy nymphs in bankside pockets; fish will congregate there and feel safe in dirty water. Over U.S. Hill, the del Pueblo can be fished the same way. I like renegades with shot on the head, or just weighted buggers with white or grizzly hackle in them. Try our mini buggers.

FISHING: Excellent
That means the Cimarron, Coyote Creek, and Eagle Nest only. The Cimarron is smoking, on pretty much every nymph but the kitchen sink (though I probably wouldn't rule that out). Elsewhere, water will be muddy or really high and fast on the Pueblo, Santa B, Chiquito, Pot Creek, Hondo, and Red. Head over the hill.

Taos Area Waters - April 20th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
58 °
FISHING: Excellent
Due to the creeks being mostly muddy, I'd head over to the Cimarron for the best fishing. They're releasing some water finally, and the browns should be on a serious scud and cranefly bite. For some off the charts fishing, call Cimarroncita at 575 376-2376 and work something out. Insane fish numbers on that place.
The lake should be fine too if you can stand the wind. Bring at least a 6 weight if it's blowing. Then check out coyote creek; they should be on dries soon if the recent snow melts off soon.

Taos Area Waters - April 6th, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
50 °
FISHING: Fair
Depending on runoff and air temps, you should be able to find reliable fishing in the creeks. I'd go Chiquito, Pot, Little Rio, and Santa Barbara. For me at this time of year, going over to the other side is the best bet. Since I was a kid, Coyote Creek and the Cimarron have been money in the middle spring shoulder season. Oh yeah, if you fish Coyote or Cimarron, stop by the south end of Eagle Nest and dip a thermometer in. If temps are much above 45, consider fishing through the coves.
