The Week of Feb. 25 – March 3, 2012
Weather Conditions: Clear skies
Air Temp: Averaged around 81 degrees F, with a high around 85
Water Temp: Mid- to Upper-70s
Wind: Dominated from ESE
Tides: Rising tide throughout the mornings for beginning of the week, with high tide in the late afternoon by week’s end
Moon Phase: First Quarter Moon on Wed., Feb. 29
Ideal tides and clear skies led to some good fishing this week. Permit were found feeding both on the flats and in the lagoons; bonefish were tailing on the outer hard-bottom flats all week. Anglers landed bonefish on Micro Crabs, Micro Shrimp, and small Bitters, and had permit follow various Merkin patterns as well as Micro Crabs.
Wes O. and Jerry R. of Colorado fished with guide Michael for the week. The anglers devoted time on the flats seeking out bonefish and pursued permit both on the flats and in the Central Lagoon. Wes and Jerry hooked six permit and also landed multiple bonefish. Hot flies for Wes included Charlies and small Bitters, as well as San Pedro Worms.
Mike B. of Chicago spent his week chasing bonefish and permit with guide Daniel. Mike was successful in landing his first permit ever on a fly! An experienced conventional fisherman, Mike learned a lot about fly-casting and presentation from Daniel, which allowed him to not only land the permit but multiple bonefish as well.
Also joining us for a full week of fishing was Dave H. of Arizona. Dave pursued bonefish and permit with guide Dion. Plagued by an unfortunate pre-trip back injury, Dave made the best of his situation by spending a lot of time casting to tailing bones on the flat in front of the lodge – and loved every second of it.
Chris R. spent half of his week fishing with guide Dubs and half of his week diving with Dive Instructor Alex. In his few days of fishing, Chris managed to land a permit as well as a handful of bonefish.
Look at the calendar and you’ll see that graduation and wedding “gift season” is rapidly approaching. Maybe this is a good time to think about a week of permit, bonefish, tarpon and other critters in English-speaking Belize for yourself or that soon-to-be graduate or groom/bride in your life.

The Week of Feb. 18-25, 2012
Weather Conditions: Sunny
Air Temp: Averaged around 80 degrees F, with a high around 84
Water Temp: Mid- to Upper-70s
Wind: Dominated from ESE
Tides: Falling tide throughout the day for beginning of the week, with high tide around noon by week’s end
Moon Phase: New Moon on Tues., Feb. 21
This week we spelled “Turneffe” – P-E-R-M-I-T! Anglers and guides found singles and schools of permit nearly every day, both on the flats and in the Central Lagoon. Not to mention, most of the permit caught were of substantial proportions, ranging anywhere from 12- to almost 25-pounds. Bonefish were also feeding readily in the flats throughout the week. Hot flies for permit were various shrimp patterns as well as the Turneffe Crab (tan #8). Anglers were successful with bonefish using Crazy Charlies and small Bitters patterns.
Anne B. celebrated her birthday this week by landing bonefish and a permit (while wading!) with guide Daniel. Anne was joined by family members David, Cindy M., and Marshall S., as well as David’s girlfriend, Lisa P. Throughout the week, the anglers also fished with guide Capt. David and Marshall landed numerous permit and bonefish as well as a snook. Cindy was successful in landing her first of many bonefish with Daniel, and Lisa landed bonefish and hooked a couple of permit.
Traveling all the way from Russia were Egor C. and Stas G. Fishing with guides Willie and Dion, Egor and Stas landed four and five permit respectively. They had most of their success with shrimp patterns, but also had permit eat Merkin crabs.
Our “characters of the week,” Phil, Joel, and Dave C. spent the week fishing with guides Michael and Pops. Joel was successful in landing a permit as well as multiple bonefish, and Phil and Dave landed bonefish as well as snapper and other alternative species. Joel’s daughter, Hali, also fished for one day and managed to land her first bonefish.
We also hosted a good number of half-week anglers.
Friends John R., Pete D., Bob S., and Dick C., fished with guides Dubs and Eddie for the beginning of the week. Each angler was successful in landing bonefish, and Pete landed a large permit on Mon.
Richard “Rick” E. of Vancouver, B.C., fished with guides Pops and Michael. Rick landed a nice permit on Mon. along with a handful of bonefish over the course three days.
During the second half of the week, Greg and Will H. fished with Dubs. Both anglers were successful in effectively targeting bonefish on the flats.
Not only was this week filled with a lot of permit (21 to be exact), but also a lot of laughs and a lot of fun.
For fear of running on too long with this report, I will end by quoting our honorable guest, Phil: “Constipation of the brain and diarrhea of the mouth can sometimes be fatal.”

The Week of Feb. 11-18, 2012
Weather Conditions: Warm and sunny with intermittent cloud cover
Air Temp: Averaged around 80 degrees F, with a high around 84
Water Temp: Upper 70s
Wind: Dominated from E
Tides: Rising tide throughout the day for most of the week
Moon Phase: Last Quarter Moon on Tues., Feb. 14
Another week of warm and sunny weather as well as good tides produced ideal fishing conditions. Large schools of bonefish and were found on the flats throughout the week. Permit were also spotted cruising the flats and schooling in the Central Lagoon. Anglers had success with our “go-to” flies – Crazy Charlies (Brown, White and Pink sizes 6 and 8), Pearl Gotchas (sizes 6 and 8), and, of course, Bonefish Bitters (sizes 6 and 8). We also had some anglers land bonefish on flies hand-tied by guide Michael.
Dave P., of Concord, NH, had a great week of fishing with Michael, landing many bonefish with a number of shots at tailing permit. Dave, who had previously fished for bonefish in the Bahamas, made a point to tell us that he had never seen so many bonefish as he did on our flats! Dave landed his largest bonefish ever.
Our other Dave of the week – Dave M., of Bend, Ore. – fished with guide Pops. Dave and Pops spent the week chasing tailing bonefish with success on the northeast flats of the Atoll as well as the expansive flats at Calabash Caye.
John D. joined us from Canada and had the pleasure of fishing with guide Capt. as well as one day with Pops. His first time ever bonefishing, John was successful throughout the week. He had the most success with Pops’ Bonefish Bitters patterns (Olive and Amber, sizes 6 and 8).
Chip and Charlie G. spent the first half of their week working on their Advanced SCUBA certifications with Turneffe Flats Dive Instructor Alex and passed the test. They fished with guide Daniel for the last two days of the week. First-time saltwater anglers, both Chip and Charlie were successful in landing bonefish on Thurs. and a handful of large barracuda on Fri.
We also hosted a few anglers on half-week packages. Robert G. and John L., of the Big Apple, fished with guide Daniel for the first half of the week. This was also the first saltwater fly-fishing experience for both anglers. After getting a feel for fighting a bonefish in deeper holes, each had success stalking tailing bones on the flats. Robert and John made the best of their few days with us by also enjoying a couple of midday snorkels off of Daniel’s skiff!
Joe and Debbie C., of Rochester, Minn., spent a day fishing with guide Capt. Equipped with a pair of 8-weight rods and a handful of flies, Joe and Debbie made the most of their fishing day and landed multiple bonefish on the flats.

February 4 - 11, 2012

Moon Phase: Full Moon on Tuesday, February 7
The warm and sunny weather that followed last week’s cold fronts had bonefish and permit chasing flies both on the flats and in some deeper pools. As surface waters warmed with the sun, large schools of fish were found along the outer eastside flats of the Atoll. Anglers fared well with old standbys Crazy Charlies, Gotchas, and Pops’ Bonefish Bitters.
This week, we hosted anglers of all skill levels, and all were successful in landing bonefish as well as various other species, including barracuda, snapper and jacks.
Bill “The Kingpin” S., Bob S., Lynn M., and John L., of California joined us for a full week. They mixed it up, fishing with guides Dubs and Michael and targeting various species. John, who had previously fished with us, targeted bonefish, but also enjoyed fishing deeper water for snapper and jacks.
Bob, an avid angler, ended the week with a bang by landing numerous bonefish. He also had numerous legitimate shots at permit in the lagoon, but unfortunately, could not get them to chase a fly. His wife, Lynn, had a great week bonefishing on the flats. With keen eyesight, natural talent, and assistance from Dubs, Lynn was targeting tailing bones like a pro by mid-week.
And then, of course, was Bill – also known as “The Kingpin.” At 81, Bill did not skip a beat when it came down to fishing. Using a 6-weight and fishing deeper water, Bill was successful in landing numerous bonefish, snapper, and a large barracuda.
Hailing from the “Land Down Under,” Mike M. joined us for a half-week. Mike landed many bonefish in his few days fishing and also had a couple of shots at a school of permit in the Central Lagoon.
Dreaded “gift season” is rapidly approaching – weddings, graduations and more. Maybe this is a good time to think about a week of wading the flats in easy-to-reach, English-speaking Belize for yourself or that soon-to-be graduate or groom in your life.

The Week of Jan. 28-Feb. 4, 2012
Weather Conditions: Two cold fronts brought in some cloud cover and rain
Air Temp: Averaged in the mid-70s

Wind: Winds from the N and E
Tides: We had a rising tide throughout the day in the beginning of the week, and a high falling tide in the morning by week’s end
Moon Phase: First Quarter Moon on Mon., Jan. 30
Despite less-than-ideal weather, all anglers landed bonefish throughout the week. We also had one permit caught in the beginning of the week.
Fishing was affected by the weather. Unfortunately, we had back-to-back cold fronts move through the area that pushed fish off the flats and into deeper water. It was very unusual and definitely not characteristic during this time of the year – or any time of year, for that matter.
By Saturday (2/4) the weather broke and we were graced with sunshine and the sight of many tailing bonefish in front of the lodge.
Canadian visitors Ivo M., Bryan R., and Bill F., fished with guides Daniel and Willie. An angler on a mission, Ivo, along with Daniel, concentrated on permit, and was successful in landing one early in the week. By week’s end, Ivo decided to take advantage of the variety of sport fish species found at Turneffe and caught a couple of barracuda on Fri. While Ivo and Daniel were chasing permit, Bryan and Bill headed to one of our many hard-bottom flats in search of bonefish. They were successful all week long in landing bonefish, even in less-than-ideal conditions. Both Bryan and Bill also had a few shots at permit.
Joining us from San Diego, Calif., were Brian E., Gerry D., and Kim E. The three anglers fished with guides Dubs and Dion. Each angler landed bonefish plus a few snapper and barracuda. These three gentlemen also had a couple of shots at permit.
We also had a handful of half-week anglers – Paul and Barbara B., and Jim D., fished with guide Capt. at various times in the week. All were quite new to saltwater fly-fishing, and each caught multiple bonefish and a few other species.
It was a small group of fun-loving and interesting guests that had us all feeling like a family by the end of the week.
On Feb. 2 – Groundhog Day – Punxsutawney Phil forecast six more weeks of winter. The week of January 21-28, 2012
Weather Conditions: Warm and Sunny
Air Temp: Averaged around 80 degrees
Water Temp: Upper 70s to low 80s
Wind: Winds from the ESE prevailed
Tides: High tides in the morning for most of the week, with high tide between noon and 1 pm by week’s end
Moon Phase: New Moon on Mon., Jan. 23
Another week of warm and sunny weather provided good fishing. Morning outings seemed to fare better than the afternoons because of the tides; however, bonefish and permit were caught throughout the tidal cycle. For bonefish, anglers had success with various small Bitters patterns, as well as Gotchas.
Ed B., a fishing guide out of Homosassa, Fla., had an incredible week of fishing with our guide Dion. Along with multiple bonefish, Ed successfully chased permit for most of his stay. The veteran fisherman has spent the past 20 years attempting to catch a permit, and this week, he made up for lost time by landing four! Primarily a conventional gear fisherman, Ed also landed one of his four permit on a fly rod – an accomplishment any angler should be proud of.
Longtime TF angler, Dirk R., and his girlfriend Ali F. fished with guide Michael. And, although Ali had never picked up a flyrod before, she caught bonefish all week while fishing off of the boat and wading the flats. Ali also enjoyed a few afternoon snorkels off Michael’s skiff.
Jeff S. and Kathy O. of Madison, Wisc. chased bonefish and permit with guides Daniel and Willie. Each angler landed bonefish in the flats and had a few shots at permit. An expert trout fisherman, this was Jeff’s first saltwater experience, and we hope to see these two again in the future.
Paul H. and son-in-law Robert B. were our true Southern gentlemen of the week. They spent the week bonefishing successfully with veteran guide Pops.
Earl M. spent the week fishing for bonefish and permit with guide Dubs. Earl had much success on the flats, where he landed many 5+ pounders including one over 9.
Stable weather over the past couple of weeks had bonefish and permit feeding quite readily.
It’s another six to eight weeks until spring. If the winter winds, snow and slush have you in a fowl mood, think about a week wading the flats in easy-to-reach, English-speaking Belize. The week of Jan. 14-21, 2012
Weather Conditions: Warm and Sunny
Air Temp: Averaged around 79 degrees
Water Temp: Upper-70s to low-80s
Wind: Winds from the E prevailed
Tides: High tide in the late afternoon at the beginning of the week and a high falling tide throughout the morning by week’s end
Moon Phase: Last Quarter Moon on Mon., Jan. 16
Warm, sunny weather and good tides provided great fishing throughout the week. Consistent temperatures and lack of precipitation had fish feeding readily on the flats and in the lagoon. Multiple permit, numerous bonefish, and even a rare golden bonefish were caught.
Rich P. and Dave “Whitey” E. joined us for the beginning of the week. Rich landed a permit on a self-tied crab pattern with guide Dion, and “Whitey” landed a permit and a rare golden bonefish with longtime guide Pops.
Bill M. and Tom K. of Phoenix, Ariz. fished with guide Michael for the week. Both anglers landed numerous bonefish; actually the word “numerous” doesn’t come close. They boasted a 27-bonefish day on Wed., including many double hook-ups!
Longtime TF anglers Doug C. and Bruce Han chased bonefish, permit, and snapper with guide Willie. On Fri., Bruce landed a permit in the Central Lagoon.
Bruce and Nancy Har, of Carlisle, Penn. fished with guide Dubs. Each angler landed multiple bonefish and snapper plus a few jacks.
Good weather and ideal tides produced good fishing for all anglers. Both permit and bonefish were feeding aggressively all week long. It was great to see familiar faces, as well as some new guests, on the island!
If winter weather has you looking at the calendar and hoping for an early spring, think about a week wading the flats in easy-to-reach, English-speaking Belize.

Tides: We experienced a rising tide throughout the morning and a falling tide from midday through the evening.
Moon Phase: Full Moon on Mon., Jan. 9
This week was characterized by warm, sunny days with variable winds, which led to good bonefish and permit fishing.
We hosted a lively corporate group based out of Hailey, Ida. that fished with guides Dubs, Dion, Michael, Pops, Eddie, Capt., and Daniel. The fisherman had fun targeting bonefish and permit, with an occasional shot at a resident Turneffe tarpon. To mention a few names, Jack R. and Les H. were each able to capitalize with shots at permit while fishing with Capt. The go-to flies for Jack and Les were E.P.’s Descendant Crab in both green and tan.
We were also fortunate enough to help celebrate Wade U.’s 40th birthday. Wade had a great week of fishing with Michael and landed multiple bones, barracuda and jacks.
Turneffe Flats would like to thank the guys from POWER Engineers as well as Wade and his wife Marlys for their lively and enjoyable company throughout the week. Thanks for sharing some laughs and good times.

The week of Dec. 31-Jan. 7, 2012
Weather Conditions: Some rain early in the week with sunshine from mid-week to week’s end.
Air Temp: Averaged in the mid- to upper-70s
Water Temp: Upper 70s to low 80s
Wind: NNW in the beginning of the week, and mostly ENE by week’s end
Tides: We experienced a rising tide through late afternoon in the beginning of the week and a falling tide throughout the day by week’s end.
Moon Phase: First Quarter Moon on New Year’s Day
There was no fishing report for last week (Dec. 24-31). All guests were non-anglers who enjoyed snorkeling, diving, and bird watching around the atoll. We truly enjoyed their company for the holidays.
Half of our anglers this week were returning guests, and it was great to see everybody again.
Hal C., of Nova Scotia, Canada, has been fishing at Turneffe for many years, and was down our way for a mid-winter break from the weather and some rod-bending recreation.
Charlie G. and Donna G., also previous guests, fished with guide Michael. They each landed numerous bonefish, and Donna landed a beautiful 11-pounder on a #6 orange Crazy Charlie. Take a look at Donna’s fish on our website www.tflats.com and Facebook page.
Newlyweds Stirling and Kirtlye T., of Kalispell, Mont., joined us for half of the week. Stirling wasted no time and you could usually find him on the flat in front of his cabana before breakfast and after returning from his day with guide Daniel. Stirling landed many bonefish, as well as jacks. We wish both Stirling and Kirtlye the best (and many happy returns to Turneffe Flats) in their future.
Ken and Carter E. also joined us for a half-week and fished with guide Dubs. Ken came with what he referred to as an “arsenal” of hand-tied flies. It must be nice to be retired, Ken! Both Ken and Carter landed multiple bonefish and jacks with these flies.
Both old and new guests really helped to ring in the New Year with a great time!
